Since our last premiership, Carlton has averaged an 11th-place finish, winning just 41% of games. With only 31% of seasons producing more wins than losses, five wooden spoons, and 19 top-10 draft picks, the rebuilds have come and gone with little success. For a once-mighty club, these numbers are a painful reality.

What is says is the club is still rotten at the core

Happy Birthday, Mum.

Mum was as diehard Carlton as they come. She didn’t just barrack for the Blues—she lived and breathed them. From the mid-50s through to my birth in 1980, she was at Princes Park whenever she could be. Back when she was growing up in country Victoria, that meant packing the family into the car for hours just to get to a game. No complaints—just the price of passion.

Then I came along, and she put her live footy days on hold, thinking a toddler didn’t belong sitting boundary-side. But that didn’t mean she stopped watching. Oh no. I grew up playing street footy with the neighbor boys, and we always knew when Carlton had kicked a goal—Mum’s cheers could shake the house.

I remember asking her which team I should support. Dad had played for North, and his cousin was Tommy Allison (Brett’s dad), so I had a foot in both camps. But Mum had the trump card: "If you barrack for Carlton, I’ll take you to the footy. You can support your cousin (Dorotich) too, but I don't know if Dad will take you—he’s too old and sick." (He was in his sixties when I was born.) Decision made. Navy Blue for life.

We started going to games together in ‘89, rain, hail, or shine. We never missed one. Even if it meant catching the flu, it was worth it. And nothing, nothing topped 1995.

Pre-internet, pre-Ticketek meltdowns, we camped outside Highpoint the night after Paul Kelly won the Brownlow, just to get grand final tickets. We went to the open training, the parade—soaked up every second. On the way to the ‘G, we pulled up just as Brad Pearce was walking in with Richo. Mum tooted the horn and wished him luck. He thanked us and Richo, his housemate and guest, grinned and said, “It’s in the bag.” He was right.

That night, we were back at Princes Park, sinking my first celebratory beers with the faithful. Next day, family day with the players. Carlton had won its 16th flag, and all felt right with the world.

Mum’s health declined not long after. Dad passed in ‘98, and I know he would’ve loved to see us play his North in the ‘99 GF. By then, I think he enjoyed our love of Carlton more than he cared about his own team, though North’s ‘96 flag meant the world to him.

As she got sicker, Mum held onto one last footy fact: Carlton had won more premierships than anyone and had never finished last. That was her comfort.

She passed away a week before my birthday in 2002. That year, Carlton won its first wooden spoon. We've won five in total since and not a single flag.

In the 23 years since she left, the club has seen more chaos than in its entire history before that. But through it all, I’ve never stopped loving the Blues. I love this club. I love the current and past players I’ve met (many of you are on my friends list). I love the fellow supporters who have ridden every high and low with me (again, many of you are friends). I love the history, even if the last two decades have been rough.

Thursday would have been Mum’s 84th birthday. Carlton lost.

But she’d still be proud. She raised me well.

And no matter what, I’ll always be Carlton for life. Thanks, Mum. 💙

I heard that behind the scenes, as long as Motlop gets a game it means Moir doesn’t.
They feel they play the same role and position.
Disappointing if true!
Given Moir is 8cm taller than Motlop and plays as a lead up marking half forward and Motlop is a small crumbing forward who pinch hits in the middle I can't see that as being true at all.

Moir is far more competing with Kemp or possibly Williams

Wait what, we have one of those in the 2's??? We don't have one of those in the 1's...

Moir needs to play, we just need natural forwards not second rate mids that fill a gap...

And don't give me, what has he done in the 2's crap either...

I saw Moir live against the Saints last year and there was just something about him that screamed elite talent, even the sound of him marking the ball was different - the only thing that I see stopping him from playing is his ability to run out the game - but I would have him in ahead of Fogarty for sure.

He will fit in with the rest of the team perfectly then!

As KB once said, I don't need to chase if I have the ball...

All valid points. But just passing on what I have heard.

I want Moir to play too. I Reckon he has class!

Just hope he plays a true full forward role tonight. Too often he seems lost between the centre square and our goals - sort of in no mans land. He's one player I find is being coached very strangely.

What about JSOS. Trained all preseason as a defender. That lasted 3/4 of a game and now he’s a forward again. Go figure.

Funnily enough “Shit” is not a position on the field, and players like Haynes and Young still get games. So I am not sure why Motlop playing should affect Moir getting a game.

Completely different players playing completely different roles. Ones a medium half forward and the others a small forward.

And both games that Moir played late last year so did Motlop. You might need to check your source.

Again. Good points. Just passing on what I have heard. You might be right.
I guess we’ll see how it plays out.

Doesn’t make sense to me my Moir isn’t getting selected especially last week with Evans in the side over him and again last night with Harry being a late out.

Nick Austin said during the trade period that we want to get more games into Moir and that was one of the reasons we didn’t bring back Owies. It’s bizarre.

Evans I think was taking Fantasia’s spot. Think if Moir played, it would be at the expense of Kemp

I personally think that it's because he was given first crack against the Saints in a practice match but couldn't find a way to work himself into the game or to impose himself on the game.

Don't get me wrong, he has some of the traits to make it as a player already but there are a few like tank and finding ways to stay involved in games that he needs to work on. Hoping that he bangs the door down in tonight's game and makes it impossible not to select him next week.

Watch the VFL game tonight and there's every chance you'll find out. Evans for all his criticism still topped our team for high speed metres covered, sprints etc.

Not saying I want Evans in the team but his fitness level is on an entirely different level to Moir, who has the natural talent but needs to build his body.

Then wby did we spend our first selection in 2023 on a back up player
We didn't. We used pick 29 on a player who was rated highly pre his draft year but was a slider due to a so so year. We did it on the understanding that it might take a while for him to get the traits required, but if it all fell into place he would be a steal.
