The Mcguane article which says we are doing a lot right but can't convert i50s to scores reinforces the view that our problem is list management because we don't have the outside players and smalls to deliver and score
We bloody well do.
We've seen it.
We have Walshy and we can use Cerra as a forward mid. Cotters can run and so can Ollie. And Zak/zac...

More to the point, we have prioritised endurance over skill (and pace). Mind you, I'd be interested in going back through junior phantom drafts and seeing how many of our players were considered good kicks before we got hold of them. It is possible that our system has caused disposal skills to drop.

Walsh cant run with pace anymore and cottrel and zak are injured.
2 transition players only ollie and cerra are not enough
ARe you saying his back issues have ruined Walshy's run?
DO we know this for sure?

Endurance you say?

Just said this in another thread.

I'll save you the trouble! - big tank, immense work ethic, runs all day, can let down with disposal.

Side was built on years of being physically bullied (late). Then the HTB rule changed and "Bulls" are no longer needed.

I think we've been so slow for so long that we've forgotten what 'speed' looks like.

By my definition, Walsh was never what i consider fast. One paced is the best description. It doesnt mean slow... he moves at a very consistent speed, if he hits the ball on the move he'll seperate but get run down if he holds it.

If you watch Walsh in 2021 he was about as close to 'fast' as you could get without being Cyril Rioli type explosive fast. Isn't moving anything like this at the moment.

I also notice that we played with a bit more freedom, and had more pace around the ball, which allowed us to have more time and not have to graft as much. I kind of feel like it's not necessarily all about Walsh's back, but about how taxing our game is because every single contest is a graft, and we just don't have the energy to go when we need to.

Seeing the likes of Cuningham and Honey reminds me that we never looked to replace the speed of players like this, even though Honey was a bust ultimately.

Although I don't think trading out Kennedy and Owies was a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, what we did do was lose two player who invariably made good decisions and found players in space.

Every move we have made seems to have hurt us more. We tweaked the game plan to become more defensive, but the end result is we have no attacking ability, and it doesn't take much for the defence to fall apart.

Can Wright get the coaches to make enough changes to allow the likes of Walsh to play with freedom again, and convince him to stay?

We played a far more modern brand under Teague. Used width and uncontested marking to worth our way through the ground. Just didn't have a clue about defending at the time.

Now we're just a battering ram of ugliness trying to bully our way through the middle with no fluency or speed on the ball so we can try and protect our defensive 50 from transition rebound which has been our Achilles heel for a few years.

Garry Lyon said it all for me. You can coach your socks off but nothing works when you cant kick the footy. Butchers everywhere.

Its not even the risky kicks, its the simpke passes, switches, kicks to space. They go over, under, backwards... they go in every direction but the one that is to advantage.

Quick switch? Yep ill kick it 40m in the air and 25m behind him.

Pass to harry on lead? Yep i'll chip it loopy and high so defenders can close.

I'll forgive a risky kick. The unforced, unpressured skill errors break me.

Cripps, Ollie, Walsh handball chain? Loopy, loopy, loopy.

He's about 10kg heavier in the hips now. But even then he doesnt qualify for me. Just average speed. Looks good if he hits it at pace, similar to Cotts

Obviously we all have our own opinion on speed, 21 Walshy is my bare minimum, i dont want anyone slower in my midfield.

From that footage, we could do a hell of a lot worse than playing him as that high half forward/forward pocket role we have Elijah or one of Motts/Durdin in.

The other thing he's got in that footage which he doesn't now is balance. Sam Walsh the draftee was one of the most superbly balanced footballers I have ever seen; he could keep his feet in a hurricane. His balance was as close to Abblett Jnr I've ever seen; Abblett was a ghost and a juggernaut, because he was simply not there when you went to tackle him and if you somehow got hands to him you couldn't drag him to ground or twist his body, such was the strength through the hips and the just bonkers balance, even on one foot.

Sam now gets knocked, gets tackled, takes a step and has to recover.

You've got to wonder about the effect of playing through repeat injuries has on an AFL footballer; but then, you don't really need to wonder, do you?

Great look at the bad decisions we make in game that make everything more difficult. Time and again we ignore the easy give and go long.

Johnno Brown's comments on the forwards needing to work together echo what I've been banging on about for ages. Everyone seems to do their own thing in the F50.

I also liked Figjam's comment about the curse of talent.

Who is Robert Priestly and how did he become Prez?
Just watched a longish mid season interview and nothing- absolutely nothing was said with a whole lot of words.
Nothing to inspire confidence.
Nothing that speaks to hope of real change.
Pats on the back for the 'off field' that's going 'really well' but an 'ongoing task to get onfield right' . Mmm. Whodathought.

What exactly do President's do? Are they paid? What is their purpose.
