Hell yeah!!!!! It's brilliant. I sent a copy to my man in America, he really loved it too. :D Very Aussie. I also love 'Spotswood' but they didn't have that on Amazon.com, grrrrrrrr. (Had to choose American-made tapes so he could play them lol)

Fantastic film. I'm too homesick for Melbourne to watch it here! Went to see 'The Dish' a couple of months ago and loved it! It got great reviews here, but only was shown in two 'artsy' movie theatres in the Chicagoland area. I think Americans needed it sub-titled! :D

My name is Dale Kerrigan

and this is my story.

Classic film...

150 for jousting sticks... tell him he's dreamin..

Dish isn't quite as charming but still pretty funny..."imagine stuffin that up!"

Chicago, my seppo missus reckons aussie movies are actually found in the section of video stores which we would call Art-House. Is this true?

Yep, Castle is very bloody funny! "I like this plane", and the photocopier scenes with Tiriel Mora are grouse!

For aussie comedy, I also recommend Hercules Returns!

Now, question : Seeing as aussies do pretty well with comedy movies, why was Mother And Son the only ever decent aussie sitcom?

The Dish got pretty wide release here a few months back, and reviews were pretty good.

Best film...well, Bad Boy Bubby from a few years back was pretty bizarre but bloody funny. Hotel de Love and Love Serenade were pretty cool too from a couple of years back. Malcolm was good, Strictly Ballroom and Priscilla were all unmistakeably aussie.

Always check out the aussie film festival here, which is pretty good.

You buy dual format VCRs, which play both NTSC and PAL videos, they arent much more than a single format VCR. Means my seppo missus can get lots of boring tapes from her mum and ( try to) force me to watch them, which is fantastic!

Aussie sitcoms.......Hey Dad! lol lol lol

I'll think bout that one

I give all aussie and kiwi movies that I have seen a score out of ten from my opinion, just looked up the above and got the following :
Bad Boy Bubby 8.0
Hotel de Love 7.5
Love Serenade 8.5 (easing his loneliness)
Malcolm 7.5
Strictly Ballroom 7.0
Priscilla QotD 8.0

London Dave, if you liked Love Serenade (filmed at Robinvale an Euston on the Murray!), I recommend 'Road To Nhill'.

If anyone's trying to remember an old aussie movie, or has some similar conundrum ... "You Talk To Me" (per MM2). :D

Hey Dad, lol, better than many others, but still pretty shoddy. To make Hey Dad seem like a GOOD sitcom, one needs to compare to, say, Brass Monkeys!

Oh and I'm not totally biased, either, here's some to avoid :

Coda (with Penny Cook) 1.0
Bloodlust ("Woowee, I LOVE my job") 2.0
The Place At The Coast (billed as the female Year My Voice Broke LOL) 3.0
Exchange Lifeguards, Dust Off The Wings each 3.0
Double Deal, Murrabinna each 3.5

.. and a heap got 4.0 ... including Maslin Beach.

Thanks MF, Road to Nhill was on at the Oz Film Fest couple of years ago. It was pretty good too.

I saw something this year about some bird who worked in a book store in rainy Melbourne trying to get laid. Know the name?? That was pants!, and I'll steer clear of those on your turkey list.

Mobbenfuhrer :

Can't tell you about Aussie films at video shops here since I don't belong to one. Will have a gander next week at one nearby. I had to take two trains to the cinema that was showing 'The Dish'. It was playing in Evanston, the home of Northwestern University - a rather wealthy northern suburb. Atmosphere is like South Yarra/Toorak. The other cinema it was showing was in the trendy section of Chicago itself, similar to the Carlton restaurant area.

I loved teaching 'Proof' and 'Strictly Ballroom' as 'film as text' to my Year 11 classes in Melbourne. I was on an AOL message board after Russell Crowe won the Oscar, extolling the the great Aussie films that have been made, yet never recognised in the states. I was really surprised that some Americans knew all about 'Proof', 'Romper Stomper', 'Malcolm', and a few others. It's too bad that 'The Dish' wasn't released in more suburban cinemas here. I think many Americans would have liked it. Too bad that new damn 'Crocodile Dundee' crap was released about the same time. Paul Hogan put the American general public's idea of Aussie films back at least ten years with that croc of manure!

I LOVE THE CASTLE!

That movie is awesome. I didn't get to see it last night as i was out but i've seen it about 4 times already.

"Dale ... tell em what you did today"

"Awww ok ... i dug a hole"

:D

Favorite line from The Castle was when The Dad asks Bud Tingwalls character "Whats he up for?" When he says that hes at court for his sons first court appearence.

As for Australian sit-coms I always think that 'Frontline' and 'The Games' are two that are often overlooked.

Favourite Australian film is 'Spotswood'. Alwyn Kurts was a great actor.

Yeah, Frontline was very good, I'd forgotten that one.

I don't recall 'The Games' ...

Here's some worrying memories :
Bligh.
Newlyweds.
All Together Now.
Over The Hill.

Oops, almost forgot to mention, yep I agree Spotswood is a great flick, but my favourite movie is still 'The Year My Voice Broke'.

I also taught 'The Year My Voice Broke' to a Year 10 class in '96 and '97. The film was on the International Film Channel (IFC) on cable here not so long ago. I also saw 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' and 'Hotel Sorrento' on IFC in the past few months. 'Picnic' was the first Aussie film I ever saw. I think we took our Form 4 classes to see it at the Airport West Cinema when I was teaching at Avondale High School way back in 1976 or so! My God, that's 25 years ago! Will someone get me my cane!;) :D

Oh, and dare I admit I was a 'Prisoner' addict back in the 80s! Believe it or not, I first saw it while visiting my old university in central Illinois during our Christmas holidays in '79. I was in my motel room and was channel surfing when I heard Aussie accents. I began watching it when I returned to Melbourne after the holidays. A couple of episodes in the early 80s were filmed at the school I was teaching at in Box Hill. Bea, Lizzie, Doreen, Frankie, Vinegar ****, the Freak - now THAT was television!:p

Priscilla QOTD, Stricly Ballroom and The Castle have got to be three of my all time favourite movies, i love them all.

I must say The Comedy Company/Fast Forward/Full Frontal was always one of my favourite TV shows

One of the more recent aussie flicks that I would recommend is 'Soft Fruit'.

I've always been a Johnny Hargreaves Fan, therefore Long Weekend, Sky Pirates, Boundaries Of The Heart ... all amongst my favourites.

Indiana Jones Trilogy = Sky Pirates cover band :D
The Birds = Long Weekend cover band. :D :D
