The Charlesworth Experiment

While Sheeds and others have at various times borrowed training techniques from other sports such as rugby league and gridiron I'm not aware of any coaches from other codes. What do people think of the idea (and the particular person)?

I think he will be quite good for the Dockers as long as Drummy lets him have an influence, i reckon by about round eight if Freo are struggling Drummy will be feeling very nervous, Charlesworth sounds like a guy that is used to being top dog i dont think he will be satisfied for long being second banana, David Parkin at Hawthorn on the other hand will be of great benefit to Scwabbie as he has no longer any need to be a senior coach already achieving it all with nothing to prove but plenty to give

IMO it will be an unmitigated failure. Hockey and Footy have no commonality and there are better sports psychologists around than Ric. How about the Dockers appointing the best synchronous swimming coach in the world to their team too? Oops on second thoughts by watching their play maybe they already have

As a "High Performance COnsultant" I do not believe Charlesworth has any interest in taking the top job from what I have read anyway (Inside Footy).

As fo this type of person, I think he definitely has a role to play and it may benefit the Dockers.

In the above mentioned article he stresses are number of very interesting points which may already be common practice at AFL clubs, the most significant being his fruatration at players coming in as a group after runs etc.

These observations will be of benefit - How they are implemented will be the key to the success.

As for strategy, I doubt there is a lot he can do in the short term.

My two bobs woth anyway

I must say I wouldn't be happy if went to the Bombers, I too feel that Hockey & Footy are too different. I guess we will have to wait & see, I might have to eat my words.

I play hockey and i love footy. Yeah they are two different things but training wise, alot can be gained. Charlesworth is renowned as a person that pushes his players hard and never quits. I think the Dockers need to take this approach.
Charlesworth is my opinion will help improve not how they play the game but their approach to it. They will improve mentally and have a boost of endurance.
Congrats to the Dockers for employing Charlseworth as in my eyes, it was a good move.

Will be interesting to watch this develop over time, Charlesworth is very used to success, so it may also be a learning curve for him too?

Probably worth a try

I certainly think it is interesting but I really don't think it will work. How much does he know about footy? Does he get on with Drum? To me he seems a bit arrogant. He thinks he can do anything. He should stick to hockey, something he knows about.

It smacks of a club trying to be innovative to succeed. Unfortunately, I think it will turn out to be a monumentally stupid appointment, and may just bring the Dockers undone early in the season.
