He has some players. Just the wrong players.
Constantly hanging it all on the players will do that. Richo does need to come out on occasion and admit his failures at times. Blind Freddy could see that having no forward to kick it to during the Cats game was a complete disaster as just one example.

Maybe he needs to admit that some (many?) aspects of his game plan need reworking, that he hasn’t done well enough, instead of just “oh the players didn’t pressure enough, were reactive” etc.

Take some of the responsibility too. Buck stops with the coach at the end of the day.

All this aside, we are going to have to suck it up for now because it could not have been made clearer that the club is going to support him for the moment. So we’d all better pray, bloody hard, that he comes good, because for better or worse we’ve got him for the foreseeable future.

surely we would have tried Dmac on him, given his pace and defencive attributes.

so i'm guessing we just rolled with newnes all game?
All of our small forwards had time on JJ but none in a defensive role until the last quarter when Coff went onto him for a while. It may have just been the kid's footy intellect but he seemed to pay more defensive attention to JJ.

Not sure Spotty Dopey noticed JJ's 41 touches and 4500km gained though o_O

If nothing else, it would have been a great learning experience for Coff in the last quarter.

What you say is right mate but at the same time I understand completely why a lot members are so ####### frustrated with the club.
IMO the only reason Richo will be there next year is if he goes Finnis and Summers know they should goes as well because of their stuff up. Been a Saints man for 45 years and most of that time have been a member year after year like all my family, reserved seat - Social club member x 4 $2200 not loyal my ass, Club can't keep expecting members to keep coughing up good coin year after year unconditionally without holding up their end
I am frustrated too. I am as pissed off and fed up with the current situation just as much as the next person. However I want to still have the ability to support the Saints. If nobody renewed their membership and sponsorship fell away because of it we would be even further up the shitter. I want the club to stand on it's own two feet, and the little part that I can play in that is buying a membership. Financially supporting the club. Helping them, albeit in a small way, to get out of the mess they are in. To stop drowning in debt. To become a powerful Victorian club.

Not renewing your membership is your prerogative but it does the exact opposite of what you're trying to achieve. If you think our club is stuffed now imagine if thousands don't bother supporting them financially anymore. It will be even worse.

You don't have to fork out $2000 a year on memberships. You could get four 3 game memberships at about $100 each. Save yourself almost $2000 but still help the club.

I was a social club member back in 09/10 for the reserved seating and GF tickets. Since we've fallen away I can't justify spending the same amount of money but I still put in what I can because I love the football club.

If you truly support the club then you do so irrespective of performance. Support when we're up and support when we're down. Imagine if players like Barker and Breen didn't give a stuff about us in the 80's. We wouldn't have a club today. I dread a day where we are struggling that badly again.

I love this football club mate. I am hurting just as much as you and others. But I can't see a day where I completely give up on them. They are a big part of my life. I've forked out thousands over the years on them. Last year I gave them 3 grand for the Moorabbin redevelopment out of my own pocket. Just so I could get my late old mans name up on the wall at Moorabbin. It means a lot to me and I'm sure to a lot of us who are on here.

It can turn quickly. We've seen it with our own side in the past. Despite the constant negativity on here lately I am really looking forward to who we bring in over the next couple of months and seeing an improvement over summer and into 2019. I don't buy into the notion Richo has lost the playing group or other crap about how bad we are. Players love him, and blame themselves for this year just as much as anything else. Off field we are flying.

I remember reading some stat about Melbourne playing 4 top 8 sides to this point and us playing 11...could be wrong on the number but the fact is that we have been given a tough draw and we have one of the least experienced sides in the competition...now that doesn't mean I or anyone else expected the kind of dross we've dished up this year but it definitely doesn't help.

Anyway I reckon I've blabbered on for long enough. I hope that those who are frustrated now will still renew. We need them.

This Friday night will be very very interesting. Full house you would think on primetime viewing and we get spanked by 60 odd which will happen if Essendon are serious about finals and % then it will be very very interesting times down at Moorabbin.

Who actually signed off on the extension - the whole board?

I mean we can't blame richo at all for wanting to extend his contract, but whoever signed off to extend the worst performing coach to reach 100 games needs to walk the plank themselves, all of them.

last year the pies and suns were sniffing around at richo when we were doing 'well' as in in the eight before we freefalled

Lets hope the assistants we bring in can steady the ship next year. If not, he goes. I just want us to win and be a strong club. I don't care who is in charge and I won't hurt the club because of it - hope people can feel the same way come the start of next year.

Mate, this is the passion that makes clubs.

Not saying others are less passionate because if they weren't, this place would be tumbleweeds.

Well said and said with class. Old mate Trevor would be looking down with a smile on his face.

You're a better person than me.

I think we do have leaders, or potential leaders in the team but who aren't being allowed to "lead" or take the initiative. Steele I have mentioned. Seems like he is a hard case with high expectations of himself. Bruce shows fight despite his limitations. Membrey looks like he could direct a forward line. Hickey has a lot of passion, ignore what he can't do well (he simply doesn't have the body size) but he could be very creative, he gets to where the ball is a lot.

I would challenge both Billings and Gresh to step up, take responsibility and ownership and bring their teammates into the game. No more Mr Showtime stuff.

Maybe Ross could take more of a hands on role with Stuv as setting the standard.

Roberton is a huge loss, the most intelligent and creative of our backs. Can only see Carlisle and Webster as back half leaders. But they have to want that responsibility.

Marshall, Battle, Clark and Coffield all look as if they can develop into those types of characters. Long too in another season.

Newnes, Savage, Armo, Dunstan, Geary etc won't, or shouldn't, be there long enough to hold those roles in a formal sense. None have been able to show enough consistent leadership over any length of time. Too many times they have barely justified selection.

Again, I go back to coaching, development, mentoring, however you want to define it. Off field and on field leadership is lacking in the club. The big stuff is in the wrong hands.

We've got a lot of good players who are not being coached and developed properly. They are not stupid, they know exactly what is happening and what is not. They have contacts and networks. Why would they stay if the status quo doesn't change?

We have a huge amount of quiet shy guys. Steele is another super quiet nice guy. Freeman was the loudest guy on the field the other night, begging for the ball to be kicked to him. We were near the boundary and could hear them all.

It saddens me that rusted on supporters like yourself and the rest of us senior citizens have to put up with this year.

You started in 73 and so did I.

I guess it will make the 2nd one extra special when it does happen.

On a happier note...

Don't give up on us, baby
Don't make the wrong seem right
The future isn't just one night
It's written in the moonlight
Painted on the stars
We can't change ours
Don't give up on us, baby
We're still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through
I really lost my head last night
You've got a right to start believin'
There's still a little love left, even so
Don't give up on us, baby
Lord knows we've come this far
Can't we stay the way we are?
The angel and the dreamer
Who sometimes plays a fool
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through
It's written…

Maybe I have lost the plot and everyone else is right.

I don't blame anyone for their comments lately, however we need to stick fat like we have done for 150 years. If I wanted to support a team that wins all the time I'd just follow Hawthorn or Sydney and if I wanted to see premierships I would've just followed Essendon or Carlton.

Being a St.Kilda supporter is more about the journey than the destination IMO. It's a rollercoaster ride of emotion following this club. We've never had the best teams but we've always had characters and we've always been entertaining. 1 premiership in 150 years suggest plenty of us don't follow the club because they win, either. I think one more premiership would be enough for a lot of us to be satisfied. Lets support them until they get there.

NRL club Penrith Panthers who currently sit 5th on the ladder with 3 minor rounds games remaining today sacked their coach because he wasnt Coaching to the Standard the CEO had expected.
Yep. And we extend the contract of a poor performing senior coach until the end of 2020 and the idiots who signed off on the extension can’t or won’t admit they were wrong.

The result is the deterioration of the club’s onfield performance and the morale of supporters who love the club. Yet he survives. Free to pursue his coaching tenure when blind Freddie can see he is the worst coach in the competition.

The Penrith and St Kilda boards. Poles apart.

Ok how about this in the NRL, Penrith Panthers currently in 5th spot 4 weeks out from the finals sack their coach Anthony Griffin, why? ..... “It's understood Penrith have made the decision to part ways with Griffin because of a belief he would have been unable to take the club to the level required to win a premiership.”

Now that took balls, over to you St Kilda, do you have the balls?

Edit: looks like I’m a bit late in posting this, bloody typical
