I have to say that the big run-ons against us had my alarm bells ringing re Richo…..the first being round 1 last season....the game against the Dee's.

Up until then I had a pretty open mind regarding him.

10 straight goals from memory and nothing done to try and stem it.

A few games later against the Cats.......8 goals in the last 1/4.

And this season....teams usually get away to a big start against us...….us fighting back later in the game and expecting to win is just unrealistic...…...you normally use all yr gas tics and lose......the Suns game being one out of the sky.

I always use the 30 point marker …….statistically......when a team is 30 or more points up...I think the stat is they will win 80% of the time.

We nearly got to that in the 2nd 1/4.

As you said Narkle…...a 72 point turn around by the Dogs....that's friggin disgraceful.
It used to be a reluctance to change anything at centre bounce that seemed to cause the issue.

I honestly think its our lack of continuity this season that is making us hard to coach. He's trying people all over the shop - seemingly without thought of the impact to the overall 22.

Each week I could imagine the guys are just covering off the basics in their new position/combination that when something needs to change they don't have anything to go to.

funny you mention that ... i was sitting in level two next to some kids that the club were hosting as part of their footy accademy stuff .. they had to observe the game and make notes of the game as part of their learning ... one of the kids noticed that freeman was calling for the ball a lot but his mate next to him remarked that yeah he was but he was in the wrong spot to get the ball that he was an option to kick to but by far not the best option, the Saints guy lookinf after these kids remarked that he was right as a player you need to look further than the next kick and where the easy kick was is often the kick that on the way back hurt you more...

Yeah Freeman was calling for it even when he was covered, he looked desperate to get lots of the ball but is a bit lost with where to stand. As I said in another post, Seb actually came over and gave him tips on where he should stand. It was the most leaderish thing any one did that night. We are a very quiet club though.

That's why footy is tricky compared to other sports, you almost have to think 2 plays ahead every time. Freezer was half a kick too close or didn't have space to work in. He's a very inexperienced player despite his age. He's played a handful of games at any level, probably closest to an Irish recruit.

I think if Freeman was playing in a team like Hawthorn, Richmond or Swans who move the ball by hand quickly with precision, he would have received a lot more of the ball when he got clear- those teams don't think twice about ball movement- if a teammate calls, he gets the ball.

He needs to stop waiting flat footed for the pass. One thing about footy is you need to keep moving constantly or no one will give it to you. My son noted that he looked completely stuffed by half time too, he looked like he had run himself ragged.

Watto, tell him about the eighties, if you can bear to.

I've read some recollections posted by some of the Saints stalwarts, and they were X-rated stuff; totally horrendous. If the club can get through those times, it can get through anything.
MUFKilda……...I don't want to scare him or give him nightmares...Lol.

I won't bore posters with a "those were the days post".....but......here goes...lol.

As many on here will testify.....those were very very tough years to support the Saints.

I mean.....4 wooden spoons in a row....4 in 6 seasons.....it was hard to roll up every week to watch them usually get belted.

It was basically what Carlton are doing at the moment.

We had a large group that would go every week in the late 70's and early 80's.

By the mid 80's I was basically the last man standing.

I'll never forget one of my mates saying...."he hadn't seen us win a game for 2 years"....he'd missed the occasional win we had.

But there was one bright light amongst this carnage......a chap by the name A.Lockett started playing.....he was probably the main reason I kept going...was a delight watching him kick goals when we were always losing......with him...the rest is history.

One thing that always happened.....thru the dark days...once supporters(who were severely starved of success for so long) got a sniff of success....the crowds would always rise big time.

We do a have a huge latent supporter base.

And MUFKilda….your right re getting thru the tough times.

Given the result of the game, maybe Freeman was in a better position to receive the ball & the academy coach guy knows sweet **** all...

Sounds like you’ve seen an insight into our coaching and ‘development’ - this insight does not surprise me - saints footy wise coach immediately concludes saint player with ball will miss target OR freeman will mishandle ball when it is delivered - makes sure academy kid realises his mistake of assuming saints will make the play work - fantastic lesson - what a future we have

It's not unusual. There would not be a club on this planet where a player has not had a gripe about preferential treatment by a coach towards other players
If it's not that issue, then it's the amount of game time they are getting, or that they should be playing midfield instead of someone else, or how did that campaigner get best on ground votes? That's how clubland is, even in the most successful club
That’s true, and to be fair the players who have griped to me about this are typically complaining about players who play in a similar position.

the plan was there but not the delivery like usual
Two things on this:
1. Players run to space to draw defenders and yell loudly to draw an opponent or keep the opponent close; regardless
2. I was at the game and Freeman ran to good positions and was consistently torched by teammates who either didn't want to kick it to him or didn't have the skills necessary to kick it to him.

There literally isn't anyone decent enough to replace the freckled campaigner atm so we're stuck with him.

No more untried senior coaches please.
So what about Brett Ratten? Leaving Hawthorn at end of season to seek a new opportunity, only coached at 50.4% at Carlton but six years under Clarkson you would think would improve that.
In comparrison Richo’s coaching record is 37.1%

Apologies for interrupting. A poster on our board has posted this:

"Paul Roo’s has a massive offer from the Saints.

Mitchell and Ratten included

All heading to Saints.

Similar deal to Melbourne transition."

I was wondering if people at the Saints end have heard anything?
Was sort of hoping Mitchel would come to us as an assistant.

If I've learnt anything from supporting this club it's expect the unexpected.

I was beside myself at the end of 2000 winning just two games for the year, only to be jumping for joy at signing Malcolm Blight as head coach and drafting N Riewoldt a month later. 9 months later I was in tears again.

And so on and so forth.

Don't toy with us now...Us Sainters have had more than enough false hope sold to us...and this quite literally seems way above our overlords abilities of understanding. We are more likely to get Mark Neeld Guy McKenna and Barry Hall.

Or Freeman was calling for the ball when he was in bad positions and the professionals who are paid to help develop the academy kids know what they are talking about.

Lighten up mate, I was having a joke

But in all seriousness though, I don’t see any difference in a chip to an out of position player (Freeman) compared to a long bomb to the hotspot where we are outnumbered 2 to 5.... Both are shit, yet we do one of those options 80% of the time we go inside 50, it’s been in our game plan for 4 years & looking at our results, I’d say it doesn’t work....

It doesn't make sense to me, Paul Roos has stated while criticising Boltons situation at Carlton that he wouldn't coach anywhere unless he could assemble his own team... so why would Ratten and Mitchell be packaged up at this point in time?
Fake news for me... probably straight from Trumps Twiiter feed.
