I actually cant see Clarko walking out on the hawks with a year to go on his contract.

We should be looking at others that have had a reasonable apprentices with successful teams ala Bassett/Ratten etc.
Maybe if we play on his ego. Yeah I mean he has got a pretty good legacy right now... But any old joe shmoe can get a premiership at the hawks. If he could manage to get this rag tag bunch of strugglers a grand final win, he would truly be the greatest coach of all time.

Throwing large amounts of money at someone to convince them to come to the club. If we are throwing stupid amounts of money on the hope of convincing someone then I see that as the money making the decision not the list.
Last time I checked Clarko has a contract until the end of 2019.
The issue is whether a coach that comes will do his job to his highest capacity and the highest professional standards on the back of a big paycheque.
To suggest a coach that comes on big money does not have the right motivation is overly simplified.
The Blight experience which was a quantifiably different situation, is no gauge here.
The club, if they decide they want a proven coach, is going to be paying big money regardless - you pay for quality, it is a fact of life.

I don't see how you can compare Clarko to Blight, Clarko is one of the hardest working, most competitive coaches around, he lives and breathes coaching.

If we were lucky enough to get him he's not going to be spending most of his time at the golf course like Blight did, he'd give it 100% commitment.

I'd be very surprised if he left Hawthorn anytime soon though and if he did leave I doubt it would be to go to St Kilda.

I doubt it, most are overpaid just so we can make up the required cap. Blokes like Newnes would be getting as much as Joel Selwood lmao, why leave?
Pfft. Selwood cant kick 4.

Also thst would be utter bullshit anyway

Had been calls for a cleanout and fresh ideas at the end of last year but it didn't occur.
I have to say that was a little disappointing.

I remember a poster late last season saying that he'd spoken to Peter Summers...I think at a Sandy game.

Summers flagged at least 2 changes will be made to the assistants.

That got me a little excited hearing that.

Turned out that the 2 were Playfair in(great) and Hammill out.

Given all the conjecture late last season as to what our problem was...coach or assistants.......that was a tad disappointing.

Of course the other option was that we had an ordinary list.....quite a few Saints people I know said it was this.

And pray tell how has that worked for Freo in the long term?
Yep made a Granny and then irrelevant since.

What the hell is with this clubs supporters and the Messiah complex?
Do we all forget Blight? We threw everything at him. Would have been better throwing that money in the bin. And yet there are people wanting to do the same with Clarko. Jeepers.

As some have said, at a minimum the assistants bar Playfair need to go at years end. Some have been there just way too long. Had been calls for a cleanout and fresh ideas at the end of last year but it didn't occur.
Club has 2 options.
1.Clear the entire Coaching department and start from scratch.
2. Clear the assistants and give Richo new fresh ideas. This is heavily reliant on how the team is perceived to be travelling by years end.

What I don't want to see is Richo getting the boot half way through the year and 1 of the assistants grabbing it as a kind of trial. Nothing against them but it is time for change. When you have had guys in there longer than the head coach something isn't going right. The amount of coaching positions that have been open over the last 10 years and we are still stuck with them???
This was a very good post.

Do what other clubs have done vefore and and a review and a clean out of the assistant coaches and change some of the recruiting staff.

I think everyone would agree that Billings is talented and probably our most talented but is it Richo stopping him converting set shots? It's more the make up of our side is so poor that Billings should be the cherry on the cake rather than the sponge. He's ideally a finisher who gets easy supply and hasn't run ragged to help out up field. We have 2 senior players who are AFL standard in Carlisle and Stuv, a few mid career in Robbo, Webster and Ross and a couple of talent kids coming through in Billings and Gresham. We then have the new draftees that could be anything. Our list is on the very poor side and with injuries on top of that our large group of B grade talent has been decimated. It would be a miracle worker that could get up the team we had out on Saturday night unless we were playing one of the bottom teams.
Totally agree with this. I didnt think we played too bad.
There were some good signs last week. We have so many players injured and were really blooding youth now.
TBH all this over the top reaction to our performances started after North smashed us but since then we can clearly see North actually turned out to be a pretty decent team in 18.
Alot of us myself included over reacted and i think because weve gone so far that way supporters are now having a hard time acknowledging that even though we lost were actually playing better footy.
Just look at Newnes v pies.
Then again it could be we looked better and kicked more goals then all year because we had more smalls than bigs in the fwd half.
We started to get our fwd defensive stops going and the whole 50 just looked way more open and dangerous.

Norm Smith was the AFL Coach of the Century. Starting at Fitzroy then guiding Melbourne to be the powerhouse of the 50s and early 60s for six flags, including 7 grand finals in a row and 8 in total.

But his reputation became legendary after he took over perennial battlers South Melbourne and guided them into the ‘final four’ in 1970.
His genius was to take a take of team of battlers with a few stars and mould them, and the club, into a powerful unit. Poor health cut Smith down from 1971.

Maybe I’m wrong, but if Clarkson could take us to the holy grail I reckon he would surpass Smith. Such a prospect may appeal to him, especially with him living Bayside. The work/life balance would be also good for him.

He doesn’t have anything else to prove at the Hawks. Unless we ask the question we’ll never know.

Yeah, the injuries to Bruce and Paddy ironically make us a more modern set up. It's interesting that WC seemed to finally be able to unpick the Tigers with some good strategic planning. Big forwards might come back. Darling looks like a gun al of a sudden.

Darling can move around though as can Bruce. Paddy can’t. Not sure Marshall can either. Big or marking forwards can work if they are very good players

Here is a rumour for you all... Paul Roos sounded out already by the saints. Richo has until years end to turn this around.

Not ******* clue if this is true and I am not saying I know anything more other then this is what is doing the rounds in a few AFL ponds this evening.

Wowee!

Both are believable. Certainly the richo one. David king reckons he is gone because the president still classes us as a top 4 side. He is in denial

Please No to Roos. Melbourne have been there done that. Home many more times at the crease does PR have in him? It would be a really unimaginative move, and if you're going to follow an unoriginal strategy you'd want to be sure it's going to pay off. And nothing is a sure thing, especially not wheeling out Paul 'Weekend at Bernies' Roos for one more shake.

Can we please try to think our way through this and come up with a strategy that suits the short and longer terms and also displays some sharp original thinking and analysis of our current situation? Up and down the line, where the Club is at, it all needs to be factored in and then, they need to head-hunt the brightest young mind in the game -- someone who brings fresh ideas but an absolutely hard edge. A leader.

Oh and we might be needing some on-field leaders too. :-/

I'll go ahead and say I personally very much underestimated the loss of Roo and Joey, etc.
