Riley to stay on at Carlton, but in new role
Carlton assistant Mark Riley is now expected to remain at the club in a development role, despite his former colleague Brett Ratten suggesting that staying could prove untenable given the club's treatment of him

Riley's decision came as sacked midfield coach Paul Williams yesterday publicly attacked the club's integrity. Williams believed he deserved a 12-month pay-out under his contract but a threatened legal stoush appears to have been avoided, with Williams accepting his three-month termination clause which was written into his deal.

Riley can have Barry Mitchell's old office on the opposite side of the ground to Malthouse's office...

Living in Qld, I'm not intimately familiar with assistants etc, so can someone shed some light on how Riley continues to get a gig at the highest level in the country? From what I've seen and his track record it appears that he has done absolutely nothing to improve any team he has been associated with.

Am I way off the mark here?

Signals are pointing to O'Bree being interested in a job with us.

What do we know about O'Bree?
Just doesn't strike me as a commanding individual in the way that Bradley and Lappin didn't either.
Apparently did some good things with the GC midfeild. But anyone could coach Abblett.

How i read what has happened.
Malthouse tells Carlton:
No need for a Senior assistant
No need for 2 midfield coaches
I want Wiley
I want O'bree for midfiled
I don't want Richardson
You sort the rest
Sounds fair to me

Last night (or was it the night before?), Swann said they hoped to announce the midfield coach within the next week.
It seems to be O'bree, but either way, we should know soon.

Riley's final payout would be 12months worth.... whereas Williams etc was only 3 months payout.. if you're going to pay an assistant a full payout might as well have him around the place moving witches cones and getting the snakes and coffees during gameday.

Andrew McLeod was also mentioned in the HUN today as being interviewed for an Assistant's role.

Think McLeod may have come to Melbourne recently.
The B & F may be an exciting night if we are using it as a platform to announce signings.

Just a question to stimulate conversation: Why would we think that one aboriginal ex-player may have more influence over our indigenous boys than any other coach?

ARE WE COLLINGWOOD?

was wondering the same. .. Least we cannot be accused of jobs for the boys so much any more. .. least not for the Blue Boys. .. We went from 80%+ blues coaches to none pretty quickly. ..

Just a question to stimulate conversation: Why would we think that one aboriginal ex-player may have more influence over our indigenous boys than any other coach?

Wouldn't know for sure but culturally he'd be able to better understand things and might be able to put things on a better level for that reason. ..

Good question, Post Starter Harker.
I don't think he necessarily would. If anything, though, I would suggest he would be an inspiration and a role model more than anything, and may be helpful off-field as well. The man is a legend and I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to emulate him. Having said that I want to emulate him, and I'm not indigenous.
For Yarran in particular, they seem to have fairly similar run and skill-sets.

Bunj has been forward coach at Norwood this year with Bassett. They've worked well together and it will be a shame to lose them both. Hopefully we win the flag next week as a send off to a great year.

Please refrain from taking anymore valuable personnel from us this year, thanks!

Possible look:

Mick Malthouse
Rob Wiley
Gavn Brown
Andrew McLeod
Shane O'Bree
Mark 'Bomber' Riley
Matthew Capuano
(possibly 1 more) - Luke Webster retains Development role?

Noted Malthouse comments today about having a reduced coaching outfit. He feels the more coaches in a club can create too many mixed messages, advice etc.
