Freo made the shock announcement tonight that Harvey has gotten the chop.

First off - WTF! A real surprise that one, didn't see it coming.

Amongst the early candidates Scotty Watters is rumoured to be linked to the vacancy.

Neeld has already been linked to the Doggies, Crows and Dees.

We already know Malthouse is out - we may also potentially lose Neeld and Watters.

Thats our head coach and potentially our midfield and defensive coach. We saw drastic changes last year with our list. We might get it again this year but this time with our coaches.

Interesting times!

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

Yet another textbook example of mismanagement by the Saints. Should have given him 4 years without question.

Great get by Freo. They scare me now.

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

Neeld wants to coach, so between the Crows, Dogs, Dees and Saints it looks like he will get a gig somewhere, he's been excellent for us and hard to see him being overlooked by 5 clubs. We might lose Watters too, but with Burns and Sanderson, both good mates of Buckley waiting in the fold I don't think it'll be too much hassle to replace them.

Still, not very happy to have so many coaches switching seats when we desperately need stability during the handover. If Bucks takes over fine but we really need to minimise the changes around him, worst case scenario going into next year with an unproven head coach with an unproven supporting cast.

I'm super suprised with that one, it's all happened in a matter of hours. Now that changes everything, there's now the crows, melbourne, dogs and saints who don't have a coach. I have a feeling that the saints will lock in Robert Harvey as their coach, if not maybe Rodney Eade.

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

Word is Ross Lyon has already accepted the position.

Seen the writing on the wall? Probably a good get but I think Freo have some players that wouldn't like to play under Rossy. He never seemed to know how to allow freedom of expression in his players.

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

I heard that Freo offered St.Kilda pick 30 + a player for Ross Lyon, but St.Kilda said "no"...they wanted much more...so Ross walked :p

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

Most likely impact on us is that we get Fyfe for pick #30... in the National Draft that is.

Disappointing for the cockframers, but it should help them in trade week. Hell, they may even score the odd goal on match days now

Will be a very good side next year! Like their proactiveness and I think it might be a sign of things to come for their offseason.

Rated Mark Harvey as a coach. Think he can still be a very good senior coach for a club if he wants to be.

But Ross Lyon is a nice get! Good move for his coaching career! Was getting stale at St Kilda and is not a rebuilding coach. Great get Fremantle!
He adds that accountability and plays for the week to week wins. They have the maturity on their list and are only one Brendan Fevola off being a top 4 and potentially contending side.

Will be interesting to see if a club takes Neeld. Would be a dam good get!

People keep bringing these two up as if it is a given they will come straight over to us. It's almost like the more it's said the more it becomes a fact. I'm not so optimistic especially as these two will likely be heavily considered for the same vacancies. Don't get me wrong it would be awesome but I'm just not as confident. And sorry for singling this post out Zahki been thinking it for awhile whenever it comes up.

The interesting thing in this is that Goddard (recently changed), Lyon, Harvey & Nathan Buckley are all personally managed by Craig Kelly. Normally other ESP clients go under the gudiance of Dan Richardson.

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

I wonder why Freo decided to give Harvey the arse? Weren't injuries what cruelled Freo this year? Seems a bit unfair, unless he was whipping them on the training track and causing the injuries.

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

Was Harvey really that good of a coach? I heard that he was not the best communicator and really struggled to relate to players.

They dumped Ross

His communication skills weren't the problem, apparently he was poor tactically, especially on matchday.

A 38/59 win/loss record doesn't look too flash after all.

Freo will make the eight next year, and may push for top 4, but Ross Lyon will never coach a premiership team, he has one style, and it's a home and away style that fails in finals, or at least Grand Finals.

Thats fine, you have a point. But my thinking if that the only way Collingwood can't lure over an assistant coach is if they get a senior coaching gig elsewhere. Obviously if Burns scores the coaching job at Adeliade he won't be turning that down to come to us, but if you had to be an assistant, why not at Collingwood? With the ties to Buckley I don't think it's a stretch to say we could get them if the club set it's mind to it. Simply put if Neeld and Watters leave I expect the club to replace them with the best assistant coaches available, and those two are the names that immediately jump to mind, connections to Buckley or not.

Rumour from the rags is that he was responsible for overruling medicos which contributed to the issue. Thats the rumour anyway.

If the rumours about Goddard being in our sites are true then our people should be in his ear and up his clacker quick smart.

I reckon he won't want to hang around that place as he craves a premiership.

p.s. The news that Lyon did the deal on his own is absolutely staggering. I'm floored.

Re: The Coaching Merry-Go-Round - How Will it Affect Us

He'd have trouble keeping his crayon inside the lines.

For mine Harvey was fantastic for the club. Would be among the top 7-8 coaches around the league. Helped create a strong culture and made the team competitive and developed them in a hurry. Has created a hell of a team for Ross Lyon to take over and Lyon won't have to do a hell of allot.

Would hope there is allot more respect around the league for Harvey.

Is an AFL quality coach. If a club take him on as an assistant. They will have added a hell of an assistant!
