Was in Daylesford over the weekend. Got down to -2 on the Friday night/Saturday morning. Stepping out into the early morning air was certainly a nice crisp wake me up.

''Today will be the shortest day of the year in Australia.

The winter solstice occurs in Australia today, marking the moment the southern hemisphere reaches its furthest tilt away from the sun. At this moment in time, the sun appears at its southernmost point relative to Earth's equator, causing this to be the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.

From tomorrow, the sun will appear to progressively move higher in our sky, causing each day to become slightly longer than the lasts until the summer solstice in late December.

While the solstices are used in some countries to mark the beginning or end of winter and summer, the Australian seasons are defined by calendar months. Winter commences at the start of June, while summer begins on December 1st. This is in line with the definitions used in the United Kingdom and has the additional benefit of making is easy to compare statistics at seasonal and monthly scales.

The latest sunrise of the year actually occurs a few days after the solstice. So, while this is the year's shortest day, mornings actually will continue to get darker in the near future.''

We are only just getting colder weather this week or at least on average for this time of year.
So far it's been the warmest start to winter ever.
We are 3 degrees above average for max temps and 2 above average for mins.

Currently 11.4 degrees down to 3 tonight.

28 to 32 or so. Can get a little warmer away from the water. Can be humid at times.

Canada is just about on top of bucket list I reckon.
Have heard so many good things about the country, and would really like to see it one day.

Yeah, I love where we are and have seen some good and not so good. Scenery can be amazing. Day-to-day life and people are pretty much the same.

Huge country and I need to see more. Would love to get to the Maritime Provinces but it's pretty much cheaper to head back to Australia.

Quite a brisk morning today.
Got down to 0.6 degrees but felt like it was in the minuses.

Currently 8.1 degrees but sunny.

I'm finding the current story about the extreme cold snap coming this weekend a little funny. They are talking about Saturday and Sunday morning getting down to minus six in Canberra. Not really a cold snap as we have been around minus 4/5 degrees for majority of the last fortnight. Other than Tuesday night, which was such a warm and balmy positive 4 we considered getting out the fans every morning has been below zero.

As I ride to work 95% of the time I reckon there has only been 3 times this year that I've had to put on full wet weathers in Melbourne. Very dry so far.

TheKanga it seems you are suspended but, how are the winters in Hobart? It is one place I could see myself moving to one day as most of my family is in Tassie but I am not sure I could make it through the winters without being an even more miserable bastard than I currently am.

Similar to Melbourne but about 3-4 degrees colder.

Not to be that guy but isn't a different type of cold? Like the wind just cuts right through you? I grew up in a place where the frosts would hang around most of the day and I don't think I can go back to that.

I've never lived in Hobart, but for five years I drove to Hobart every day for work, arriving around 6-7am and leaving around lunch. I must say, Hobart seems to still get a lot of sun in winter, and yes, that southerly is absolutely brutal, but theres not too many unbearable days. I've experienced more miserable winter days in Melbourne!

Melbourne winters are pretty tame really. I thought they were cold until I moved to the country where we regularly had minus temps in the mornings with lots of frosts and, at one stage, frozen water pipes! I rarely even wear a coat in Melbourne, let alone gloves and scarfs and the like.

We have cold winters but it only rarely goes below zero due to it's geographic location.
Also Mt Wellington protects the city as well.

In comparison to Melbourne generally 2-4 degrees colder.
Particularly colder in the daytime due to the sea breeze we get every afternoon and the accompanying windchill.
We get some frosts and usually a dozen or so days every winter that don't warm above 10 degrees.
