The Collingwood Chant

Whatever the result on Friday night. There is no payback what so ever.

Yeah I hate how the media say things like that. Winning on Friday night will not get us the flag back. Winning will put us 2 games clear of the cats and make it harder for them to make the top 4/8. That should be our motivation and the fact the win gets us closer to the top 4.

A 10 goal win would put a dent in their top 4 aspirations though - not quite elimination, but it would make it very tough for them to win the GF particularly with a list as old as theirs. I could see them winning 3 consecutive games in September but not 4.

Winning wouldn't be revenge, but I can't say I wouldn't have a grin after the beatings they've dished out to us.

Regardless, I don't mind what happens as long as no injuries/suspensions and we rack up the 4 points. If we do that, no matter how badly we play or whatever the context of the game, I will be satisfied.

I completely disagree.

I love the chant, but can't stand it when it is done prematurely. Being at the GF last year, I just thought shut up when it started.

The Geelong fans held off and timed it nicely ... perfect retribution. They saved it for when there was no chance of a comeback and gave it to us good.

As mentioned above, let's just win the game. Save the chant for the big ones IMO.

Why do people seem to think that the chant means we have the game won? and therefore if we don't win we are to be mocked for 'getting ahead of ourselves'. It's a chant, not a gold jacket! Can't it just mean we are trying to spur on the team? I don't see how it is any different to the standard "collingwood clap clap clap*" which is done at pretty much any break in play, whether we are up by 10 or down by 10 matters not.

I see the chant as more of a verbal gold jacket than a motivational tool for the players. If we do it in a losing game it looks a bit silly.

No way, it's a way to fire up the players. Any tosser can chant when the game has been won already. The Collingwood chant should be echoing throughout the stands for the duration of the game, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree 100%, the chant started in finals and Grand Finals years ago, and is most famous for getting started in the last quarter in 1990, and obviously in 2010 also.

It is a victory chant, the old "Collingwood, clap, clap, clap, Collingwood" is our motivational chant, and always has been, nothing has changed, and ever will.

I feel embarrassed when it's started at the wrong time, like it was on Grand Final day last year.

I've never joined in any earlier then the third quarter of the 2010 prelim, when that game was over.

The chant was fantastic in 2010 but makes me cringe now. It has been devalued by being brought out in nothing home and away games and should be put away until finals, or maybe even the grand final.

I won't be chanting tomorrow night.

It is rubbish when done half baked.

2010 prelim was as good as i have heard it. In a strange way, it is almost more exciting knowing you are winning your way to a grand final than knowing you are going to win the grand final. Almost!

When it really took off in that prelim, it felt like all pies supporters were, for the first time in a while, believing this is real and we are going to win a flag. Little did we know what a heart pounding GF was left to be played!

And i agree It is not really a fire them up when down chant or a general victory chant. It is more of a climb to the top of the mountain and stand above them all beating your chest as they look up utterly inferior and defeated chant.

It is powerful when indisputable, and wasted any other time.

....

I respectfully disagree.

The chant came out loud and proud last week at a **Brisbane home game**.

Again, a **Brisbane home game**!!!

How cool is that???

Surely we're not too cool for school to celebrate that!?

I agree the chant definitely had some extra meaning behind it in the 2010 prelim, it was an awesome moment. But I think that has given people a skewed impression of the chant and it's normal meaning.

It's great fun, the other supporters really really hate it, they generally try to drown it with boos but it never works. The players have said they like it, so I say pump it out as often as you like, whether we are winning or losing. We are collingwood, hear us roar :p

Some fans tend to start it during the worst times of the match and it pisses me off. The chant is a last queter thing or it sounds like crap.

Should be saved for when the side gets a big run on.

In the 2010 Prelim, it was during the second quarter when we had just really asseted our dominance. Game was far from over, yet it was perfect.

It's something that should happen naturally. There shouldn't be rules applied to it. If it feels right, do it. It mostly feels forced these days.

Jolly particularly enjoyed the "Collingwood" soccer chant that was struck up several times during Friday night's preliminary final win over Geelong.

"I thought the roar after the anthem was unbelievable, but then the chant was just ... it sounded like everyone in the crowd was chanting it," he said.

"That (raised) the hairs on the back of my neck, it was awesome.

"To be on the ground when that's going, I actually looked around the crowd and thought 'geez, this is bloody loud'.

"Hopefully everyone does it next week for us."

I love the chant and so do the players. Stop being a bunch of babies and join in! Plus it gives the opposition the shits, which makes it even better!

COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLINGWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It may have been just where I was sitting but I thought the chant started before the 2010 prelim. I remember hearing it as Geelong played their pump up video as they were running out. It would had to have been intimidating hearing it as your running out on the ground.

Despite what Jolly said I think it does us a disservice when started early.

It reeks of arrogance and would serve to motivate the opposition. Made me cringe last night when we were three goals up and it started.

Leave it for the last 5 minutes when we have the game sealed. It sounds great when done at the right time but gives the impression that we have games in the bag when we most certainly do not.
