Opinion The Collingwood Versus Port Adelaide Jumper Debate continues...

The AFL commission overlords are there to keep order.

If we don’t have order then you run the risk of everyone running around making up their own rules.

If Fremantle suddenly declared they were “ merging “ WAFL South Fremantle FC and claiming all their flags as club history, there would be an uproar.

Thats no difference to what Port Power are doing.
So you don't like the merger so you are just going to pretend that it never happened because it shouldn't have happened? Problem is it already did happen, it's too late and you are living in the past.

Not forgetting that it was Richmond's refusal to wear a clash strip that saw Port wear THIS jumper at Adelaide Oval in the 2014 AFL finals series:

I am not too sure that is true because we did wear our clash jumper for that game. It was when our clash jumper was horrible. Basically our home jumper but with yellow down the sides.

It was a weird set of circumstances caused by the AFL's previously wishy washy clash jumper policy. It certainly wasn't Richmond's refusal, it was just that you didn't really have a proper clash jumper because the AFL had approved one that didn't really do it's job. That's 100% on the AFL for not enforcing it earlier.

The AFL deemed that your clash had too much black, so asked for us to wear our clash.

We said no, but we'll wear the PBs (notably this was approved in a couple of hours because we needed the go-ahead to produce them, and Collingwood were not consulted. Funny how that works when it's convenient for the AFL)

Then they decided your clash needed to be worn anyway, despite us having a lot of white on our kit and us wearing the white shorts.

It did lead to some clubs being forced to produce more contrasting clash guernseys over the next season or 2, and obviously Richmond made theirs famous pretty quickly.

Port Adelaide Football Club itself says they are completely different clubs with separate histories...
View attachment 1473457

It says right there in the footer "A FOOTBALL POWER SINCE 1870"

Which means the Port Adelaide Football Club never relinquished any of the heritage and in fact actively claimed it the entire time, even prior to the re-merger. But this argument is dumb as * anyway. We've worn the bars 5 times at AFL level. We wore it prior to the re-merger and we've worn it since.

None of the stakeholders in this argument are trying to argue that the guernsey doesn't belong to Port. That's the exclusive purview of smooth brained internet posters.

I thoroughly recommend people read the threads about this on the Port page. It's given me months of entertainment and laughs. The stuff they say is incredible.

What's incredible raymond? Let's discuss.

It's all amateur hour stuff, look at proper leagues where teams have very similar "home" jumpers. They manage by having alternate jumpers.

In fact nearly every national league in the world except ours has this reality
No other league in the world has Collingwood. They're 'special' mate.

This tells us you know nothing about marketing. Each AFL club has a brand focused around a unique colour scheme and key design element. Collingwood's brand equity is intristinically linked with the black and white stripes. Port need to accept that on a national level their brand is now focused around the black teal and white chevron.
News to me. We share colours with Carlton, Essendon and Richmond share a jumper design as did Sydney and Melbourne for a long time.

This is not a Port Adelaide v Collingwood issue, it is about the AFL preserving the brand integrity and protecting the rights of its existing clubs.

If Glenelg joined the AFL instead of Port, Richmond would have the same right to protect its jumper and colours.
If Norwood joined the AFL instead of Port, Melbourne would have the same right to protect its jumper and colours.
If West Adelaide joined the AFL instead of Port, Essendon would have the same right to protect its jumper and colours.
If South Adelaide joined the AFL instead of Port, Carlton would have the same right to protect its jumper and colours.
If Central District joined the AFL instead of Port, Western Bulldogs would have the same right to protect its jumper and colours.

No two clubs share the same colours and basic design. Carlton and Geelong are both navy blue and white however the design elements are completely different. Carlton is all navy with a white monogram and Geelong is white with navy hoops.

Well galaxy brain marketing guru here might want to consider the concept of target markets and how there is almost zero overlap wrt Port and Collingwood.
Collingwood's target market is Australia-wide. We have members in every state and territory and our merchandise is sold in retail stores nationally.

I can tell the difference between the Prison Bars and the Collingwood jumper no problem.

Still not the same club no matter how much you spin it

John Cahill was Port Adelaide coach in the SANFL and became AFL coach in their inaugural year with the SANFL operations in 1996 transferring to the AFL in 1997. Not the same club though.

Port Adelaide were based at Alberton in the SANFL pre-1997, and in the AFL post-1997. The 1997 SANFL Magpies were formed as part of the AFL license agreement, forced to be based at Ethelton due to fear they'd dominate the SANFL with AFL resources. Not the same club though.

The AFL even permitted the father-son rule for sons of Port Adelaide SANFL players pre-1997. Not the same club though.

Why would they merge if it was one club?

Congratulations, so do we. But you’re talking about the absolute fringe of your member base, people who have moved interstate or perhaps have a family tie to the club. The vast vast majority of members for each respective club is in their home state and that’s where the vast vast majority of marketing efforts are directed. I have never seen a Collingwood marketing initiative on the ground here is SA (outside of your cheer squad having a pregame get together if you want to count that) because your administration are at least self aware enough to know that it wouldn’t be worth the time or dollars. It’s absolutely laughable to argue that SA is a genuine target market for Collingwood and vice versa for Port Adelaide and Victoria.

The Port Adelaide Football club which played in the SANFL in 1996 is the club that was awarded the AFL licence and is the club that is now playing in the AFL.
That some of you think some new club was born overnight and be allowed to use the Port Adelaide football club name and not end up in court is just dumb.

If the Port Adelaide football club from the SANFL is not the club that entered the AFL then there is no way they would of allowed a new identity called Port Adelaide to enter the AFL.

People get confused because of the Port team in the SANFL but that was simply to keep a presence. All the Same staff that worked for the PAFC in the SANFL in 1996 continues their role with the club as they entered the AFL.

As for the jumper well it is what it is. Once a year doesn't bother me, in fact many times per year wouldn't bother me. It is their jumper. Put a middle stripe of Teal 10mm wide down the jumper and then that solves everything. Still black and white stripes with one barely visible 10mm Teal stripe. That suits Collingwoods requirements and issue goes away.

No other league in the world has a team as insecure as Collingwood and if they do they rightly laugh at them rather than pandering to them.

The Bulldogs are a great example.

Mature enough and confident enough in their own skins to allow GWS to wear a red, white and blue heritage jumper.
