Hey Jimmy, Any updates?

Not that I've noticed.

To be honest I'm reading less articles these days but I don't think I've missed anything.

Contracts tend to see activity during the mid-season break and, of course, after the season finishes. That means pretty soon we might start talking to players like Butler, McKinley and Schofield and I should be up on it as I'll start watching more closely.

"Nisbett also confirmed the club had completed a contract extension with assistant coach Scott Burns until the end of 2011."

Here's the source.

Brilliant work. :thumbsu:

If you (or anyone at all for that matter) spot another one hit up this thread and we'll have the list nice and up to date. :thumbsu:

So Bones, Lynch, Hansen, Nicoski and Embley are all contracted for next year? Do we seriously have to put up with ANOTHER year of that same shit?

Stenglein was contracted for 2010 but we managed to come to some kind of deal with him. IIRC that's why we took a PSD pick and not a later pick in the national draft.

Anyway, I'm sure we could work something out with one or more of those guys.

So the only guys who can be signed by GC are:

Beau Wilkes - Signed a 2 year contract (2009, 2010) when elevated in 2008.
Ben McKinley - Signed a 2-year contract (2009, 2010) in September 2008.
Matthew Spangher – Believed to have signed a 1-year contract (2010) in October 2009.
Sam Butler – Signed a 2-year deal (2009, 2010) in April 2008.
Scott Selwood - Believed to have signed a 3-year contract (2008, 2009, 2010) when drafted.
Tony Notte - Believed to have signed a 3-year contract (2008, 2009, 2010) when drafted.
Will Schofield - Contract believed to expire at end of 2010.

From that lot the only player I really wouldn't want to lose is Schofield.

Surely he deserves a 2 year contract extension about now?

Seems that our beloved Eagles are no longer releasing the length of contracts. I'd like to think that this thread had something to do with that but regardless of the cause, if we dont get anything from the media this thread may as well be gone.

Changes: S. Selwood, Swift

Source:http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/eagles/7588830/selwood-swift-agree-to-stay-at-eagles/

Scott Selwood and Tom Swift have each agreed to new two-year contracts, according to a report from a leading player agent.

Email Gary Stocks and tell him as a member you want to know the details of these contract lengths.

Nah, I'm all good posting a collection of contract lengths here if the information becomes publically available through the media, or even through word of mouth, but when the club or players want that stuff to be kept private you have to repect it.

Having said that, it looks like a "leading player manager" spoke up (probably because he knows it's in his best interest) so we're good to keep going. Thanks for the link, Mr Moderator. :thumbsu:

So just a few notes:
1. Swift: I suspect that the old idea of him signing for 3 years when drafted was wrong (?), hence he signed a new contract now. Otherwise it would be an extension, right?

2. LeCras is probably posted under the wrong year but I wont move him until I read through this thread and find out for sure.

3. The article FiveStrings linked says we're looking to sign Butler and McGinnity next. I find it hard to believe we'd be looking to extend McGinnity when beyond 2011, before we extend guys like Waters, Sheppard and Hurn. As a result, I suspect I messed up McGinnity the last time I updated him, and his contract actually runs out at the end of this year, not at the end of 2011.

I don't personally get the idea of keeping contracts in-house, as other clubs would know the contract statutes of at least a few players, as player managers are always going to explore other options if for no other reason to give a comparison point to West Coast's offer. Failing that they'll contact a journo and get him to float a story about them being out of contract and see whether any interest is registered. This may just be the way things work in Melbourne though. If clubs are interested in a player and don't know his contract status they'd probably just ring his manager and find out. So ultimately I don't think it is a better operation strategy in this business, as you're really only controlling the flow of information to your own fans

1. Yes, I think it is fair to say that assumption was incorrect. Furthermore, I'd suggest that if Naitanui and Swift only signed 2 years contract initially that the other draftees from that year (Jordan Jones, Shuey & Smith) are all out of contract this year.

2. LeCras is under the right year, he signed a 3 year deal in 2008 and then received an extra year (bringing things to 2012) as a reward for his excellent season last year. I'd imagine as part of the extension they restructured his contract to lift his pay grade for this year and next as well.

3. Re-read the article. You're only looking to re-sign Butler. McGinnity's already signed on. He was out of contract, having only received a 1 year deal at the end of last season.

I see what you're saying about contracts being in the pubic however I can imagine the club also wanting them to be private because fans can get critical of bad contracts, like Hansen's, and the club doesn't need that kind of trouble.

1. Agreed. I'll update this. I actually got warned by FiveStrings in this thread, many months ago, that they only got 2 year deals but I didn't listen

2. That's as logical as anything I could think up. I'm turely confused about the LeCras situation but it doesn't really matter because he's from WA and the last player we'd let go.

3. I'm confused here as well. I've got a source for McGinnity's 2 year deal ("The Sunday Times 06.09.09 ") but what you say makes sense. I think I'm going to sit on it for a while and see what happens.

2. That's as logical as anything I could think up. I'm turely confused about the LeCras situation but it doesn't really matter because he's from WA and the last player we'd let go.
It is fairly common in the current era with plenty of sides offering 1 or 2 year extensions on top of existing deals to protect their players against being signed by GC & GWS (especially when they get 2 years to sign their quota of uncontracted players instead of GC's 1). You saw it with Nic Nat getting a 1 year extension onto his rookie contract halfway through last year.

Here's a good example: Heath Grundy from the Swans. You can see quite clearly here he signed a 2 year deal at the end of last year and the Swans paraded all those players in front of the NSW media so the contract details are unlikely to be wrong. This week they've announced he's signed a new 3 year deal, in reality what has happened is they've extended his current deal by an extra 2 years and almost certainly upped his pay he was going to get under the original deal.

FYI: I'm fairly certain my source on McGinnity getting a 1 year deal at the end of last year was Sportal, unfortunately their archives don't go back that far otherwise I would've linked to it.

Shuey and Smith out of contract at EOY is a worry.

Hopefully these games for Smith will encourage him to stay.

Shuey looks like he is enjoying himself over here besides the injury run but you never know...

If we lose any of Shuey, JoJo, Schofield or Smith I'll struggle to watch us in 2011. I see little upside to 2010 and if they leave or aren't pursued for a contract renewal by the club it would be a fitting finish to the debacle that has been Westcoast in 2010.

The signing of Bones, Hansen, Nicoski, Embley and Lynch to the end of 2011 while some of best young talents are under a cloud is a total disgrace and shows the utter incompetence of our admin.

Totally over estimated the quality of those players. Can't even contribute to the side in the short term, won't over the term of their contract and have nothing to offer the club beyond those contracts.

No need to get that excited. They are trying to extend Shuey's contract, which I had heard was to 2011 anyway, out for another couple of years. Smith will be in the same boat now, because until 4 weeks ago many people were undecided about him.
