Sad to see (hear) Skull retiring. A great character who really added to the whole experience.

How about that batting line up again? Watson same old. Bailey looked all at sea.

This is a squad built for this series and next.

Not convinced by Bailey - came in on ODI form and hasn't impressed. He's no sure thing for South Africa.

Typical Watson. For the life of me I don't get why he is untouchable.

It worries me if we intend to go into the next series with the same batting line-up.

Bailey isn't test level. Actually, his record at four day first class level is mediocre.

He strikes me as an intelligent, engaging guy who obviously brings much to the team dynamic and, of course, leadership. That he's not up to it with the bat, though, is kind of a critical point.

Smith at 5 and Bailey at 6 is the soft underbelly.

Yeah, it's amazing that having convincingly won the Ashes, we still have only Clarke and now Warner as certain selections (well Watson probably is....but that's another issue) who deserve their spots on results alone.

Rogers and Bailey I really like. They seem to fit the team well as people and a happy team is a team likely to perform. However, the runs need to be there too and Bailey just isn't up to it whilst Rogers probably is but just hasn't made enough of his chances and at his age the door will close soon.

Smith will have his spot for a while I think. I like his attitude. Has balls and is up for a scrap but the question on whether he is good enough for a long term spot in the batting line up is still open for debate.

Watson offers plenty but as previously discussed needs to bat 6. His bowling is a real asset IMO and he could be destructive lower in the order but we need someone more bankable at 3.

I guess the question is who exactly is the future in the batting stakes? Hughes, Lynn, Burns and Maddison seem to be the stand-outs. You might make the case for Ferguson too.

That Bailey can have a place ahead of Hughes on batting talent and results on the board, not to mention the 'eye on the future' thing, is something that will be rectified soon enough, I believe.

Ok, how mature are we as a team?

If we can chase down 230 on the MCG (and I can't remember off hand the last time we did), it will be as great an achievement as the win in Adelaide in 2006.

He has already dropped 8kg in the last 13 months.
Shows you how overweight he was. Still looks too heavy. His best form in the test team aligns with his best level of fitness.

Agree on the likely future talent. Reckon if burns punches out a couple more centuries this summer he should go to sa. Hughes almost has to go too. Maddinson should be looked at more for next summer ahead of rogers. Lynn really could be something. Wouldn't hurt to have him around the one day team. We will want to establish 2-3 new batsman by the time we return to England to retain the ashes. It should start happening from Sydney or bare minimum sa.

I can't have Bailey. Not up to it. Value the morale boost he has provided but clearly not a test level talent.

Rubbish. Watson doesn't look overweight at all.

Agree with Burns, Hughes, Lynn and Maddison. They have to be given exposure sooner rather than later. Id throw Lynn in for Bailey in the Sydney test but it wont happen since you dont change a winning team bullshit.

They seem desperate to get a look at Faulkner in the test side. I'm not convinced he is good enough to bat at 6. And I would rather bat Watson at 3 than shuffle the batting order to keep Bailey in the side.

We can't seem to find a batsman that's good enough to bat at 6 let alone an all-rounder.

Let's assume Bailey is repreived of his spot for the next Test (which is perhaps unlikely).

Who would be the next (bats)man ready to go and bat in the No.6 position?

Any of these guys? Usman?

Khawaja is injured I think, did a hammy in a T20 a few days ago.

We haven't played anyone there for more than a couple of tests. As soon as Hughes made some runs there they bumped him back up the order. Same with smith. Since hussey retired that position has been through a constant rotation.

Personally I think they should play Hughes there until he works out his game at test level and then send him up the order to replace Watson at 3. But that won't happen. Looks like Doolan is there to cover Watson if withdrawn with bailey likely to be dropped for Faulkner and Harris for coulter-Nile if further changes are made.

I get the feeling Bailey's immediate test future hinges on Watson's fitness. Pretty clear Boof wants a 5th bowler. If Doolan replaces Watson, I reckon they'll bump Hadden up to 6 and bat Failkner at 7.
I wouldn't mind seeing them bring Doolan in for Bailey if Watson comes up. Much better introduction to test cricket.

Didn't mind Bailey getting a gig. He was dominating ODI and that is often how players get a look in. Combine that with his status as a good leader and our team trying to re-establish themselves and it was worth a shot.

Unfortunately it has been proven he just isn't up to Test cricket and we now have to try someone else. Certainly won't be going to South Africa.

At least that should be the end of the Bailey as test batsman experiment. Sadly, not up to it.

Looks a difficult wicket to me.
