Good start to have 'em 3/55 despite Haddin and Starc spudding it up.

Haddin continues to drop catches at crucial points all the while getting lauded for how great he's keeping while Starc remains the friendliest 145km/h fast bowler going around. When he's on he'll smash some stumps and cannon in to pads but he's really a one trick pony when those in swingers aren't getting through (or are 3m wide of the lefties).

Liked the look of Johno early and Hazel went for more runs than he deserved too. Attacked the stumps and had quite a few edges.

How costly will dropping Root be?

Potentially match defining it turns out. Root did not put a foot wrong after that and proceeded to destroy us. Def should've been snapped up, but same time wasn't the easiest catch either.
Watched the whole thing yesterday and very good day's cricket - albeit frustrating things didn't quite go our way as much as they should've. With the small grounds, slow wickets and Duke ball, this is going to be another topsy turvy series and one we'll need to be at our best to win. Hopefully we can wraps things up quickly this morning. Can't wait to watch Warner bat.

Poor reversal. That's out IMO. He caught the ball and then it touches the ground.

It's not like he dropped it and then picked it up off the deck. The ball was always in his hands and just touches ground as he goes down. Still had full control.

I reckon they made the right call. Super slow mo distorts the timeframe. Didn't get his fingers fully under the ball and it grazed the ground. That's not out in my mind.

The poms made a good fist of it. Johnson went wicketless, but from the couple of hours yesterday that I caught, he wasn't too far off. Lacked a bit of consistency, but also looked dangerous at times.

Rogers is looking good. These English conditions suit him down to the ground.

We're feeding off a very poor line to Rogers. Leg stump attack isn't going to phase him at all.

On an unrelated, but booze/cricket watching topic: where is James Muirhead at at the moment? I remember he had that great T20 season last year, but I can't remember him doing much at all this season.

Gee, those Hunter Valley reds are going down a treat at the moment.

Aussies in a bit of trouble here. Smith and Clarke both getting starts is really disappointing. Rogers managed to get himself out in the 90s.

Not expecting much of a contribution from Watson. Prove me wrong please

Yeah I hope Watson does well, would be a good time to stand up.

Could've really put ourselves in a strong position today, but when Clarke and Smith are both getting out to freakin Mooen Ali - you know it's not your day. Rogers batted well, but will be bitterly disappointed in the way he went out. He really lost the plot there giving 3 chances in 3 balls. Voges dismissal also regretable. If Watson does not step up he simply has to be banished for eternity.

Typical Australian Innings in England. Start well. Collapse. All batsman getting starts and none going on to make a hundred and anchor the innings (honourable effort by Rogers) is incredibly disappointing on a pitch that appeared to have few demons. Looking towards Watson, Haddin and the bowlers to salvage a score of about 400 to keep us in the match. As this is a live match I expect Watson to go out in the second over after the re-start. Prove me wrong Watto! Need to bowl better in the second innings to have a chance.

Tend to disagree. No doubt the ball touched the ground but it didn't touch the ground before he had it and didn't slip out after he had it - which to me means he caught it. The ball making contact with the ground while he had caught it shouldn't discount it from being a catch. It's a close call but should have stayed with the on field umpires call IMO.

Irrelevant anyway as he didn't go on with it too long.

Didn't see Clarke or Voges dismissals but the fact they both got starts and got out is disappointing after Rogers and Smith both got out after being set too.

Really disappointed for Rogers. Have a lot of mates who constantly rage about the selectors and why Rogers shouldn't be in the team but I really admire him and he actually batted quite beautifully yesterday. Deserved a ton.

In a really tight spot now and need Watson and Haddin to get us as close as possible to their total. We could lead after the first innings or be a mile behind at this point. You never know what you'll get from those 2. Could be brilliant but the other option is probably more likely.

Didn't see much of the day two pitch, but on day one it was up and down alarmingly for a first day wicket. I'd think we'd need a first innings lead and then knock England over for an under par score to have any chance. Then again, the wicket might just turn into a low slow dull draw inducing strip.

I've just been watching the cricket series - 50s, 60s,70s and 80s - with Jnr. It amost reminds me of some of those old style doctored wickets! Not quite clouds of dust and microscopic insects flying off it though.

Losing those wickets to Ali hurt badly.

Watto did not prove me wrong

you SOB Watson! what a goddamn liability
Mitch marsh made about 300 runs in the tour matches and can bowl. If we have to have an all rounder let it be him! Or just play Shaun mash at 6 and let him play against the old ball. He is a stroke player. Only question is can he play spin.

He always makes around 30. Always looks in great nick. Hits some massive boundaries that exude confidence, then goes out.

Then his useful bowiing is about as penetrating as a beanbag these days.

Somehow, and why is completely beyond me, the breathless early assessment of Watson, 'open the bowling and bat at number 3' seems to still be sticking to his useless freakin' carcass.

He basically averages about 30 so you have to think the selectors will reward him for making his average.

It is hard to imagine what is keeping him in the side.
