I'm really not a fan of Wade's. Just a horrible keeper. His lapses cost wickets.

But I spose if you debuting 3 specialist batsmen, then adding some experience at seven makes sense.

Just depends if he has cleaned his keeping up enough to gamble on it with his much better batting I guess. Plus the three debutants in the top 6.

Whiteman won't be far away.

As long as Whiteman's injury concerns are behind him, and unless Wade does something spectacular, I think Whiteman will be in the test team sooner rather than later.

He's a fine player. And i have no doubt that he'll be a long-term prospect.

Just for lols Wade has four dismissals from seven wickets 'proving' that he really has improved his keeping (please note sarcasm font).

He's in there primarily for his sledging. And tough tattoos, I suspect.

I really hope he's improved as a keeper. And I want him to do well.

But yeah, I'll wait hopefully for my opinion to be disproved.

Wade has the highest first class average of any of the players brought in for this test and he bowls. Selectors way of sneaking in alrounder given handscomb could pull on the gloves? :)

It's a good thing.

Gee, our bowling was slightly illdsiciplined to the tailenders I thought.
Yeah. I just appreciate the poetic alignment with the heros journey. He will make runs, no doubt :)

Our bowlers Just wanted it to happen rather than make it happen.

Love the start to the innings. Renshaw backing his temperament and judgment. Love it!

Renshaw is a natural batsmen. Got the temprement and the quiet confidence.

I also think he wants to test himself. And because he's young, that's a powerfult thing.

Just saw the article on the best team of the last 40 years. Pretty tough ask to pick this. Sort of like the best Hawk team of the last 60 years.

Can't argue with the selections but for me, I would have Junior in my side every day of the week. Don't ask me who I would leave out. I don't have to make that call, thank god.

There are some mighty fine players didn't even make the short list per position - Junior was one of them.

Looking back over the years, one player stood out to me as the finest shot maker of them all. Absolutely loved watching him bat. Won't ever be considered an Australian great, but was a captain. That man is Graeme Yallop. Only one player was better to watch - David Gower. Unfortunately, the times when 'on song', were too few and far between.

Getting back to the 'team of the last 40 years', Perhaps I would have Mark Taylor over Langer. The rest is just about right, although big ?? over Mitch Johnson.

Link? or at least copy over the team? :)

Mine would probably be:
Hayden
Langer
Ponting
G.Chappel (assuming he makes it in the time period)
S.Waugh
Clarke
Gilchrist
Gillespie
Warne
Lillie
McGrath

Honourable mentions to Boarder (can't believe I had to leave him out!), Mark Waugh (amazing player to watch but his penchant for not going on and make big 100's costs him a spot). I felt Gillespie deserves his place even though I suspect others would pick maybe a McDermot or even Bruce Reid. I don't think Lee makes the side despite a great career either. I could be talked out of Gillespie but he was excellent at getting wickets while keeping the runs low allowing Lee, McGrath and Warne to be attacking. I think he could have had more wickets bowling in another era where he was the main main but yeah I could be talked into someone else.

Will look for the link.

You were close. Border in Clarke out, Johnson in Gillespie out.

And to me Mitch Johnson is doubtful. Had the capacity to put in those devastating spells, but had a habit of losing form frequently. Given the inclusion of Lillee and McGrath, I might have even given Terry Alderman a shot for the third quick. Lee, Dizzy, McDermott, Thommo, Reid - all worthy.

I'd have quite a few (mostly the ones you mentioned) ahead of Johnson. No where near consistent enough. World beater one series, liability the next. Results outside of Australia and South Africa (bouncy wickets) are vastly different to anywhere else.

So hard for the 3rd seamer and 4th bat. Ended up going with players who could offer a little in the other discipline.

Johnson's left arm adds variety over Harris and Lee/Thommo speed. Border's "Left-Arm Offspin" was under-utilised and provides something different.

Hayden
Warner
Ponting
Chappell
Border
S.Waugh
Gilchrist
Johnson
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

(Langer, S.Smith, Healy, Harris make up the squad of 15)

Interesting you put Warner in there Simon. I still see him as a crash and bash player and not all that reliable in the heat, but I admit his stats are holding up. Harris 'couldabeenacontender' except for constant injuries, but a great bowler.
