Cowan is now averaging 32 halfway through his 14th test. When do they make a call on him? After this series?

And when will they finally concede that they have to play 6 batsmen. Not bits and pieces players. Just six batsmen.
Got to pull the trigger now.
Who have they got on tour in reserve. Khawaja?... They haven't given him a chance to find form in the lead up to the tour. Treated him really poorly.
(Just saw Watson's dismissal again... Culpable)

The brother has a few very good mates in Australian cricket - all to do with his job.
Anyways, he tells me that K and Clarke do not get on very well. Not saying that's the reason he's not getting games, but it is a factor to bear in mind.
Said that they had Beer squarely as the second spinner until he did his shoulder. Maxwell was the project player for the tour. when Beer went down injure they had no other plans and went into a bit of a spin - no pun intended.

And so it goes.

You know what I find so horrible, and it's something that's been happening for over a year now, our bowling is strong. Whatever permutation we have in there is reasonably dangerous (except for this test) and I'd back them to dismiss sides. Spinning is an issue, moreso in India. Yet we constantly weaken the weakest part of our team - our batting - by omitting a batsman and playing an all rounder. That's on top of having a top 4 that has been fairly woeful.

Plenty examples over the years of personality clashes keeping someone out of the Australian team. Hodge & Elliott spring to mind. Shame with K, got some real potential there.
Agree with your assessment of our bowling and team balance. Just hope some of the batting prospects keep developing.
Staggered they were hanging their hat on Beer. Got to hope Agar develops, Holland gets fit and Fawar gets his citizenship before the ashes.

Phil Hughes and Nielsen...

Yes, I agree. We really need to get some solidity in our batting.

Better clarify... Hodge & Elliott didn't clash with each other, rather the skipper of the time.

I know. The Elliot story was one of the most tragic things I'd heard around cricket. Closely followed by the Hughes one, which is why I'm so happy to see him back in the test side.

Tell me, you seen much of Joe Burns? I see he was selected for Australia A and hit a ton. Brother said, late last year, he'd play for Australia one day soon.

Openers are a worry. Cowan has to go fast. Just a shield player, who's done well to get where he is, but is just too limited.

No, I haven't seen much of Burns. Always a good sign if they thrive when opportunities are presented.
As much as I don't like him in the top four, I think our only short term option is to shift Watson up to open. Gives us a right/left combo and he might stop thinking he's the next Viv Richards.

Burns is technically strong. Bloody 20/20 for the states seems to shift focus away from shield performances. They all loose the long form ideals for the middle of the summer and struggle to find the touch again. They need to start making some tough decisions re batting soon. We have probably the best stable of young quicks in the World. Need an opener and a 5 & quick!!! Cannot believe that the selectors are only months from ashes and still playing pick & miss!!!

5 out out 9 dismissals were due to horiztonal bat shots. He just haven't learnt from the first test.

I remember a series over there when Kumble was bowling to Steve Waugh. Waugh decided that the Cut and Pull shots were too risking on that pitch and kept the shots in the kit bag. Went on to grind out a hundred.

And a couple just caught at the crease with terrible footwork.
Henriques the only one who couldn't have done much about it. And can't blame Clarke with the field Dhoni was setting for him and the circumstances the other batsman left him in.
You think they'd never wondered why sub continent players are so wristy. They play with straight bats to take out the variable bounce and work the angles with the wrists... It's how you make runs in those conditions... As you say, put some low percentage shots in the bag and play the conditions.

Strange as it seems, I actually thought Maxwell looked like he could have the game to do all right. Don't think he has the head though. Until he got carried away trying to score quickly, his footwork was good, defensively solid and his shot selection was ok too. Reckon he figured he'd got himself in after 20 odd balls rather than continuing on for another 220 balls in the same vein like Clarke does.

Maxwell reminded me of Clarke in India where he made his 100 when he was a whipper snapper. He was a cat on the hot tin roof job. Didn't read the arm ball. Wasnt a slog.
You're right, it wasn't a slog, but I thought he'd started to try and force the pace and came unstuck.

Your correct but if thats his go then thats what he should stick to. You will get a good ball eventually that has your name on it so you must be positive and get the field pushed back.

Wade shits you to tears I swear. Worked so hard to play with a straight bat. His driving was a delight until sucked into a the cut shot to the top spinner. Bet it was across the seam too.

I missed Wade's innings, but that sort of thing is really frustrating. Particularly when you look at how his batting partner was going.

He batted well. Basically played straight.

Was rattled from the ball before when Dhoni should have stumped him. He was getting frustrated up until then though.

It was a good catch and another 30cm to his right and it would have been four.

Tell you what it should though: only Clarke and Wade actually played with the mindset of batsmen, actually applied some intelligence to their games.

This is just shit.

How the Indians have been playing - basically like real batsmen and being patient and getting used to the pitch/bowlers/conditions - just show how utterly culpable guys like Watson were.
