If I was India, I wouldn't bother picking a quick after I what I saw yesterday.

Cowan just had no clue. Watson is a front foot plonker. Warner is unknown.

I'd imagine that Harbijan will be warming up as we speak and they will roll out Kumble from retirement.

Gee Huss has left us up the creek for India. Not blaming him for his decision but thats the position we are in now.
 
Bear in mind Herath was the top wicket-taker in tests last year so the experience should have been good for them. Playing on the sub-continent wickets, though, will be a challenge.

Huss leaves a huge gap. Possible replacements have not shown great consistency in recent times. Need to perservere with one or two, though. Khawaja is the most likely. He is now 26 and needs time in the middle. Others I think are worthy of consideration are the Marsh brothers, but somehow I think they have shat in a nest somewhere.

I think if Khawaja could slot in down the order and find his feet it would be a good thing. While aspects of his temperament and hunger have been questioned, I reckon he's technically very sound; good on the back foot too. I think he could do alright in India, and it might just be the making of him. I think Sean Marsh has done his dash. And his brother is injured. Mitch will, catastrophic injuries and attitude issues notwithstanding, play for Australia in the not too distant future. He's a very exciting cricketer in my opinion.
 
SE Marsh is done. Was never up to the grade. Just can't convert starts into scores no matter how nice he looks at the crease. Still only averaging 35 at FC so can't expect him to be better at test level.

Kawahja has to be the one. Making runs in FC and List A matches. Gets his chance in the ODIs to show he can cut it at international level.

If this is the case, then Watson where does this leave Watson? We can barely afford to carry Cowan with a 30 something average, we can't afford to have Watson in the same boat.

"He feels every time he bats and then he gets injured bowling, he just loses a bit of momentum with his batting, which is probably fair to say. He wants to come back and bat, definitely. Once he feels his body is going well and that he feels he's cemented his batting position, we will then take another look at how we want to go with Shane in terms of bowling.

The Myth of Shane Watson

Shane Watson is desperate to be an allrounder who bats in the middle order and dominates like Freddie Flintoff. Then he wants to open the batting and still bowl his full overs. Then he’s happy to move down the order to three, as it puts less stress on him. Then he’s content to bat at four, and that it will help him bowl more overs. Now he’ll bat anywhere, but probably gets that his body won’t let him bowl.

That is Shane Watson.
 
The crazy thing about Watson is that despite him being tried everywhere and mostly failing, what keeps tempting the selectors is that his avg with Bat and Ball is better than Flintoff's figures!

Freddie played 79 tests in 11 years (7.18 per year)
Watson has played 38 tests in 7 years (5.43 per year)

I'd actually like to keep Clarke at 4. He's our best bat by a mile and has proven comfortable at 4.
If they're going to play Maxwell as a second spinner, I'd like to see a specialist bat at 6 and Maxwell bat at 8 in place of a quick.

Yes, this quest for an all-rounder drives me nuts. Maxwell, for my money needs to earn a position as a specialist: be that as a number 6 or as a bowler. The thing is, while people talk of his 'potential', I'm not sure he can command a test spot as a specialist. But as soon as they play him as an 'all-rounder' a different scale of assessment comes into play aka Steve Smith.

Yeah I see your point however Smith at least had a few runs on the board as a batsman. His technique looked very much a one day/slogger style though. He isn't making the same number of runs since then. Maxwell does have an average of over 40 but it isn't really the kind of record that gets you picked as a batsman. I only had him in there because I think they will pick him for the tour and play him on the spinner friendly pitches to save Clarke's back. If you drop Cowan, there is the chance of bringing in a Doolan or a Ferguson but can we say either are really proven at shield level? Doolan is a one season wonder in the mold of Forrest and Ferguson is talented but has a loooong history of making 50s not 100s. Has he overcome that this year? Not sure. So when faced with the decision to bring in a moderate talent like Doolan or Ferguson or trial a guy like Maxwell who appears to be an exceptional talent but completely unproven like Maxwell, it isn't clear cut for mine.

The guy they could bring in is D.Hussey as he bowls offspin as well. Not likely to take too many wickets but his push it through style might be effective on the sub-continent. Oh and he clearly has the best record at FC record in the country for active batsman.
 
Oh yes, wasn't critiquing your team, more the philosophy, fuzzy logic of the way they are selecting the current sides.

The notion that Maxwell could command a spot in the test side as a second spinner is laughable. Unless, people see something of a Shane Warne like development in him. That he could command a spot as a top order batsman, is almost as laughable but not as far out there. He averages in the low 40s with one or two tonnes, but he's not exactly a specialist batsman. Call him an allrounder and then those figures, for some absurd reason, are acceptable.

We don't have, especially with Watson re-evaluating his role, a player who is genuinely capable of playing the all-rounder role and tipping a specilaist out, in my opnion. Caveat here: someone like Johnson has to picked as a bowling who is able to contribute 'handy lower order runs'. Six or seven is just ridiculous for him.

I'm with Langers here for India: 4 specialist bowlers, keeper, 6 specialist batsmen.

I'll say one other thing on the second spinner for India scenario. If our average spinners struggle here. They'll really struggle bowling over there.

Exactly! Very different game. Lyon struggles when batsman are trying to just hold him out. We either need a batsman or a pie chucker who can get them playing shots!

The Lankans had a world class spinner, but he was rendered useless by the lack of runs to bowl to. Whoever our spinner/s is/are, we can't have a compromised batting line up. That last 100-150 with the tail will be crucial.

Funny.. I was thinking after I posted about the drawn series about stacking the side with batters than can bowl bits and bobs. It won't get them out but means we bat real deep.
