Rodney Hogg thinks Maxwell is terrific too.

We're ****ed.

They've named the squad for India:

Australian test Squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Ed Cowan, David Warner, Phil Hughes, Shane Watson, Matthew Wade, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Moises Henriques, James Pattinson, Xavier Doherty, Jackson Bird, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith.

On the bright side, there's no Michael Beer.

On the down side, that low score we got against South Africa might be under threat if the Indians serve up the usual raging turners. Our batting is still wafer thin.

Only because Beer injured his shoulder...

Anyone that saw Cowan trying to sweep Herath and the Dill know that he's not the man for India. Would have preferred to see George Bailey in his place.

Getting out to Maxwell/Henriques is equivalent to Slater and Taylor got their wickets.

This is my lineup from that squad for the 1st test. Its not necessarily the lineup I think the selectors will go with.

Watson
Warner
Hughes
Clarke
Khawaja
Wade
Henriques
Johnson
Siddle
Lyon
Doherty

Henriques or Maxwell. Like choosing between cholera and dysentery.

The correct answer is pick a sixth batsman.

Oh, my...

Maxwell's bowling 'better and better' - Arthur

"Glenn Maxwell has not played a first-class match in more than two months but his work in the nets to master the offspinner's stock ball has impressed Australia's selectors as they finalise the Test squad for the upcoming tour of India. The coach Mickey Arthur has suggested a spinning allrounder will be part of the Test squad, to be announced later this week, and Maxwell is a leading candidate after narrowly missing out on a Test debut against Sri Lanka in Sydney earlier this month."

Hmmm, so our 'second spinner', has been learning his craft in the Nets over the past few months, whilst the indian spinners have probably been learning their craft since they were 5.

I'm just amazed, I really am. An allrounder is a blessing, not a necessity. The reason they are so sought after, so revered, is cause there are so few really good ones. For every Jacques Kallis or Dan Vettori's, there are 5 or 6 Dominc Corks, Chris Lewis's and Roger Harpers. Can Maxwell, Smith, or Henriques justifiably get into the side as a batsman? or a bowler? if not, then they don;t warrant a spot in the side.

Based on what I've seen, the term "net bowler aptly quantifies Maxwell's current potential as a bowler. There are (supposedly) better judges than myself who rate Maxwell, and I sincerely hope for Australia's sake they are right.

Gee ... one world class batsman (Clarke), an adequate pace attack, wicketkeeper and spinners still learning their craft, batsmen struggling to maintain their spots in the side ..... good luck, I think we'll need it.

Cricket Australia deserves this team. Time for them to pull their heads out of their clackers, smell the coffee and start preparing for a better future in Australian cricket.

Absolutely agree.

It's the talking up of someone who's not test standard is either discipline with such enthusiasm because of their desire to play an allrounder that really irks. Do they honestly think anyone buys it?

WE dominated the world with largely, 6 bats, a keeper and 4 bowlers. Sure, we had some of the greatest players to have played during that time, but really it wasn;t until we got reamed by Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes, and allrounder was a blessing not a necessity. Then we found watto, who did ok, but trying to invent one isn't working. Pick your best side, and if a gun allrounder comes along, then great, if not back your best players to do their freaken job

Actually, Henriques may have come of age this year as a batsman, who can do a bit of bowling. His shield scores, for those not really paying attention are:

78 vs WA
161* and 50* Vs Tas
20 Vs Vic
5, 0 vs Qld
71 vs WA

Please write to the selectors. You've got more common sense than all them combined.

I rate Clarke a better bowler than Maxwell, Smith and Doherty. If it wasn't for the back issues it causes him, I'd say he is our all rounder. Smith was on TV last night and was asked about his place in the team. His reply (I kid you not), 'I am in the team mostly for my batting, I think, but I have been working hard on my bowling for the last two weeks'. Firstly, he doesn't seem to know why he is in the side and secondly he thinks working hard on your bowling for a couple of weeks is good enough for test level. I am shocked.

Competitive game going on at the WACA. Going to chase it down well within 10 overs.

No excuse at all for an appalling performance, but why would any touring team agree to start off a series at the WACA (unless you're the Windies circa late 70's through early 90's)

The last time Starc took five for he was 'rotated' for the next game. Wonder if this will happen this time?
