Fair chance India might still be batting.

Fair chance with a second spinner we would have rolled them for 400 odd and it would be game on!

Bet we won't see 3 quicks next test thats for sure.

The 2nd spinner would have to have taken 5-96 to have got them out for less, not sure Doherty has that in him to be honest. We'll probably see next test I'd presume. Going to be interesting if they go with Doherty or Maxwell. Maxwell offers the additional batting option (more a slogging option), Doherty the more experienced spinner.

Personally, I would drop Starc next test and bring in Doherty.......or Maxwell, both aren't that great.

For me it's somewhat in a sleep walking mode. Sometimes it's compelling and sometimes I don't even care to check the scores, especially if it's overseas. It dosen't help that we are probably looking at a 0-5 whitewash against the poms at the next Ashes either.

I think it has to do with the larger than life players dissapearing and being replaced with no names (compared to them at leats anyway).
Yes, well that was said when Bradman retired. And when Miller retired. And again when Harvey & Davidson retired. I remember the same thing when Lillee, Marsh & Chappell decided to call it quits.

It's just part of the waxing & waning of cricket.

We're waning at the moment.

BTW, welcome to the board.

Hogg was amazing. He just used to walk off the ground and his captain didn't even know he was gone. I would have liked to see him pull that crap under Ian Chappell :)

Hoggy had asthma from memory and the overs were 8 balls back then ! A four over burst usually saw him done but at the same time he'd have ripped out a couple of wickets. Ahhh the memories !

Good stuff from Henriques.

Batsman in form makes runs. Who would have thought it??

If the next pitch is anything like this I would drop Starc for Doherty, even though it probably wont help much

Impressive debut from Henriques thus far. His batting has looked really composed considering both times he's come in when we have been in trouble.

Can't ask for much more than what he has done. One of the few guys to guarantee themselves a spot in the next test.

Nathan Lyon got a double ton.

If they dish up another pitch like this, I'd go one quick with Moises doing the part time work and playing 3 spinners.
I like it but one of the three spinners must be smith. No point having three off spinners who are all very similar.

Lyon, Smith and . . .? Doh? Maxwell?

They should of kept that kid from WA - Agar. Is capable of real turn and is more than handy with bat in hand. Time for selectors to keep looking because Lyon is not of international quality. Ashwin & Co hand is turning and jumping like a minefield. Lyon tries hard but is not up to it i am afraid.

The kid came home and bowled combined 31-7-99-4 plus made a match winning 71 no in the second dig. Not a bad effort.

It would have been a lot better than Having lyon, doh and Maxwellhouse all bowling the exact same style.

Lyon actually stacks up quite well against Australian Off Spinners of history. Its just that when we need him to deliver a big game on spin friendly pitches he teds to still deliver only 2-3 wickets. He just doesn't upset batsman's footwork through change of pace or drift so the spin is a lot easier to play.

SO most of the over I saw Starc bowl he was persuing one of, IMHO, the most overrated tactics in Test Cricket - bowling around the wicket.

As a % of his overs, how often did he do this?

Not sure how we bowl them out for 400 odd with 2 spinners when Lyon is considered our No.1 and has been decimiated.

The problem isn't that we need 2 spinners (we probably do). The problem we face is that they play spinners well and ours aren't any good. Likewise, we play spin poorly and they bowl it bloody well. Lyon wouldn't get a game ahead of any of their 3 spinners and yet we think we need to bring a worse spinner than Lyon in to improve us....

Got a theory on Stark bowling around the wicket..... Reckon they didn't want him creating foot marks outside the right handers off stump early in the game. If we had been able to force India into a decent chase in the second dig, he would have been straight back over the wicket.
Might be dreaming, but can't think of any other reason he would have persisted for the entire innings with a tactic that didn't look like getting him a wicket.

Well given they made 572... I don't think the quicks experiment worked do you?

When in Rome, you do as the Romans do.

I think you are absolutely spot on here.

Australian Wickets:-

Pace - 102 overs, 8 wickets
Spin - 63 overs, 4 wickets

The bowling attack failed. Do I think it would have been more successful with Doh rather than Starc/Siddle. No. They would have scored even quicker. In Rome they have exceptional Romans. I'm not disagreeing that 2 spinners wouldn't make sense in the conditions, I'm just arguing that ours are next to useless and I wouldn't pick another just because his role is a spinner - when he is unlikely to cause the Indians any concern at all. Having said that, that's probably what they'll do next test and I hope they prove me wrong.

Mind you, it took a pretty exceptional innings from MS to take the game away. Without his innings there wasn't a lot between the two teams.

At least if we bring in another spinner we can bring in a batsman that can actually play spin . . .
