100% agree HJ. Not convinced on Haddin, but Rogers should be a certainty for the Ashes in my opinion. He's a proven professional, has an outstanding record in England, and knows how to bat for long innings.

My top 7 for the Ashes would be:
Cowan
Rogers
Hughes
Warner
Clarke
Khawaja/Burns
Wade

That to me is a solid batting line up, not a scary line up, but a solid line up. You have two guys that can take the shine off the new ball, one a proven professional, the other the scrapper who has done better than most thought. Hughes is a proven run scorer, and whilst he can be hit and miss at times, he is a proven centruy scorer, much like Rogers. Warner at 4 could be dmaging against a new ball that has lost it's shine, especially if the bowlers are tiring. Clarke, enough said. Khawaja/Burns, best two young talents in the country. Pick one, back them, stick with them. wade at 7, best keeper/batsman

Harris I would definitely have in the squad. Siddle, Pattinson are probalby the Locks in the bowling line up, Lyon is probably probably so it leave Starc, Bird and Harris fighting out for the 3rd seamer position. Love the depth in that line up. I reckon our best attack would be Patto, Bird and Harris, but siddle is going to be hard to toss.

If you throw Stark at 8, has there ever been so many lefties in an international batting order?
I reckon Clarke would go alright batting left handed too

To true. When I was going through it kept realising that they were all lefties........other than Clarke, do we have a decent right handed bat in Australia??

Haddin as VC???? Is that because they think that Clarke may not play all 5 tests with his back playing up. No vision or dare with the squad today. I know Paine has not been in a rich vein but could cover leadership roles better than Haddin and is 8 years his junior. Surely with the Asjes back to back our fisrt priority should be winning at home in front of aussie crowds. Give exposure to some kids FFS. I think Starc and Bird with their height will be factors with the Duke. Mr Magoo has more sight than Inverairity and Co have. Not happy Jan!!!

Haddin should be 3rd in line keeper behind Wade and Paine - simply a back up in case of injuries to both. That being said, he should not be in the squad and not be VC. Talk about a step backwards if it happens.

Surely Bailey as VC is a better move seeing as we need some more 'conventional' batsmen in the team anyway.

What does a cricket VC even do apart from fill in for captain when he is injured?

I wonder with Haddin back in the starting 11, being elevated to VC would have to be a decent pointer towards that eventuality, if we might play Wade as a specialist batsman in England.

Bad Haddin. F*** me.

Yep. Apparently the verdict, not sure if this is in the press or not, was that Wade's keeping, particularly over the Indian series, was sub standard. I suspect the decision is more about leadership and stability though.

I don't think there's any arguments that Wade's keeping isn't top shelf. He needs to get better. I'm not sure I've ever considered Bad's keeping to be much chop either. At least when it comes to batting though, Wade has some intestinal fortitude. Isn't that what we want from our leaders? Since when has Haddin been the man for a crisis? I would have thought Wade may have been in line for the VC considering his fighting qualities and obvious lack of other candidates. Now he's lost his job - at least behind the stumps - to one of the most careless, irresponsible plonks we have.

Even with Wade's keeping queries, I can't understand why we've gone the old prick rather than Paine or one of the other younger keepers.

Simply, i suspect, purely because Haddin has played a shitload of cricket. The experience angle.

I am finding the selections of the current regime baffling to say the least. Although I'm nut surprised about Rogers' inclusion. He might only be a prospect for a couple of years, but he could burn and provide much needed stability at the top of the order.

Will be an interesting series. Obviously not expecting to win but I'd like to see some improvement in our ability to build some decent scores and to bat long when we just need to tough out a draw. The bowling will perform admirably and might even give us a small chance of a victory somewhere along the lines.

I heard that Cummins started bowling again recently too.

I've got no problem with giving Rogers a go. I'm all for anyone who isn't a T20 superstar. You know, someone who knows how to bat proper and stuff....

I like the Rogers selection as I think he has earnt his second chance, however I think he has to play as an opener in the side from the First test. Otherwise, it's no point picking him and you pick a Burns to travel and get experience with the side. He has to play, he's in form, a proven FC player, a proven player in England. Rogers has to play.

I actually don't mind the squad overall, but I still think it shows that they don't have a real idea where we are going and what our best side is, and that worries me.

I hate the fact Haddin has been picked in the test side purely as we lacked other leaders and needed a VC. That to me is a cop out from the selectors. In regards to Haddin replacing Wade, I'm not convinced its the right way forward, as longer term I think Wade is probably the one, but you can't argue with Haddin's form. I just wonder what the side would be had Watson not stood aside.

Only 1 spinner?? Strange. England have 1 gun spinner, one handy spinner, we now only have one handy spinner. Nothing stopping them from preparing spinning wickets now and rendering our seamers not quite useless, but less damaging.

I reckon Steve Smith is stiff not to be part of the main squad. I was impressed in the way he applied himself.

I wonder what grounds there are for upgrading someone from the A squad to the main Ashes squad.

I'm amazed that Burns didn't get a berth for Australia A.

Maybe they forgot how to spell it.

I thought exactly the same thing.

Then I remembered the series in 1977 when Richie Robinson had to open the batting because we were so poor.

So, if Wade is being played as a specialist batsman, it's a fair bet we are being trounced.

We've picked someone with decent County experience. It worked well for blokes like Hussey, Langer, Bevan, Katich et al.

Really?? Then that is a disgrace. Arguably the best young bat in the country and they don;t take him a long. how are these guys supposed to learn if they don't get the chances??
