I fell asleep after watching 3 maidens to open England's bowling, and Watson stagger to about 8 runs in 5 overs.

..I should've stayed asleep. WTF

Well, there we have it. Yet another insipid display by the Australian "batsmen". I use the term batsmen lightly because none of them, apart from Clarke, would bat in the top 8 for past Australian teams. So much for Boof reading the riot act to them, it's had no effect whatsoever.

Time for Australian Cricket to bit the bullet. It is long overdue for us to stop treating cricket purely as a source of income, and start educating cricketers how to play the game. These players are paid like millionaires and are playing like millionaires.

Back to basics. We need far less truncated forms of the game and greater emphasis on the Sheffield Shield competition. Batsman need to learn how to occupy the crease, pick the right ball to play, or not to play, and make bowlers bowl to THEM, not the other way around.

This will never happen because of the need for administrators to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, that's all that ever seems to matter these days.

England are now doing to us what we used to do to them. Their county system was letting them down badly by turning out mediocre Test players. Eventually they got sick of it, and started placing emphasis on Test matches, especially against Australia. Unless we change focus and attitude, we will continue to suffer humiliation in Ashes battles. England simply want to win more than we do.

We cannot just sit back and wait for another Lillee, Gilchrist, Ponting or Warne, we have to make it happen. Remember how we used to laugh at the Poms? They're laughing at us now.

I recall those English teams of the 90's that were filled with retreads and county journeymen getting a cap on the basis of a three month Sunday League purple patch; we're replicating the model now.

Batting is the problem. Pure and simple. We have the best depth of pace bowling pretty much anywhere. I'd back Jackson Bird against guys like Steve Finn and Tim Bresnan any day.

A number of the batsmen in the squad have lived in the shadows of the their superiors for a number of years. I think Chris Rogers is a tremendous cricketer, but to have him get his second and third games at the age of 35 doesn't do him justice. His reflexes have slowed just enough to make him a marginal prospect at this level. I fear we will say the same about Adam Voges.

As to the source of income, well in this environment no one is carrying cricket anymore. The Big Bash and other such abominations allow CA to at least have a stab at paying its way and funding its administrative and contract structure.

They had the luck to grow up watching Hayden, Ponting, Gilly just counter punch and dominate and think there is no other way. As much as that was great for us viewers, these batsmen don't have the necessary skill to be able to bat like that. About time they studied their Border and Steve Waugh tapes to learn how to graft an innings. They might be amazed at how much easier batting becomes, and how freely the runs flow, on the back of spending a lot of time at the crease and churning out a few big scores.

It's lucky we have deep bowling stocks. Having our batsman give the bowlers 53 overs recovery is a great way to screw up careers. Harris must be thrilled

This sums up Watson perfectly

http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013/content/story/653135.html

Watson's a myth as he never learns
Shane Watson's innings was so predictable as to be sad; flattering to deceive then an lbw that was nothing but out yet he still reviewed it

Shane Watson's ESPNcricinfo profile is smiling at me. It shouldn't be. It should be looking sheepish. It should be apologising. It should be trying to show me that he's changed, that he's learnt and that in the future things will get better.

Really? You've got one of Al Pacino's finest roles to look forward to. Cool movie. "Say hello to my little friend..."
