When Watson moved to Tassie, he had a permanent daily session with the bowling machine. He'd bat for an hour, playing the same shot hundreds (thousands?) of times. Always on artificial wickets (perfect bounce, no swing/seam or pace variation). It shows.

What a great day for the boys though. Solid opening stand and a great finish. Despite all that I'm actually still livid at the Khawaja decision though. Here's a bloke battling to get a look into the side and he has to put up with this.
 
Warne and Botham carried on like pork-chops for far too long after the Kawaja shocker, had to turn the sound off. And yes, that pitch is spinning far too much for a day 1 pitch that is supposed to favour pace. Watson should be sent off to play with Aust A for a while, he sure has lost his mojo.

I was happy for Warne to keep reminding them that it was a shocker. I'm glad CA have asked for an explanation because that decision seriously requires an inquiry. It is literally impossible for any sane human being to have watched that footage and come to the conclusion that Khawaja was out. Assuming that the 3rd umpire is a sane human being then there have to be agendas at play for that to have been upheld...........
 
Byron Coverdale sums it up really well, particularly the last line.

More importantly, while the DRS might not be broken, its implementation is breaking the spirits of players and fans. Without the DRS, Khawaja would still have been out, caught Prior bowled Swann. Everyone would have accepted it as an on-field mistake, one of those errors that umpires have made for 135 years. But getting it wrong with the assistance of replays cannot be tolerated.

Fact is what we saw was a double howler - the onfield umpire got it wrong, then the bloke with all the technology at his fingertips inexplicably got it wrong.

I can accept field umpires make mistakes, and that the silly 'umpires call' skews things a bit, but I can't accept and umpire getting it so wrong with the all assistance and time he had at his disposal.

Exactly right. All the DRS has done is draw more attention to bad decisions and make them less acceptable than before DRS was introduced.

Langers, just watching Smith bat closely and I know he's set but he looks like a much more correct batsman now. You'd be a better judge than me of this but the way he's playing the seamers, his technique, looks much tighter. Impressed with him.

Just watching him now too. I reckon his defense has always been pretty solid. It's his stroke play that's become more orthodox. Playing through the ball more and uses the crease better, whereas I felt in his early days was inclined to plant the front foot and slog relying on a good eye. Showing a good temperament too.

Yeah, didn't need that. Was thinking those two through to lunch and 400 odd would have set up the lower order nicely. Will want in excess of 500.... Pressure on Warner

England bowled well but. Dried Smith up to an extent. Slightly rash shot, lifted his head... that's what happens, I guess.

Clarke is amazing.

What are everyone's thoughts about Cooks captaincy? I think he is fairly unimaginative to be honest.
Doesn't try too many new ideas, especially with his field placings

Uninspired for mine. Got a really good side to shift around there too.
 
It's a pity Warne could never be a company man off the field because every time you hear him talk, you just know he would have been an imaginative, proactive and entertaining captain on field.
