Watson just keeps finding dumb ways to go out. And Bailey.... less said of that the better.

I'd love us to wrap the Ashes up in Perth then blood a young batsman. I just cannot see Bailey and Watson being part of the future of the team.

Bring in Burns/Hughes. Have to be better, and for the future, than either of Watson or Bailey.

Totally agree, perhaps even a young fast bowler giving Harris or siddle a spell? Unfortunately most of our young pace man are injured, but coulter Nile could perhaps be worth a look at, or we play another spinner in Sydney?

Smith has come a long way as a batsman. Should be able to slot in at five and just watch him mature now.

But if Watson is your number 3 and Bailey your 6, then your batting is going to get found out more often than not.

Shane Watson is a very good Shield cricketer.

According to Fox Sports News, Johnson has more runs in the series than any of the English touring party..... Oh how the mighty have fallen

Of himself.

What do you guys think about Bailey occupying a place in the test side too?
I think so, but made some valuable runs last game. I'd give him a bit more of a chance... Winning side and all that. Wouldn't want to play too many more get out shots like today, particularly given the situation at the time.

I've seen him bat a bit at first class level. Seems quite limited. Bit like Cowan for me in terms of ability and 'claim' to be in the side as a batsman.

Yes, agree he needs more of a chance but can't see him becoming a test class batsman - you know what I mean. Watson has to go you'd think.

I think he'd make runs against the lesser lights but is ultimately just out of his depth.

CA can afford to be a little brave and put a player in to develop. Shane Watson is 32 and has 3 centuries.

Oh yes.

Was at a media lunch this week and got talking to a sports journo - known him for a bit, writes cricket... well - and he had a few things to say about the previous Ashes series and this one.

Thought Australia weren't that far off in England. Few things didn;t go our way etc.

But he thought we'd opened some cracks in the technique and belief of Trott. And did some damage to Cook as well.

Says while Broad and Anderson are both good bowlers, neither are exactly the sort of bowlers that will tear another team apart in Australia.

And he thinks Warner and Smith have both progressed massively during the two series.

Kind of nothing you didn't know, just interesting to hear it all together.

Yes he does seem limited. Appears a bit awkward in technique at times... can't quite put my finger on it. Almost like he's forcing the ball against the flow. Difference between him an Cowan is that he can hit it off the square in front of the wicket, which makes him a better proposition.

That's one century less than Brad Haddin. At a slightly worse average too.

Says it all really from our number 3.

Bailey isn't a great driver of the ball. Also quite limited in his shot making too.

Yeah, just isn't fluent or something.

I don't think either Cowan or Bailey are test propositions to be honest. But I place them on about the same level.

Check out the first catch on this clip. Amazing.

I love the look of disbelief on his face. "Did I really just catch that??"
Fair catch!

The most disappointing thing about Watson's dismissal is that he appeared to completely disregard the length of the ball that Broad served up to him. He saw a wide delivery & had a flash at it - as if he had predetermined that anything wide would be easy fodder.

Compare that to Smith's innings where he's really known where his off stump is & waited for the balls to drift onto his pads before he picks off the runs. I was really impressed with the discipline that Smith showed. I think that his century will stand him in good stead with the selectors for some time.

Same number as Phil Hughes.

Over 2012 and 13, Watson's average is 31. In the he has the 176 he made at The Oval which is nearly 20% if his run total for the period. Take that out he averages 26.

He has only passed 50 three times in two years.

Greg Baum summed him up perfectly this morning....

"Not so Watson. Yet again, he batted to deceive. Yet again, he drove at ball not full enough for the shot, and was caught in slips. Except for the century he made against an experimental England attack in the last, dead rubber at The Oval in August, Watson has averaged 20 against England this year. It is time to revise the standard thesis that he has underperformed, and conclude instead that he, too, is an optical illusion."
