Muirhead... Want to see how he bowls when he has to bowl 15-20 overs in an innings, but is the best spin prospect I've seen in Australian ranks since Stu and Shane. The rest are pale in comparison.

Since 2004 we've exposed 11 spin bowlers
Nathan Hauritz (17 Tests, 63 wickets @ 34.98)
Michael Beer (2 Tests, 3 Wickets @ 59.33) *And was once smacked out of the park by djboonie in the VTCA
Nathan Lyon (30 Tests, 104 Wickets @ 32.52)
Glenn Maxwell (2 Tests, 7 Wickets @ 27.57) All-Rounder played as spinner
Ashton Agar (2 Tests, 2 Wickets @ 124)

For all the talk of how well Lyon is going.. its surprisingly how close horrible is behind him.

* Played in Boonie's backyard

Ah, nice. Predictably Watson breaks down with some niggle on the eve of the test. Then, bizarrely, an SOS is sent to Sean marsh to high-tail it across to Joh-burg. Almost Hilditch-esq this whole thing.

They really must see something in Doolan to have him pencilled in for three. His record is less than convincing.

I know someone who played club cricket in Tasmania. Said that Doolan had all the talent in the world, but was never switched on or motivated enough until the last couple of years. Be interesting to see if they can 'transform the lad'.

Can't see it myself that he'll end up as a test number 3.

Barry Richards just said on radio that the loss of Kallis is the same as losing both Dravid & Zaheer Khan in terms of runs & wickets.

That really puts things in perspective.

Oh yes, Warner out, played on, bowled by Steyn. 1/15

And rogers out. This could be a long tour

Peterson must be happy that Clarke isn't in.

I think Clarke would be looking forward to bat against him.
Let's hope so. As usual we need a ton from Clarke

You just did that.

You know the rule - it has to happen in the next couple of minutes after you say "Gee, xxxxxxxx's batting well".

Are you watching? I'm still at work wading through crap...

what does the pitch and the like look like?

What sort of score do we need? Realistically not optimistically.

The pitch is not a minefield. There isn't a lot of carry through to the slips.

To be honest, it was a good toss for us to lose.

300+ would be what I think is a good first innings score. Rogers was picked off by the bounce that Morkel produces, but there are no real issues. Intellegent batting (ie thinking our way through the situation) should get us a reasonable score.

The pitch is only going to get worse is the popular commentators opinion. We'd be happy with only losing 3 wickets in the first session. The Saffers over rate is pretty ordinary. Peterson is only there to get the over rate up in my opinion.

Pitch is up and down. Can't see it getting easier to bat on. The commentators are saying it'll quicken up days 2&3. 300 would be a good score. 350 would be nice.

Cheers, L. What do you make of the decision to bat?

They put us in.

Sorry, I meant South Africa's decision to send us in to bat.

Generally the team batting first prospers in SA.

Hence me asking etc.

They've bowled well and with a new 3 & 4 bat, I can see the logic.

Outfield is a bit slow too. Forecast is good so you'd think it'll quicken up and runs might come quicker

I can see the logic too with hoping to smash us our seemingly brittle battle at the very start of the test series. Would give them a huge mental advantage going forward. Conversely, if we can eke out a decent score and bowl well, it could backfire big time.
