I can see the logic too with hoping to smash us our seemingly brittle battle at the very start of the test series. Would give them a huge mental advantage going forward. Conversely, if we can eke out a decent score and bowl well, it could backfire big time.

Doolan was stiff.... Really nice pull shot, just hit it straight to the fielder. If we'd gone to lunch 2 down after being 2 for nothing, we'd have won the first battle

Innings one was true to form then.

I started watching when he was 18 off about 25. Battled hard through about half a dozen overs without scoring... Got through and seemed to be pushing forward again when he fell

Been watching online, but listening to the ABC commentary. The South Africans doing special comments (one of them being Barry Richards) aren't very impressed with Smith's decision.

Good decision by Smith. Use the pitch and get aussies (who have had no time to acclimatize) in on relatively dicey wicket with variable bounce. They have the v best pace attack in the World by a fair way.

They bat with class all the way to De Villiers.

The more Smith plays the more I like him. He seems to play with pride for the Baggy Green and Australia, as opposed to his own ego as I have become more accustomed to these days.

Very pleased to wake up and see we didn't lose another wicket. Great stuff by Smith and Marsh.

An obvious observation but Smith is developing into a very fine batsman.

When were 3/- at lunch and marsh at the crease. I had my doubts we would bat out the day. I don't know what bizarreo logic they used to pick marsh but what a masterstroke! And yes, smith has been close to our best batsman since getting back in. Looks like the ashes will be the making of our next star. Get another one or two like him and our batting looks good again.

I suspect, as Boonie paid credit to earlier, Boof has a lot to do with things.

He seems to understand cricketers, instilling confidence in themselves seems to be something he's very good at.

Boof is some magician! Marsh has averaged about 25 in the sheild since being dropped yet pulls out a big ton first up on foreign soil against the world's best bowlers. Wow! The problem he seemed to have was one of concentration as much as anything. Maybe he just needs a good batting partner to keep him on the ball..Hughes must be spewing though...

If you remember - in 1992 Tendulkar ripped centuries off the Australian attack in Sydney & Perth. He was rightly feted for his performances.

Smith has done the same, albeit against an inferior attack, but at times when his team was 3/106 & 3/78.

His shot selection at the moment is exceptional. He is the young hope of the side.

Only when I'm severely "under the weather". Too many sports I have no experience of, let alone the disciplines involved in being a champion.

It's fun to watch, but so is Russell Howard.

It's like watching children's tv for me - coilourful, full of smiles and bold knits, but otherwise lacking any real engagement.
