No6 needs to be a batsman first. Marsh isn't up to it currently. 4 bowlers plus a some overs from Smith/Voges/Warner should see us through. That 5th bowler needs to be viewed as a holding pattern with potential for a cheap wicket or two until we have a viable option. Neville clearly the best keeper in the country and good for 20-40 runs,..... should not have pressure applied to his spot. Need to give some batting depth. I'm a huge Maddinson fan... get him in there!!

Yeah, I like the look of Maddinson too. And I agree with you re the general tenor of number 6 - they're a batsman first and foremost.

Thinking about Maddinson, I remember the days when you'd blood a batsman at 6. Give them the opportunity to learn from the other blokes, come in when the attack had been blunted etc.

Is he good enough with the ball when compared to a Bird/Mennie/Siddle?

I could stretch to seeing him at #7, (Nevill at #8), but only if the incoming #6 can bowl (ie Maxwell).

If the incoming player is then a compromise - then is it worth it?

Losing it at the selection table. The bowlers they took to SA were hopelessly outclassed, and now they are giving them another shot. Mennie, Worrall, Boland - not international standard.

If it the case that all the best are injured, then we should be doing more to ensure they stay fit. Two years ago the fast bowling stocks looked great - Starc, Cummings, Hazlewood, Pattinson. Siddle couldn't get a game. Now Siddle (Starc aside) is considered a key member of the team.

Something surly has to give now. Of the names you've listed, I don't think Head, Maxwell or Wade are test cricketers. I actually don't get the love for Travis Head. I've seen him hit some big sixes and bowl some darts in T20. I don't think he's the answer to our middle order woes.

Yeah just looking at the guys who are keepers in FC. Head is part of a really poor next tier... Handscombe doesn't pull the gloves on anymore due to Wade being there... We don't have any decent keepers anymore

Maxwell could be a test batsmen. He can bat for a long time when required, and if you forget all the T20 and ODI stuff has a relatively good technique.

I think Neville has to stay simply because he's the best keeper in the country. He's a more than adequate No8 at test level. If he has some decent "batsman" around him, he's more than capable of holding up an end and contributing some decent lower order runs. His problem is that the failures around him are putting unrealistic expectations on his position and ability. Pretty tough to pull up a slide from no7 when the bowlers have just humiliated the top 6.

I don't disagree with you regarding Maxwell's technique. I just don't think he can bat for a long time when required. He just can't control his need for the unorthodox at the most inopportune moments.

I agree with you. I have always mainatined that Burns has such obvious flaws, especially that half bat wave outside of the off side. He's not a test opener in my book.

Whiteman would be the next keeper off the rank. He's a real batting talent, but had some injuries over the last year and a bit. Good kepper too.

Whiteman will be our next keeper. Nah, Bancroft won't keep. And Wade is not up to it at test level in my opinion.

I think if he hadn't of been injured, then Hazlet from Queensland could have been bolter for a middle order spot. Really good talent.

And yes, I think Lehmann would also be close. Talented batsman, but late bloomer with not much cricket behind him.

Completely agree with the summation of those fast bowlers. I hadn't seen Mennie before this test and didn't see much. Just runs in, puts the ball on a length, doesn't do much with it or ask questions.

I really hope Cummins comes good. Looked like a once in generation talent to me. He's significantly more bulked up than previously from what I've seen of late.

Agree with you on Burns. State runs just don't translate. Second time he's been found out with abject failures at test level if my memory serves me.

Did anyone catch the kid who England played vs India? Opening bat, 19,. Real talent, could be anything. One of the guys at my sons club plays for this kids county side. Said he'll be the best batsman in England within 2 years.

He really looks the goods. He has a lovely back foot game where he can play straight. But has all the shots. Been playing against men in Newcastle since he was 14 too.

Yep burns is a middle order batsman. best results for qld were at four.

What I don't like about the selectors is that they gift spots to some and chop and change with others. If they actually think burns can be an opener then play him there every test ahead of marsh at very least. Get him a coach that can teach him that technique. Don't pick him based on the vibe and then go back to the failure that is marsh.

They need to sack langer as batting coach if he is still there. His was not a technique you would want to teach to anyone. Get Chris rogers in the role.

I'd get rid of Voges and pick from a bunch of young talented players of which we have plenty before they ruin there technique and temperament trying to play 20-20 cricket.

We won games or we lost games. I spoke with [Ravindra] Jadeja out there that it was an opportunity for both of us to improve on another aspect of the game.

"Maybe in Test cricket in the future, we will have this situation again. Maybe we will have to apply ourselves again and show character, so have the intent to get runs in between but play percentage cricket, figure out areas where you want to take ones or hit boundaries, but at the same time, be sure of your defense as well. So, it was a challenging situation but one that we countered really well, I thought."
