Re: Port Adelaide's Crowd Worry

True. norf's crowds at home this year have been terrible. If it wasn't for Carlton they would've had another small crowd.

Our crowds have been shit this year but we have largely played interstate teams at home or other clubs without a massive supporter base like Melbourne and Bulldogs.

With 10 teams in Victoria clubs here have for a long time relied a lot on local games between eachother, that is going to become harder and harder to achieve for everyone, especially with more interstate teams coming in.

I think our support level will improve dramatically, especially as the team matures but I still think long-term we need a 30k stadium in Melbourne that will get a great financial result at around the 20k crowd mark and we know that is possible.

Re: Port Adelaide's Crowd Worry

We were losing money too when we were getting crowds as small as yours.

It's not just the magical stadium deal making us rich, it's the fact we've almost doubled our crowds since we entered the comp. The stadium deal wasn't doing shit for us when we were drawing 19,000 to games - we were paying millions in rent and getting nothing back.

We also pay a lot more for tickets in Perth - Budget seats cost over $40 for an adult now. Premium seats (which are over half the ground) are about $60 I think.

And our stadium deal is shit. Over $3 million in year rent for a dump. The difference is we get a virtually clean stadium - if Port got the same deal, then they'd need to make over $3 million in extra revenue just to break even. And it certainly wouldn't be the difference between a $4 million loss and turning a profit. The Crows might have a case given they fill the ground and would probably be able to sell all the space they currently forego to the SANFL, but Port would just get a heap of more empty seats that they can't sell.

I just can't work out why SANFL membership still exists though. If you want to watch the Crows and Power, become a member of both bloody clubs.

Port's saving grace will be playing their games at Adelaide Oval.

As soon as they can get away from Football Park and to the Adelaide Oval the better, as it will open up an opportunity for the casual football observer to easily get to a game on Friday or Saturday night and boost their revenue from walk up paying customers.

DST

No it won't. Playing at AO one friday night a year is a) not going to get 10,000 extra people to their games, neutral or otherwise and b) they don't play enough games in that timeslot for it to make that big of a difference.

They have to do what Freo did, increase their crowds across all games. In the first 6 years of Freo's existence they couldn't average more than 23K, now they average consistently over 35K. Which is when they started making money off of their deal, which is what Port and the Crows want, a deal similar to Subiaco. Port at Subi make no money, its that simple.

Fremantle had to work bloody hard to get their deal to work for them, and they have no on field success. Port are 5 completed seasons from a Premiership and 2 from a grand final appearance and the issue is solely about moving location?

Re: Port Adelaide's Crowd Worry

The difference is that Crows games are sold out, Season ticket holders who don't show up is another discussion. We still have a season ticket waiting list, and why, because their are tens of thousands more Crows supporters to draw on, and more keep coming through the generations. That isn't slowing down.

Port is a dying area with soon to be no real recollection of their past as Centrals wipe out their records. What happens in 40 years time when no one remembers a Port SANFL flag?

You can all crap on about your 'passion' til the cows come home, but it isn't winning you games, it isn't making you money and it isn't magically drawing 15,000 more supporters to the game. Lets not fool ourselves, if Freo (with their wonderous stadium deal) were getting 16,000 - 20,000 people to their games they's not be raking in money either. Port (and their fans) need to realise what the AFL is.

but again I ask, where has the supa doopa-ness of the crows and eagles state based formula got them in winning games this year also, and you people look like making a loss also. Its complete rubbish when you people bag us. As much as you want it, we will never die. Our passion got us into the AFL on our own, so stick that where you want to. We didnt abandon our local club and then hold hands with Norwood, Glenelg and Sturt supporters just to have an AFL team to support. I dont care if we dont have crowds like the crows (even though just over 30,00 is not exactly making us jealous). We are still making money for the SANFL at the end of the day.
We are shit atm, but all clubs go through stages like this. I remember the SOS for St Kilda years ago, Geelong were a financial basketcase a few years ago too.
One thing for certain, we (or the crows for that matter) will not attract any neutral fans to our games if we play at that 1970s car based shithole way out in the western suburbs. Come on Adelaide Oval. And also, some heart from our players would be nice too, maybe a new coach also

Along with 70's car based shithole comes a 70's style of thought, Geelong and St Kilda have moved on from their 'our passion will get us through' mentality and started looking at the AFL for what it is - a billion dollar business.

Its not about winning games, its about being sustainable. 5 years ago you won a flag, 2 years ago you were in a GF. You are now $4M in the hole, you have sponsorship problems, you have merchandising problems, you have to close half the gates on game day to save on staffing costs, you cover a 3rd of the bays to detract from the size of your crowd.

What happens when you have a period of no success, when you are 15 years from your last GF appearance? Port will not be able to rely on the 'oh well we won all those SANFL flags, that will keep us a live' way of thinking.

Port are not going through a 'bad' period, you played in the 2007 grand final, you have no idea what bad is yet. Wait and see what 10 more years of your players playing like they do now and Choco's replacement being not much better look like.

Your crowds have been shit because they have been signficantly below what they have been in the past six years.

Excellent crowd friday night NM v Carlton. Second highest for the weekend so far.

Surely the PH will attract 70k+ tomorrow.

15,109 for the only game in Melbourne today...

The AFL would be ultra disappointed with these figures, especially with the recent revelations of North supporters who have kindly purchased two memberships to keep their club above water and swiping through both cards to boost diabolical attendances. We will probably never know the real crowd.

I love the innovation of closing the 3rd level of Etihad though to ensure it does look like there is a semi-decent crowd for the TV cameras though. What a novel idea. I've thankfully never had to experience this with my own club but well done to North and the staff at Etihad for trying. A small tip for the broadcasters though to avoid all wide shots of the ground in this instance, if possible. It kind of gives the fraud away.

On par with the AAMI Stadium 'banner' look when Port play home games.

bottom level holds 15,000 does it not. it was basically full, plus level 2 = 15,000 comfortably. nice try. pathetic.

North V Port par for the course as was WCE and the Lions.

Hawks V Essendon pretty much as expected with both mid ladder.

Carlton will be a little concerned at twice falling below 30,000 V interstaters while in the top 8.

"official crowd" Is just spin - how many real people were there .Its like the old days at the MCG when everyone in the ground was counted as the "attendence" I suspect North and the AFL are doing the same again.

In any case a disgracefull crowd on a Sunday with no other games on in Melbourne. So how far the North brand has slipped? Looks like the sympathy vote of a couple of years back has worn off.I wonder how much money was lost with a crowd like that by the club and stadium management?

I reckon North will have their hand out to the AFL again soon. North = the new Fitzroy.
