Re: What's the story with Hawthorn?

I agree.

But if North has to cop this shit on the main board, so does everyone.

Scorched earth yo.

One huge difference ... Hawthorn are travelling beautifully off the ground, your club is a basket case.

And I'm wondering when people will ever realise Hawthorn have engendered a huge interstate membership base, a lot of whom couldn't attend the games.

I also wonder when people will ever realise in this da and age of TV rights and contracts that attendances really don't matter. So long as you get enough to pay the costs, that's a good day.

Re: 21K at the MCG today??

Okay I will bite! (and seeings as there is two different threads on the same silly subject, I will copy my post from the other one)

Terrible conditions (at least before the game) and 21k is a fair crowd. Just checking back, the pies (absolute most dominate draws of crowds in the league) drew 34k against Port at the G (also notice that Bombers only had 29k at their game under the roof this year as well). I personally attempt to go to every game I can, but it seems to me that others like to go with their mates and if their mates teams aren't playing, they don't go (IMHO)!

I can honestly say I thought that we would be lucky to get 15k. 21k is okay, especially if you think that only 5k more went to see the Dees play the Roos in a stadium that was always going to have perfect conditions!

Re: 21K at the MCG today??

Discussing crowd numbers is important.
The Zebra and SweetLeftFoot have slowly slipped from good posters down to cantankerous old Trolls in the space of three seasons.

Both of their contributions the last couple of months have been pathetic and reflect more on their declining mental status than the topic of their discussions.

It really is sad to see two stalwarts of BF struggle to have any relevancy when serious items are being discussed. Probably more embarrassing than 2010 n00bs these days with how they approach the internet.

RIP North Board. Sad days indeed.

The most damning thing against them is many times have they cried foul about using the Main Board instead of Bay 13 when North get attacked. However they propagate this trolling most often and regularly.

SLF & Zebra are the biggest hypocrites on BF.

Re: 21K at the MCG today??

North home games this year.
Round 3 v West Coast - 18,394
Round 4 v Sydney - 23,646
Round 6 v Melbourne - 26,763
Round 8 v Adelaide - 16,479
Round 9 v Bulldogs - 30,794
Round 11 v Brisbane - 19,100

Average - 22,529
Also, all North home games so far have been Saturday afternoon or night, which are usually much more crowd friendly times, also being at Etihad weather has a much lower impact. Only cracked 30,00 once, and only cracked 20 against sides with a decent Victorian following.

So our Sunday game in fairly poo weather (although ended up better than I thought it wold be) was only just below North's average.

All that said, poor turn out, we should do better. Most of our 43,000 Victorian based members should be turning up, so a crowd of 30,00 is what we should be getting.

Re: 21K at the MCG today??

These threads and posts from North supporters actually have nothing to do with Hawthorn. It could have been any club playing over the weekend that attracted a disappointing crowd. 40K under cover for two flag contenders yesterday afternoon, when Collingwood usually supplies at least 40K on its own? It happens, it's easy and it's dumb.

The sole point is that this (and other similarly low crowd figures) for other games receive little if no comment from the media, when the lazy sods file a note on our crowd every week before they even start thinking about talking about the game. Same for BF trolls. Like with the umpiring Saturday night, all we are looking for is consistency.

Re: What's the story with Hawthorn?

OP, you should only be surprised if you believe Hawthorn actually has 50,000 members.

Hawthorn are pretty notorious for:

- 2 for 1 memberships
- Pet memberships
- Infant memberships

I'd be surprised if they had more than 30,000 ACTUAL members.

Think you're confusing us with your own Club or Essendon for that matter.

Great comeback.

Essendon WERE the kings of the 2 for 1. Pretty sure they stopped that garbage though.

But Collingwood? Good luck. We have the most AFL members which is a pretty decent measure for how many real members you have.

You guys flaunt your pets and infant members on the news, I'd say it's pretty good indicator of how many legit members you have.

The next few years will see an increasing and across the competition disconnection between membership numbers and attendance figures. The increasing reliance by all ( certainly most ) clubs on 3 and 5 game cut price "mini memberships" in raising revenue and membership numbers means that by definition many thousands of members of ALL clubs won't be attending inter staters and other less high profile games unless a team is going well.

The reason why there is a bigger disconnect in Hawks attendances is simply that they have been most aggressive and creative is boosting numbers of "mini memberships". As others follow suit and as membership numbers consequently soar we will see huge gaps between official membership totals and attendances at all clubs.

Good read at the Age about this very topic. You'll find this section pertinent to your club:

Within football there are whispers about some clubs offering memberships to sponsors in contra deals that beef up membership figures artificially. Collingwood is the example given most frequently, with representatives of three clubs suggesting the Magpies had given away significant numbers of three-game memberships to Westpac staff as part of a new naming rights sponsorship for their Swan Street training base.
''It's pretty shameless the way they've done it,'' one club official said. ''I'd be surprised if they are the only ones but the scale of it is impressive.'' A top man from another club agreed: "It's not unusual. A lot of clubs are doing it and the benefits are obvious," he said. ''We don't run around like some clubs handing out a thousand memberships to sponsors here and there."
Collingwood admitted to The Age that memberships were included in the Westpac deal but would not say how many.
''We won't divulge confidential agreements with sponsors other than to say that Collingwood has always included memberships in its sponsorship and corporate packages,'' a spokesman said. The club emphatically denied that memberships were ''given away'' but admitted that some were part of contra deals.

full read here, all clubs do it... big differences between the counted audited memberships and the "bragging rights" memberships though

Re: What's the story with Hawthorn?

No wonder why most people who know anything about football or have a valid opinion think this site is a joke.

It's because of douchebags posting this kind of rubbish on the main board. BF has gone downhill rapidly in the last 6 months. I wonder where the mods are?

Re: 21K at the MCG today??

I went to the Hawks vs Port game today.

Love going to the G on a nice, crisp day in early June and looked like an alright matchup on paper.

But I couldn't believe the crowd. They say there was 21K but it looked more like 18K to me. The atmosphere was terrible, certainly not pumping like the Roos vs Lions game last night that had a couple of thousand less people.

Plus, there was a surprisingly good Port presence. They were loud when Port made their run. I reckon it was 70% Hawks at most (generous).

Don't the Hawks have 50K members? Why are they onlygetting about 15K to their games when you take out Port and neutrals?

I would think Pies and Doggies would be shitty about that - considering both games they play each other this year is at Etihad and to find out that there is onyl around 21K at the MCG - the same day they played. It is pretty crappy if only 15K members turned up out of 50K. However these days with 3 game memberships and interstate memebrships (with every team) who knows how many members are the true members and attend the games.

Saw some pretty crappy numbers at Rich v Saints. The Saints cheersquad looked about as big as Richmonds cheersquad and when they farewelled there player there was more Saints fans there cheering him off then there own.

Maybe overall bad numbers for the weekend?

I challenge you to prove any of the above.

Could you also please explain the Collingwood 3 game membership pack?

As I said above everyone or more or less everyone is at the "mini membership" thing now. We will see membership numbers soar but it will have little impact on attendance at smaller games.

EG the Tiger Insider ( by far the largest non audited figure in the game ) is on the way out and is being turned into 3 game memberships. The AFL audited Richmond membership will jump by many thousands but Richmond will have as many fans as before. Like Collingwood now Richmond are on the numbers boosting bandwagon prototyped by Hawks.

50,000 memberships will be commonplace in 2 to 3 years. 50,000 attendances won't.

I think you're missing the point of the thread mate.

Go the search function, substitute the word 'Hawthorn' for 'North' and you'll see a unimaginative, poorly thought out OP of that thread that inspired this one.

Your opinion is basically the same viewpoint of most sensible posters on that particular thread.
