I can see McCulloch and Proud being taken in the rookie draft. They both need to get their bodies right and the club don't want to take any chances with them on the main list.

It would explain why they delisted Yoshi after one year.

I should have prefaced what I said with the fact that we tend to get things right in terms of our delistings.

A fair majority of supporters are baffled by some we let go each year and time and time again opposition teams pick up Brisbane discards. However, as we have seen, time and time again they don't work out. Just look at the last couple of years - Begley, Corrie, Harding, Hooper, JMac etc to name a few.

Our list is just horribly inbalanced at the moment and by the time we ride out the WS poaching raid, our older stars would have retired. Fortunately, a lot of our "depth dregs" are coming off contract next year and we can have a solid purge without having to pay them out. Additionally, with our list on paper we should not be anywhere near the cap limit and we should even be able to pay out those who are contracted and having no impact in our side next season.

Whatever we do from here on in for the next 4-5 years, we must have a clear plan and focus. No more backended contracts, no more paying overs for interstaters, no more mid-older aged players or former stars as depth, no more loading up on the one position (i.e. half-back flankers) etc.

Its very rare for any of our delistings to go on to have a good career with another club. The club has very rarely got it wrong.

FWIW, I also fear Warwick is spot on. We won't progress as long as our side includes Charman, Stiller, Raines, Buchanan, Sheldon and can I add Hawksley to that lot. That's quite a proportion of our total ranks, and also means we have way too little pressure from below for top grade places. Again, a familiar position for us. Collier and Austin are marginal.

These blokes are simply not up to the full-court press game now being used by the top teams.

I also agree that we are once again in the all-too familiar position of being terribly vulnerable with our ruck stocks- we only need one or both of Charman or Leuenberger to go down and once again we are really struggling. I know, the name Clark will immediately spring to mind for some- long term, I'm assuming he won't be here, maybe as soon as 2012. Incidentally, Charman will be 30 in 2012. Where will we be then?

Maybe there is a Plan B here- I sincerely hope so.

Lost: Hooper, Harding, Macdonald, Bradshaw, Dalziel, Henderson, Roe, King, Notting, Clousten
Gained: Staker, Fev, Buchanon, Raines, X Clarke

Before 2011 season (so far):
Lost: Brennan, Rischitelli, Sherman, Johnstone, Proud, McCulloch
Gained: Bewick, Beams (with picks to come)

As for our list management being on the right track if that means 'go youth, no players over 22' then I guess we are. We still need to draft really well for it to look any better. I'm pleased about Beams, but we have lost a lot of quality (or potential quality) this year.

Our list is going to look fantastic if Rich, Redden, Rockliff, Hawkesley, Banfield, Clark and Leuenberger stand up / continue to develop as footballers and if Brown, Fevola, Adcock, Drummond, Buchanan, Merrett, Maguire, Raines, Clarke, McGrath and Charman can get on the park week in and week out in peak condition. Throw Staker, Black and Power into the mix and I think we have a really strong core to our list.

We also have some really promising kids on the list and the ability to make the most of some of our early picks.

I can see plenty of reason to be upbeat about 2011.

Not quite as simplistic as that, going down that one-track youth policy will only get you so far. Dealt pretty well with the GC's involvement.

Bad as it is that you've lost 2-3 senior players, you've got those 2 prospects on board already, and good picks to have another couple of cracks as well.

I don't think there was much untapped potential across Sherman, Rischa, & Johnstone.

This is not meant to be a troll, it's just highlighting the fact that TJ is a very talented player and has been horrible mismanaged by Voss. Yes, we all know he's unaccountable, so why not play him in defence? Turn it up Voss. He came to you in his late 20s, he was hardly going to become a defensive marvel overnight. Your midfield has been reasonable over the last couple of years but not to the extent where Johnstone shouldn't find a spot in there.

What a waste of talent. I sincerely hope he finds another home in 2011. Heck, he'd be welcome back at Melbourne.

I think we needed both stages really. Last year we went after some middle aged guys, because we really lacked players in that age bracket because of the 01-04 run. Since then we haven't really done a solid youth rebuild either. As long as players like Goose, Staker, Buchanon and Clarke can get on the park and contribute, they will really complement all the young players we now have (Rich, Redden, Rocky, Harwood, Polka, Acorn, Beams) and the potential new guys over the next 2 or 3 years.

Players like Goose and Staker are worth even more now that we have lost a good chunk of our mid 20's players in Sherman, Riska and Brennan, guys who were best 22 players. If it's not for the older guys, we are just a side of 18-20 year olds, and we will get pushed around. As you mentioned, the GC has done a good job at avoiding that senario as well.

Interestingly Hawthorn emerging as his likely place of residence as well. Cam is leaving Melbourne as he wanted a 2 year deal, wasn't it Hawthorn that said they wouldn't sign the older guys to more than a year at a time???

Henderson the only loss from that list. Staker had a great season, Maguire a pretty good one. Fevola was going pretty well until he was injured. 48 goals from him wasn't a disaster. And we did need to strengthen our middle aged complement of players.

As such I thought our list management was OK. It looks worse than it was, because of our poor performance and I put much of that down to a large injury list.

Brennan and Rischitelli are losses. I would have given Johnstone another year given they had gone.

Like both Maguire and Staker, will improve the team. Brennan was never really fully committed, just a full on tease, Riska,do we know if he was going before our trade and the club tried to get in early? But what last season shows and the five before. We lack team stability, and wrong team placements from those that know better.

It comes back to laziness on the whole club. Johnathan Brown may be a great marketing tool but to put the whole focus on him smacked of complacency. Not really impressed with those admin people that have been let go; they have held us back both on the field and commercially. The next lot must be better.

Saying "we needed mid-aged players" is all fine and good, but that goes only so far.
They have to be good (and also fit, which was always a factor with Rains & Clarke) footballers.

You've gone balls-out one way, now going back (and IMHO, pretty well) the other way towards a slightly youth-focussed, but not to exclusion of all else, plan.

Ability & fitness should weigh far more heavily than any other factor.

Fair points Slats, we have definitely improved our list management.

I think my point with comparing the list mgt from this year and last was that the in and outs actually look worse this year than last year. The 'youth' we sacrificed end of 2009 included Roe, Harding, Macdonald, Hooper, Henderson (none of which will ever really set the world of fire) while we lost Brennan, Sherman, Rischa, Johnstone, Proud...A whole lot of midfield experience. So while we probably lost more, we definitely dealt with it a lot better.

Where the mistakes came in my opinion was not giving Hadley enough chances in the 2009 draft and we paid over the odds for guys we probably didn't need to. We have definitely improved that this year and some pretty good compensation for the guys we lost. This also giving Hadley a chance to do what he's proven to do quite well so far.

Fitness has definately been a problem for us, and with big changes in that department, hopefully we have a better run next year. At some point we were going to have to do this youth rebuild, but to bring the list back into balance a bit better. Players like Raines and Clarke cost us next to nothing, and are suitable types if they are fit, so they are well worth the risk IMO
