As I calculate things and assuming we finish last with less than 4 wins our picks would be:

I've not included the priority pick because, despite our ledger to date, I'm not assuming we'll qualify for it.

Minor, but picks may also be pushed back a bit if GWS compo picks are used.

Now let's look at all the players* who have been drafted at 70 or beyond over, say, a 5 year period. I'll go back from 2009 as it is not yet fair to judge players drafted after that.

Code:
Year	Pick	Team	Player Games since drafted
2005	70	Port	Jonathan Giles	0
2005	71	Saints	Justin Sweeney	1
2006	70	Lions	Sam Sheldon	24
2006	71	Port Justin Westhoff	76
2006	73	Rich	Andrew Collins	27
2006	74	Saints	Matthew Ferguson	4
2006	76	Bullies	Paul O'Shea	0

2006	82	North Aaron Edwards	53
2006	83	Port Ryan Williams	2
2007	70	Saints	Eljay Connors	0
2007	71	Crows	Aaron Kite	0
2007	72	North Blake Grima	3

2009	77	Saints	Will Johnson	1
2009	84	Lions Bryce Retzlaff	1

*excluding rookie elevations and recycled players for hopefully obvious reasons.

As you can see, there's a handful of decent players in there, but the hit-rate clearly isn't high. Go back a bit further and you get the diamond in Brian Lake, but my point is I wouldn't bank on building your club around those picks, or even reliably picking up "depth" players.

Bartlett came back from knee surgery and was an emergency for a couple of weeks before doing his knee a second time. If his knee fully recovers the kid should be a goodie. No chance in hell of him going anywhere at the end of the year.

All the mail I got from my contacts at Geelong was that they were really disappointed that they didn't pick Bartlett up in the draft. He has been stiff with injuries, but he is a definite keeper. If he gets a clear run with injuries, he is could be a future club champion.

Let's face it we are likely to be at the bottom again this year as another compromised draft takes place.

I'm not sure how many we will de-list but it's a minimum of four and probably should be around the 6-8 mark as a bare minimum.

We need to look outside the square (and I for one am against overseas rookies or converting rugby players or even basketballers unless they have a footy background).

Suburban & Country folk alike - look through your local leagues - identify lads in the 18 -21 category who may have been missed by the system. I watched Michael Barlow's brother Herb run around for North Warrnambool down here last week. He's nowhere near fit enough to play AFL but he played every spot on the ground and was just classes above everyone else. If there are blokes runing around like this or Isaac Smith who went from Redan to North Ballarat to Hawthorn inside 12 months - let's get on them now. We have a gap in this age group and we could do worse than take a few risks on this type of player.

I am also against drafting kids in the very young category ala Sam Sheldon. Sam nominated as a young age player because we guaranteed we would take him rather than him waiting the extra year. The number of kids who get drafted at 17 and get beset by injuries is pretty staggering. I'm of the belief their bodies just are not ready for the loads and some of them end up with the bodies of retirees before they are 25. I reckon Sam has had more than his fair share of injuries so i wish him an injury free 2011 so he can show us what he has. You don't get handed No.3 at our club unless there is something there.

Go Sam.

Basically, the rest of 2011 should tell us who is worth persisting with. We've got the option to pretty much do what we need to do to set the playing group up for 2012. Getting games into youngsters, trialling the fringe players, experimenting and then establishing a system of play that suits our strengths. We'll do all those things this year because we really don't have a "best 22" that demand selection each week.

The 7 picks that Quigley identified seem about right (assuming we'll uppgrade McCauley with the 8th selection). If Charman and Clarke retire and with Fev gone, then we need to delist 4. Right now, I don't think we'll be scrounging around for options for those 4 delistings but, footy being the way it is, chances are that one or two of the blokes who have been written off by all and sundry will pop up and show just enough to warrant another year on the list.

In other words, it is the form displayed in July and August that tends to hold the most currency from a list management perspective. If you have a good last month or so, particularly in senior footy, then you are far better off than if you played well in rounds 1-4 but faded for the rest of the year.

It really is too early to tell. Week by week, the pecking order has been changing. A few weeks ago, Collier showed signs. He's been deplorable since. This week, we'll get to see whether Sheldon is above, below or equal to Collier. I suspect that we'll get the same opportunity to rank the likes of Austin and Hawksley too.

What he said. I agree.

I've noticed that Cal has (predictably) spent some of his rehab time working on his upper body. Looks relatively big across the shoulders compared to when he got here. I'm a believer.

As I calculate things and assuming we finish last with less than 4 wins our picks would be:

1 - pick 4
2 - pick 27 - priority pick
3 - pick 28 - GC compensation pick
4 - pick 30 - second pick of the second round
5 - pick 48 - round 3
6 - pick 66 - round 4 maybe ahead of this if GWS don't have any more selections
7 - pick 84 - round 5 and sure to be higher with passes

Drop one off for the PSD?

Cheynee Stiller would struggle in many suburban football leagues. How the **** he's still on our list, let alone getting a regular spot in the team, is beyond me.
