Missy Bevers, fitness instructor from Midlothian, Texas went to work on April 18, 2016 to start at 4:30am to set up for her class in the pouring rain at the Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian. Her slogan she had posted on Facebook "If it's raining, we're still training" perhaps an unwitting giveaway to her killer as to her location that day.
At approximately 3:50am an unknown assailant is caught on surveillance at the church casually strolling the hallways, using what is likely a hammer to break windows and peer through doors. The suspect is dressed in imitation police SWAT gear with POLICE written on the back. The killer appears undeterred by a possible alarm that may have sounded as they continue their forage.
The killer walks with a distinctive gait, with their legs pointed openly outwards either due to oversized shoes or possibly being overweight. There is still debate on whether the killer is male or female. In some angles the killer appears male and in others female. Height is estimated at approximately 5”2 to 5”7.
Missy arrives at the church at approximately 4:20am, surveillance captures the killer just prior however police do not indicate whether the murder is caught on film. Cause of death is noted as numerous puncture wounds. Just after 5:00am a fitness member arrives at the church and finds Missy unresponsive and calls 911 however she is pronounced dead at the scene.
To add to the mysteriousness of the case, footage is released from a nearby gun store SWFA Outdoors is released by the store some time later of a vehicle entering the parking lot and behaving oddly, turning off lights and driving through the parking lot. The vehicle is described as a Nissan Ultima however police have not confirmed they are related. The suspect on surveillance and the vehicle appear to behave in a similar manner.
Following the murder information is noted that there may have been infidelity and financial strains within the marriage. Missy had informed a friend she had received creepy messages on the LinkedIn website messaging some days prior to the murder. Her husband, Brandon Bevers was away on a fishing trip when the murder occurred. Adding to the accusations directed at the husband, days after the murder Brandon’s father Randy, brought a blood stained shirt into a local dry cleaners stating the family dog had been in a fight. The dry cleaner lodged a tip with police who subsequently investigated, however tests concluded it was animal blood and further investigations confirmed Randy was in California when the murder was committed. Unhelpful to their cause, shortly after the dry cleaning incident Brandon and Randy speak briefly with reports outside the police station, Randy then turns and walks off and exhibits the near exact same gait as the killer in the video. Family state Randy has a neck condition which would not allow him to move to the extent the killer does through doors etc in the surveillance video.
The question remains whether the attack was random in that Missy was in the wrong place at the wrong time or targeted. When viewing the behaviour of the suspect on video, this as a random atack is a viable theory given they are not lying in wait and focussed on an attack. The other theory is that the murder was targeted by a jilted lover / lovers female partner, or an obsessed stalker. The family have been ruled out as suspects by the police, however the lack of information released by police is frustrating to say the least.
True Crime Broads podcast is devoted nearly entirely to this murder. A good source of information with recent interviews with some police and family members. As the six year anniversary approaches, will this case be solved?
