The Cuts

A bit inspired by a certain thread from a couple of years ago but also because we're at a point of being able to talk about it.

Now, the following are OOC come the end of the year:

Dominic Barry (Assumed, as a 2012 GWS zone recruit)
Rohan Bail
Sam Blease
Shannon Byrnes
Daniel Cross (Performance Optioned to 2015)
James Frawley
Alexis Georgiou (Assumed, as a 2013 rookie)
James Harmes (Assumed, as a 2013 rookie)
Neville Jetta (Assumed, as a 2013 rookie)
Max King (Assumed, as a 2013 rookie)
Tom McDonald
James Strauss
Luke Tapscott
Dean Terlich (Assumed, as a 2012 draftee)

The obvious:
Shannon Byrnes. Night night Boo-urns.

The failed draftees:
James Strauss
Luke Tapscott
Sam Blease
All three have eight weeks and I would say that all three are on the block.

The free agent:
James Frawley. See the twenty million Frawley threads on virtually every team board + D&T + MB + The Bay.

The possible:
Dean Terlich. I think he'll stay but I'm interested in what happens here.

The extensions:
Tom McDonald.
Rohan Bail
Dom Barry
Daniel Cross

The promotion:
Neville Jetta

Rookies I'm not sure - I could have sworn rookies got 2-year deals?

Is Evans contracted next year?

Don't forget we have an extra spot for Mitch Clarke, and probably won't go for any free agents if Frawley leaves.

Also, I'm pretty sure the rookies get 2 years.

Dominic Barry - Think the club see him as a project player, would like to see him stay on. I'd say 90% chance of keeping him
Rohan Bail - I don't think he'll be in a premiership side but he doesn't deserve to be delisted. 90%
Sam Blease - The fact he hasn't gotten a game when we are crying out for some run is pretty telling, hoping to see him under Roos for at least a handful of games before the year is out. 40%
Shannon Byrnes - Gone. 5%
Daniel Cross - Has definitely shown enough for an extension. 95%
James Frawley - Would love to keep him but I think he is gone. 30%
Alexis Georgiou - Will probably earn another year on the rookie list. 80%
James Harmes - Hard to tell but I'd say it is unlikely he'll be with us next year. 30%
Neville Jetta - Continues his current form and he could be looking at a 3 year deal. 100%
Max King - Ruckmen take time and Jamar is getting on, I think he'll be around as a rookie next year. 70%
Tom McDonald - I have serious question marks on him, but he has shown a fair bit for a young KPP. 100% (We'd have to trade him if he wanted to leave and that won't happen)
James Strauss - Like Blease it is telling he can't get a game. I think both he and Tappy are gone, with Blease a slightly better chance of getting a new contract. 20%
Luke Tapscott - See above. 20%
Dean Terlich - Shits me up the wall but I don't think we are in a position to delist him just yet. 90%

Strauss, Blease and Byrnes are certain delists. Nicho and Evans would be too, but contracted it seems? Bugger.

How many players we delist will depend on how deep Roos and the coaching staff see this draft to be. I'd think we'll be trading our second rounder and using our first pick (with or without Frawley comp). Hopefully there's another JKH or Kent type we can snare in the third round.

Strauss, Blease and Byrnes are certain delists. Nicho and Evans would be too, but contracted it seems? Bugger.
I'm sure Nicho is out of contract, Evans has another year though.

Clark - retired
Byrnes - retired
Nicholson - delist
Strauss - delist
Terlich - delist
Blease - Possible year extension/delist
Tapscott - possible year extension/delist
Frawley - possible exit via free agency

5 guaranteed spots freed up but possibly up to 8

Barry - year extension
Bail - year extension
Cross - year extension
McDonald - 3 year extension
Jetta - promoted to senior list 2 year deal
Georgiou - retain as rookie/promoted to senior list if Frawley leaves.
Harmes - retain as rookie
King - retain as rookie

If we delist everyone i said and Frawley leaves, give us 8 senior spots, Jetta and Georgiou to get promoted leaves us with 6 senior spots and 2 rookie spots.

We will have pick 4 and 5 as it stands which is highly likely where we will finish. Brayshaw and Petracca should be our 2 main targets for these picks. Hopefully we can get Billy stretch as a 3rd rounder, this leaving our 2nd round pick up for trade, either for a ruckman (Lycett) or another senior midfielder similar to the Bernie Vince trade. Our last 2 spots could be used on getting some key position/ruck depth.

Rookie list I wound't mind giving Troy Davis another go and perhaps giving Tyler Roos a crack, have our own Roos star playing.

I think OP is spot-on.

If Frawley leaves and Jetta gets upgrade, that leaves 5 draft spots, which seems about right.

Has Nicho really got another year? Happily send one of him/Terlich on their way. Only room for 1 (at most). Happier to keep Evans around for another year.

One extra year for Bail/Cross/Barry, 2/3 for McDonald.

My take:

Dominic Barry - keep, need to see more before making a decision.
Rohan Bail - Showed he can run both ways. Keep.
Sam Blease - Seems pretty obvious Roos doesn't like him. Will probably go to West Coast and win a flag.
Shannon Byrnes - Another Neeld special. I appreciate him playing for us but he never set the world alight.
Daniel Cross - Deserves another year for sure.
James Frawley - Who knows? If we can get decent compo I'd walk him out the door with a thanks for everything (not sarcastic).
Alexis Georgiou - Keep - handy depth.
James Harmes - Know nothing about him TBH.
Neville Jetta - Promote that man.
Max King - I've only seen him on "Demonchef" so I have NFI.
Tom McDonald - Keep, especially if we can fashion some new legs for him that will enable him to hit targets.
James Strauss - Time's up unfortunately.
Luke Tapscott - Probably in the same basket as Blease.
Dean Terlich - Who knows? I'd keep him, personally. One year deal though.

Also that Jones bloke. Not the M one though, the N one.

s**t overrated hack

Back on topic heard crossy on MMM saying he would be keen to go on next year and he Is only a couple short of his clause to go again anyway

If Sam blease doesn't get a gig in the next 2 weeks id think his career will be cut short as will James Strauss
Tappy is one I like but he is in the same boat

Chip would appear to be gone IMO so that's 6 spots freed up with retirements of boournns and Clark

I like terlich but I have a feeling he will join nicho and Evo on the scrap heap as someone else said

Rookies I'm not sure - I could have sworn rookies got 2-year deals?

Retain:
McDonald - can't kick, can defend
Jetta - seems to be doing a job, will get re-instated to the senior list

Free Agent:
Frawley - I feel he is likely to go

Gone at the end of this season:
Blease - can't get a game
Byrnes - retire
Strauss - can't get a game
Tapscott - can't get a game

Gone in the next few seasons:
Bail - limited player, tries hard, not good enough
Clisby - can't get a game
Cross - 1 or 2 seasons left?
Evans - hasn't done much
Fitzpatrick - can't see him making it
Georgiou - stop gap, adds a bit of defensive depth
Jamar - 1 or 2 seasons left?
McKenzie - see Bail
Nicholson - bad
Terlich - see Bail

Too early to call:
Barry
Harmes
King

So I see 5 spots on the list opening up (with Clark retiring and Jetta getting promoted) at the end of this season, if not more. We'll certainly turn another 10 or 12 more over in the coming seasons.

Eh, I don't think Bail has done enough to warrant a place long term. He does put in both ways but he's still slow, poor by foot and his tackling isn't much chop. He gets reasonable numbers, but have a look at who slips off Bontempelli when he kicks the sealer. I've noticed him miss a fair few or get brushed off in the games I have seen this season. We've got way too many blokes on the list who get 10, 12 touches a game.

A new fad sweeping the Melbourne FC, wasting high draft pics...add blease tapscott and strauss to the bin and it's getting pretty full.

Hardly a new fad...

He hasn't retired but the man has 0% chance to stay on the list. I thought he was a poor player in a great side at Geelong and in a poor side he has been just as bad if not worse. Feel bad for bashing him as he is a ripper bloke but not up to AFL standard.

Anyone else finding it exceedingly difficult to pick the delistings at the end of this year, compared to other years?

Byrnes and Strauss are the Monty's - and you would suspect Tapscott and Blease will need to put in some pretty impressive performances to save their bacon, however it wouldn't shock me totally if Blease gets one more year under Roos.

We have an existing spot available because of Mitch Clarks retirement as well.

All of these however, is hardly a 'clean out', so it would seem that it is certainly possible that their will be some tough and surprising decisions come year end - perhaps even some unexpected trade moves?

On the topic of Blease, Tappy and Strauss;

Struass, definitely gone has shown the least of all three and yes probably the worst run of injuries but hasn't done anything to show he could be of value at AFL level.
Blease, 50/50 arguably the most talented, has no problems wining the footy and playing good offensive footy at VFL level. However his struggles with the consistent defensive side to his game has been well reported. I'd like to see him given another year, he unlike Struass has shown he is capable of playing some good AFL footy. Other clubs would be interested in him.
Tappy, 70/30 in favour of staying. Hasn't shown the same form as Blease in the VFL, but of the three has appeared from the outside to comply with Roos' defensive requirements. I would like to see him given another year, hopefully get a better run with injuries too.

While i'm at it, you could add in Evans to the mix, as he has been on the list for a few years now has had his injury struggles but also shown he can play some quite good footy like Blease, but also like Blease has struggled with the defensive side of his game. It's a tough call, personally i see Michie and Riley in front of him, and on that basis could be shown the door. I hate saying it as we can't re-rookie everyone but could he be nev jetta V2015.
