Honest question here:

Dangerfield was a restricted free agent. Why did we choose not to match the salary offered by Geelong and force a trade?

Was this to our benefit or as a gesture of goodwill to Danger?
All parties knew it was pointless. Danger wasn't staying here. Geelong knew we could outbid them. Them bidding, then us matching, then Danger saying "I'm still not staying, trade me and only to them," would've just been a big waste of time and paperwork and ended up with everyone in the same position.

I just saw this thread and thought “What?? How...??” I was surprised to see it.

Then it struck me. I had a dream last night that we’d traded DMac to Port - and this just brought me back down to earth 😑

Hope you changed the sheets

Question is will we hear the same trotted line that David Mackay has been one of the most impressive on the training track?

Or was that only due to Campo?

Interesting question. Maybe he will flourish after all this time?

One of the few players described by his input - good trainer, knows the running patterns - rather than output - goals kicked, effective possessions, Brownlow votes

More than happy for him to surprise us all

Yep certainly got sick of hearing that over the years

Campo: "D Mac has been super impressive on the training track and I'm not easily impressed... Wow! A blue car!"

I didn't see it that way. Danger couldn't say "I'm still not staying, trade me and only to them," He was a restricted free agent. If the crows matched Geelong's offer, Danger had two choices. Play with us or go into the pre-season draft. We might have ended up with a situation similar to what happened to Stevens and Port Adelaide. Personally I think Dangerfield would have had enough integrity to honour Adelaide's offer and play out the year with Adelaide. We'll never know because Adelaide were weak and caved in.

I think I remember (bear with me, getting old can mean thinking you remember something) Danger saying after he was traded that he would have remained with us if we'd matched and Geelong had been unable to do the deal.

Is 2020 the year Mackay finally wins his first Gold Jacket

That would be more like a nightmare, losing one of our favourite players to Port. I could see him winning a Showdown Medal with his great run and carry out of defence and penetrating kicks to their leading forwards. :)

Or like GC, Jack Martin and Carlton, for a more contemporary example. Basically the club recieving the player has all the power. Some of those are a-holes (Carlton) others are decent (WC). Even though the AFL said it would apply sniff tests to these things, I'd love to see their sniff criteria because some amazing shizz gets let thru.

With another scintillating year and contract negotiations held off by his manager until the end of the season, speculation intensified that Dmac was out the door. Yes there was a collective sigh of relief that we did manage to secure his signature for next year, but should we have signed him on a long term contract to save us going through a repeat of this angst next year. He's an unrestricted free agent and with all the big clubs circling I'd hate for us to get our pocket picked again. ;)

GC stuffed this up by not redrafting him. They did the work by declining the trade, they just forgot the important bit if the strategy.

Jeebers he has hit the gym, must have put on 6-8 kilos of pure muscle. I know he has been a laughing stock for years but 2020 may be his time
His time?

to shave for the first time?
To get a Brownlow point?
To win a Magary?
