I didn't see it that way. Danger couldn't say "I'm still not staying, trade me and only to them," He was a restricted free agent. If the crows matched Geelong's offer, Danger had two choices. Play with us or go into the pre-season draft. We might have ended up with a situation similar to what happened to Stevens and Port Adelaide. Personally I think Dangerfield would have had enough integrity to honour Adelaide's offer and play out the year with Adelaide. We'll never know because Adelaide were weak and caved in.
We were negotiating with Geelong well before any moment where we had to match - if they knew we were going to match and ask for an unreasonable amount of additional compensation for Dangerfield, they would have just made a bid for him that we couldn't match.

Remember, they had multiple senior players coming out of contract that year - Bartel, Enright, Motlop, Mackie, Kelly, Rivers and Stokes. They had MUCH more available salary cap than we did.

They were always getting Dangerfield. The reason they negotiated with us was for the OTHER signings. They wanted Dangerfield's salary cap amount low to keep room for others. They're all getting massive amounts of cash opportunities outside the cap, so the other players wouldn't care what Danger got.

It's insane that we're the only club who's gotten more than compo for a free agent, and people think we're weak.

Surely starting on the ground at half-back in the Victorian state side on February 28. One of the first picked I would imagine, you can’t buy that sort of experience Dmac has.

That would be more like a nightmare, losing one of our favourite players to Port. I could see him winning a Showdown Medal with his great run and carry out of defence and penetrating kicks to their leading forwards. :)
That's what he'll be doing while playing for us in a showdown...:'(

Add another sacked coach to the long list of Mackay backers

Will they ever learn?

No
Mackay on his way to his 300th .....and into Crows immortaility ....will be criminal if he's not in the Leadership Group this season ....criminal !

True, he was in Melbourne's best 😉

Credit where it's due. It was under Walshy at AO on a damp and windy day and he played an absolute cracker. Fully deserved his vote and wouldn't have been anything wrong with him getting 2. He did poll well in the Hawthorn B&F with double points on offer in our 2016 semi-final though. Played an absolute bottler for the brown and yellow that day.

6 years missing the finals out of the last 10 says they don't
Look I don't want him in the side either, what I'm saying is people here are far less qualified to judge.

I still don't think he'll play R1 BTW

Who’s going to run the patterns?
I know you're being jocular but you'd hope a new senior coach who bases his philosophy on the contest won't pay too much attention to that. Particularly with a long serving assistant no longer there also.

Running patterns are still important mind you. He can run them in the SANFL.

Can we now call him 150Kay?

If we didn't poop the bed in the 2017 Grand Final - would this change your opinion of him?
Always a lot of ifs around us.

It's because our coaches are the types that value what Mackay brings to the table that we constantly have results like that.

Not that he's completely responsible for them of course but we apply the same 'rate Mackay' rationale to all of our decisions.

We simply misjudge what is important for when we come up against good opposition and in crunch games.

We are seduced by the 'other times'

Not Mackay's fault at all. He just plays and tries his best. It's 100% on the coaches.

Nicks will be the next coach to either pass or fail the test. D Mac will be dazzling in preseason. He'll be welcoming to the new players. He'll be vocal in team meetings. He'll return from the holiday break in tip top shape. He'll do everything the coach expects of his players and others he's competing with for a spot won't.

Can he play football? No. But we don't ask that question. Or haven't since Blight
