It’s all at sea.

When Petracca took that mark deep in the pocket on the boundary, centred the ball, Essendon spoiled and run it out. 3 possessions and an Essendon fwd was all alone taking an uncontested mark 20m out with barely a defender in sight. Barely an ounce of pressure on the play from the top of our own goal square.

That’s on the coaches.

I guess the good thing is we can't defend any worse. Like not only is everyone out of form (except Salem) but as a unit it is almost comically uncohesive

Getting the midfield mix right will really help here, I think Goody said they all had major surgery and that's all well and good, but we need to roll some guys through there that will A) Get on the outside and in good position regularly and B) Run hard defensively and play the defensive side of the stoppage.

We have too many young hot heads that see ball->get ball. I'd even tell Jones that you can do this role, you run, block and scrap to make better positions for our Oliver's, Brayshaws and Vineys. We need to show the other team more respect in this area and that we can't just rely on Gawn feeding these guys for clean clearances forever, we need more balance to our game.

A lot of it is a lack of maturity and a lack of smart on field leadership. Viney too might need to sacrifice his game for the greater good

I've been wondering whether the absence of Lewis is a significant factor in our backline rabbleness. No one seems to know where or who they should be on, when, how where. I recall Lewis doing a lot of pointing and yelling in defence last year, maybe without him theyre all at sea, even more so with less runner messages as well. Thoughts?

Seen some post before on facebook that we havent won with him out of the team not sure if its true but thought wtf

Omac was genuinely great for a long periods last year.

Correct. Omac is having a disappointing season but he really was good last year. Particularly the start and end. And I know this because I used to think he was a spud.

At the end of the year he was our number 2 defender. Remember when he couldn't stop Hawkins and the coaching staff didn't trust him for the rest of the year?
In fact we were so worried we went and got May

Could be a coincidence but we don't seem to have a lot of leadership down back, Jetta and Hibberd are well experienced but they don't strike me as onfield strategists

Just down back? Show me a leader anywhere on the ground and id say those 2 are closest we have which is saying something. But yeah i thought Lewis in the team didnt help at all with him rolling round with his zimmer frame but if that stats legit then just shows how much he puts our back 1/2 in order

Melbourne’s record with Jordan Lewis:

Games Won = 28
Games Lost = 15
Points For = 98.5
Points Against = 81.4

Melbourne’s record without Jordan Lewis:

Games Won = 0
Games Lost = 7
Points For = 78.7
Points Against = 109.3

Are we lacking some genuine leadership, particularly down back to help our fragile defence?

Thats what i was talking about

I thought we got May off the back of your campaign for him on BigFooty?

Was impressed with gold coast the way they defended today. For a team who are the red hot favourites for the spoon they were well organised. Sure they made a few mistakes which you expect from such inexperienced. They only conceded 9 goals and I think the worse run on was of 3 goals at the end. There was a period in the second where the dogs dominated inside 50 and they hung on. They lost the quarter but only by 8. The way Melbourne's backs are functioning probably would have been a 7 goal to 1 quarter and the game completely turned. I don't want to sound so negative, the club can turn it around but gee wiz I'm losing patients.

Very alarming that your business model as a doctor relies upon the MFC's form.

With no Lewis and a lack of runners our defence is a disorganised shambles. He may be slow and only half the player he used to be but Lewis's leadership is clearly integral down there.

This is deeply concerning moving forward. I assume Lewis retires at the end of the year. Hibberd and Jetta are getting on and not providing any real leadership. I don't think Jones is suited for the back half.

I'm looking to Salem to keep building his game and start marshalling the troops a bit. I'd like to see Lewis working closely with him to build Salem's leadership qualities. We're desperately going to need it over the next few years.

Yeah i dont think many people realise without the runners out there basically coaching for 1/2 the game how important on field leadership has become. We have ****ing nothing out there in way of leadership. Id love to know from someone whos been at the games live how many times Jones is pointing and rallying the troops. We just flat out lack leadership and id be finding leaders from with in and outside to bring in. sick of this poor melbourne bullshit get into each other demand better standards players dont like it **** them off after the tail leading the dog last pre season with oh poor me that was too hard bullshit

Forgot to say i agree with Salem and i think his role allows him to have a few seconds to sort it out. Obviously Lever is that man down back and why we brought him in cause he has that leadership aspirations

Considering how much we paid for them (and I think we slightly overpaid for both of them, but that's a debate for another day) - the Lever and May acquisitions simply HAVE to work for us if we want to go all the way in the next few years.

**** that is a pretty good indication of the importance of him in the team
