Strategy The Demise of the Key Defender?

Bringing the ball to ground just doesn’t work as well as it used to I reckon.

Defence is also about not making mistakes, Dougal is absolutely not the best in this regard.

Defence is leas about the individual and more about system and bug in from the midfield group.

Hawthorns defence wasnt filled with super tall guys. Neither is Richmonds. Hawthorn relied on sub 190cm guys like Gibson and Stratton to play on taller opponents. It is their systems that make them look so good.

That is where we break down

Hawthorn’s defence was its weakest area. They had prime Franklin for a chunk, a gun midfield meaning the defence were pressured less than pretty much any other, and they could even afford to throw Roughead and Hodge back for matchups

We put more resources into our defence than any other area, and so the ball ends up there a lot (when the press fails). Deficiencies are exposed more often as a result.

If your gameplan involves playing extra men back most of the time, you need a matchup for everything because every matchup in your defence will be tested, and your failures will lose games

Hawthorn went and got Brian Lake (195cm/100kgs) in October 2012 in a trade and then got James Frawley (193cm/94kgs) via Free Agency in October 2014. They also had the mighty Matt Spangher play in their middle flag. They had plenty of height in defence, in their 3 flags.

It was 2008 flag that Hodge had to play CHB and they didn't have much height after Croad went off injured in the 1st quarter.

After being beaten by Sydney in 2012 GF because they struggled against the height of Roberts-Thompson, Reid, Goodes, Pyke and Mumford rotating thru the forward line after quarter time . Pyke and Roberts-Thompson had a marking day out for them. They then went after Lake and added Spangher and then Frawley.
