tony's introduction to the Sweet FA was unusual to say the least - perhaps unique. But a touch over 24 months later, tony has blossomed into one of the league's best-known and hardest-working posters.
For those unfamiliar with the story, tony's introduction to the league was one of chance. Ahead of Season 29, at the start of 2020, then-captain of the Bombers WaynesWorld19 erroneously tagged tony in the Bombers' official squad submission post. WaynesWorld19 was, of course, attempting to tag our dear friend Tony Lynn 15.
A Demon at the time (and now, interestingly, a Bomber), The Jesus noticed the error, waited for the squad submission deadline, and broke the story to Sweet in this thread - in my view one of the best threads of our time:
Media - The Evolution of a Sweet FA poster: Meet "Tony"
Hi friends I would like to introduce you to someone most of you don't already know, tony Here's some interesting facts about Tony you probably didn't know: 1. Tony had a Real Madrid top with Raul's signature on it which he was trying to sell. However I don't know if the sale was successful...
And a star was thrust into the limelight.
Now, several seasons on, tony is not only part of the Sweet FA, but is part of the furniture. How did it happen? I wanted to learn a little bit more about tony, who was gracious enough to answer some questions for me recently. Please enjoy!
H: tony, thanks for joining me. The start to your career was - and I don't use this word often - epic, born from a The Jesus Nancy Drew job. When The Jesus first contacted you to tell you about the thread/incoming tags, did you have any idea about what the Sweet FA was?
T: Thanks Headless, it's a pleasure to talk to you.
Yeah I guess I have a SFA origin story few others would have. I had no idea what the Sweet FA was or that it even existed on BigFooty, so when I got that pm from The Jesus, I had no idea what he was on about. He explained what had happened and why I was about to get tagged but it all just made no sense to me.
H: But then - a little out of the blue from my perspective - you joined an expansion bid with the Serpents, alongside The Jesus. Is that right? How did you find that experience, and what are your thoughts on potential expansion currently?
T: When The Jesus made that thread and I started interacting with it, I was contacted by a lot of the clubs and I did consider joining the league but at that time I was going through a personal matter which I needed some time to resolve, so because of that I made the decision to wait until the next season to join.
That was when I was contacted by the Serpents, it worked for me, as it meant I could check out the league, join something new and exciting but also not have to be active until the next season. I enjoyed being apart of the Serpents, the old heads in the team were great giving us rookies hints and tips on what to expect when we joined the league. It probably meant I was more ready to join the league than if I had just joined a club myself.
I am for expansion if it adds value to the league and I think the Old Boys will certainly do that. They have built up a very good squad which I think most people in the league will have fun posting against.
H: I'm sure Tigerturbulance will be pleased to hear that!
You're now at the Bears, who have gone through I guess a bit of a list refresh recently - would that be fair? MWPP stood down from the captaincy after a long stint, and Muddiemoose has taken the top job. You've also been named in the leadership group, alongside Senor M, Electronic_Renaissance, Suns Supreme, Millky95, JoshWoodenSpoon, and Broken (plus MWPP and Muddiemoose, of course). How are you finding that experience, and what would you say is the main goal of the Bears' leadership group in Season 33?
T: We did have a bit of a list refresh at the end of last season, we delisted some inactives and were able to bring in some very good posters who each bring something different to the squad.
I am enjoying my time in the LG, learning from the experience heads we have in then and getting a chance to help shape and make the Bears a better team.
MWPP did a great job of steadying the ship whilst she was captain and now Muddiemoose is the perfect person to take the Bears into the future. The main goal of the Bears LG in Season 33 is to make Muddiemoose look like a competent captain and make sure he doesn't **** something up, that is why our LG is so big, its a big job. But in all seriousness we would like for the Bears have a bigger presence in the Sweet FA.
H: On a more personal level, do you have captaincy aspirations for the future - at the Bears or elsewhere? And more generally, what are you hoping to get out of Season 33? A high beez finish? Just straight up enjoyment?
T: I am not interested in being captain, I am quite happy to sit in the background and help
H: Last question. You've gone from having no clue what this is all about to being one of the league's most respected posters. Do you have any advice or tips for new players just getting started and trying to find their way?
T: I still have no clue what is going on but I think that is the beauty of the Sweet FA, no one actually knows what's going on. My advice to rookies would be, pick a persona and have fun with it, you can be anyone you want to be just not Fat Tony, that's mine and don't be afraid to ask questions and ask for help, their are many good people in the Sweet FA willing to help.
H: Wise words. Thanks so much for your time, tony. I think our dear friend The Jesus said it best:
Oh I almost forgot, Tony if your watching I can already see a bright future for you in the Sweet FA if you are ever inclined to join.
