Kids see the 'brave' acts of players like Selwood and then try to replicate it themselves. See an oncoming player? Lower the head and draw the free. Get brushed in a contest? Scream to the umpire and act like you are entitled to a free. Get light touch in back? Jump forward like you have been hit by a truck. It's terrible sportsmanship and bad for the game.

Your right... Kids should see more brave sportmanship acts of trying to injure a player by pushing him into a goal post hey?

Scores last night were almost identical to six weeks ago with the result reversed. Congratulations to the Crows for their 6th win against the Cats in the past 20 games in 13 years!. I think i will back us in at the MCG. The Crows are on top, but the top four doesn't mean as much anymore, looking at those last four games, they may not be on top for very long!

I'd probably just back the Cats in at the G, but definitely not been slaughtered. I think last night we addressed all the issues that led to Geelong exposing us so often in the past, so I think the cat may be off the back (puns). I was just saying that the previous post was saying that the G would be the same advantage as Kardinia, which I think is wrong, because one of the big advantages you have there is how small the ground is.

I agree we may lose top spot, but how can you say that the team that has won the most games, and has the best percentage, is "way off the mark"? To me the only worry is how the Crows midfield would go against a star studded midfield, and they stood up in a big way against Dangerwood, so what more do you want from them?

Diving originated interstate, more so out of WEST and SOUTH A. Was never a problem in the good old VFL days.
The only diving back then was done in privacy.

Well you are correct. Diving is a product of West Australian Football. It originated in WA. Phillip Matera was the main culprit. Matera was one of the first divers, and he often did so in a fashion that would put Lindsay Thomas to shame.

Cats, Crows, Port are all off the mark, behind the Swans, Dees, Blacktowners and Bombers. I actually hope we finish 5th! Better chance from there.

You aren't way off the mark- your best footy is very good, as good as anyone's this year and enjoyable to watch. Top 2 finish is likely and then hard to beat at home ground. So in box seat.
Although to be fair, dangerwood were both not right so it will be different next time.

have to agree, watching both Selwood's flick their heads back and fall to ground only to get up and yell at the umpires if a free kick isn't awarded is a blight on the game.
When Chappy, Corey, Bartel and Ablett played the game, there was none of this shit. They won the hard ball fair and square and they played it fair (albeit roughly).
Hawkins is another embarrassment. He throws his arms in the air as if to say "I was held, give me a damn free kick ump". What's worse, he actually stops playing and does that which allows the defender to easily run away under no pressure at all.
Chappy was quite fond of it.

I already mentioned it wasn't a good look. Dangerfield was always gonna try and suck the ump in, like any smart player would. But Greenwood didn't need to do what he did either which was dumb and gave away the footy when his team had it.

I don't want a sanitised game where no niggle exists. Greenwood did what we all want our players to do - show a bit of mongrel.

Dangerfield is the guilty party and he deserves to cop flak for it

Why do they dive and duck so much. They suck the umpires in all the time. Danger and Selwood are the most common offenders. It's a bad look for the game and needs to be stopped.
You answered your own question in the second sentence.

Embarrassing

If that was Lyndsay Thomas it would be a huge news story

Tired of the bs double standard

You know it's ****ed when an opposition supporter thinks exactly like a North supporter.

It is an horrific look at the game. But Geelong seem to have developed a way to play that draws umpires into a net , its like they train to gain frees. I saw Selwood twice last night , after the whistle blew, either calling for the ball or holding it and looking at the umpire as if it was his free, well both occasions I remember , because my son was having a violent outburst of fury at our TV set, he said look at him he thinks its his every time a whistle blows , on these two occasions it was going (amazingly???) to Adelaide, but he plays with the expectation that he'll be free kicked, and on most occasions he is given frees.
It is how ever low a level, it's a level of cheating, yes.
That he has perfected and he is a blight on the game for that.
Paddy just gets looked after.
Remember I am not saying these guys are not great champions , but they are not respected either Selwood for antics,
Paddy for being looked after, and he is don't argue!
Their courage was never in question, but no one should play to get frees, and Selwood does every week.
Hawthorn supporter observations = shyte

They constantly do a lot of things, duck, flop/dive and throw the ball. Last night's home time umpiring was good in that they couldn't get away with these things but in vic the do all the time. IMO between the three that I mentioned, flopping/diving is their worst, worse than ducking.

it's fascinating how almost all football supporters minus Geelong fans (even a few of them too) universally agree on this point and yet the recepients of the additional free cry foul everytime this is brought up.

the league changed the rules because of Joel Selwood... affectionately known as the Selwood rule, and they're still in denial about it. Must be a coincidence... they call it the Selwood rule to honour him.

Heck, some Cat's fans genuinely think he has a special ability to be tackled that earns him frees legitimately. it's amazing the power of delusion

I sort of understand lots of the perspectives in this thread (we got the run of the green big time after the 1st quarter last night, and playing for frees is steadily working its way into our game which I don't like), but I can't even begin to understand the idiots calling for Danger's head for "diving" in the Greenwood incident.

If you look at that footage and call what happened a dive you're not a footy fan - you're a troll or a moron. No other options.

Wow. This from a Cats fan......no sarcasm intended?
