Sportsman's lunch on 13th May at Hong King Football Club. Guest speakers, Mike Sheahan and Jobe Watson. I'm in 2 minds;

1. Attend and run the risk of not being able to stay polite when the issue of the medals comes up
2. Boycott the event, and run the risk of upsetting my friends

I'm actually most upset because I'm a member of the HKFC and we are letting scum like Watson through the door
Just go and ask him the questions he doesn't want to be asked.

Make your feelings known to HKFC, you are entitled to as a member
Ask Jobe if "fairest" should be removed from "best and fairest"

I think if they sign new contracts now they would be obliged to stay.
However the real question, as someone else pointed out, is "compensation payments" falling ouitside the salary cap. This makes it so easy for Essendon to say "we will givew you $1.2 million in compo if you then sign for 5 years at less than market rate".
It really annoys me how the AFL are doing everything they can to help Essendon, so the other 17 clubs are disadvantaged yet again.
I see it as a fall back position.
Ultimately I'm nearly certain the players can still elect to leave as a delisted free agents at season's end at their discretion.
Don't forget there is still an active appeal in Switzerland to play out yet..

Compensation & salary cap issue has been addressed. You are jumping at shadows.
Essendrug* to their credit are working very closely with AFL House to ensure they 100% follow protocol on this issue. The last thing they need is to be breaching salary cap.

I'm no lawyer but the judge can attribute part or all of the blame on the player. No guarantee they will get anything although I think they will. Be funny if Essendon produce a bunch of evidence which says the players knew what they were taking.
This is what I'm waiting for. We won't be able to pop enough popcorn for this show.

CAS found the players individually responsible for taking banned substances. This has set up the classic catch 22: the players must admit to taking banned substances in order to have something to sue over and the club must argue the players are not innocent little lambs in order to avoid paying.

The only way out of this dilemma has been to pay the players a salary they aren't earning and pay for appeals they won't win. But when the slush money runs out and more money must be paid well then the trap springs. To the delight of all observers!

Hooker re-signs for the Bombres. Most have.

It's certainly doesn't really fit with the "the players don't know what they were given and were duped" story.
Yes for players that were duped and angry, why not leave when given the chance?
100% complicit in EVERYTHING that went down.
Hence the lies on the ASADA forms.

I've posted this elsewhere, but I'm pretty certain this is the deal:

1. Hooker drops the legal action.
2. Essendon gives him a 5 year contract.
3. The deal includes Hooker being paid while he's suspended and everything is confidential.

Essendon gains from the legal action going away; Hooker gets an exorbitant contract.

It's a win/win for PEDs use, and other players will be lining up for their share.

If you sat anyone down from another code and explained to them that a club's players could claim for 3+ years that they didn't know what they were injected with, that they were banned for 12 months for doping, and then show them the list of those same players re-signing with the club who injected them....they'd ask if you were batshit crazy.

Davo, it's a good theory, but his exorbitant Buddy-like contract goes into the Essenscum* salary cap.

If they let the insurance company pay him out, there is no doubt that the AFL will rule that it doesn't count. Guaranteed.

Either that or the EFC are cashing in (or out) on this once in a lifetime opportunity to make massive discretionary payments under the guise of "compensation" outside the cap with the total blessing of the AFL.

Cheating does come naturally to them after all

Hope Jobe knows the penalty for drug trafficking in Hong Kong. Heeny certainly found out the penalty for trying to jump someone's taxi in LKF

As it turns out I know one of the guys organising this. He just posted the same pic on Facebook.

Perhaps we can help you with a few questions to ask our doping friend, Mr Jobe?

We could start with...

So Jobe, can you explain why if you were told, according to what you claimed in the media, that you were being injected with the "good Thymosin", why did you and your teammates never declare these injections to ASADA? And who advised you not to?

Thankfully Hong Kong Dollars
It's still $160 too much - I find Jobe boring at the best of times

It's a pretty cool gig this being banned. Pick up a wage for no training or playing, travel the corporate/sporting speaking circuit and having the cheek to charge for it.
I wonder if there are conditions attached to what questions get asked

Yes but regardless of who is on the list they always have to pay the salary cap where as money paid outside the cap comes out of their own pocket. I'm not sure insurance is going to cover these claims as I suspect the threats are essentially blackmail against the club rather than legitimate civil action.

Yeah sorry, I can't believe things would have gone backwards since I studied a sports law unit in 2002 where drugs in sport and strict liability were drilled in to us by lecturer Sam Cusumano (who is still involved in footy admin/ law). 99% of the class weren't even athletes at a high level. Sorry, but we didn't know (and we didn't declare usage of 'vitamins') excuses don't cut the mustard).
