The coveted first selection went the way of the Greater Western Sydney Giants, followed by Brisbane, Carlton, Fremantle, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Since a 'snake format' will be used for this draft, the order is then reserved for the clubs' second selections, and so on.

Draft order
1. Greater Western Sydney Giants

3. Carlton Blues
4. Fremantle Dockers

Given that only Vic has multiple teams picking from the 1 state, and women could only nominate 1 state, the order is really

1. Carlton
2. Bulldogs
3. Collingwood
4. Melbourne
1. GWS
1. Brisbane
1. Freo
1. Adelaide

Can players nominate more than one state draft?
No. The priority picks were the chance to get interstate players. Club's had to arrange a deal that made them willing to move, eg jobs in the club.

For the draft, players have to nominate a state. It doesn't have to be there Home state, but only clubs in that state can pick them.

After the draft, there is a free agency selection for 2 or 3? picks. These can be from anywhere. So a Vic who wasn't drafted but who was desperate to get in could sign on for Adelaide for example.

Thanks for that

Giants get pick 1

1) it was drawn out of a hat in a lottery. Pure chance.

2) Players nominate a State before the draft, so it's not like we can choose just anyone.

3) Everyone gets two picks before we get another one with the back and forth reverse order snake thing.

4) [edit: deleted - it wasn't very nice]

So now there is the free agency period. Does anyone know how this works and in what time frame? Presumably the cut-off will be pretty soon.

Any surprise omissions people expect will get FA spots? To me Beth Kearney, Tanya Hetherington, Amy Harrison, Tahni Nestor, Georgia Hammond, Sarah Perkins, Alicia Janz, Norieul Kinross, Jessica Trend, Amy McDonald and Hayley Wildes amongst others may feel a bit unlucky to be overlooked.
