The draft myth?

Would your side be any different if it was Clinton Young instead of Hill or any other soft outside runner with shaky skills.

No doubt they are important structurally and their roles are importance but that why they are called role players.

Smith was taken high and a fair few teams didn't have access to him. He shouldn't count in the teams had access to him argument.

Up there with the best wingers of the comp, but not my point.
Clinton Young was weak as piss every single time, as the Pies fans found out as well.

The draft is failing simply because of one reason. Players are drafted at too young of an age. Teams are drafting 18 year olds and having to spend 4 years of development, to gett them to become afl players. Then the higher up clubs like hawthorn and co swoop and get them for cheap and not have to spend time developing them, this then keeps teams at the bottom and teams at the top.

About the best post so far in this thread. The 'Destination' club (plus good drafting and development) is now having a bigger influence than the draft itself with the possible exception of KPF who I think you can only consistently get with a very early pick. Hawthorn are easily the most popular club in Vic for Victorian players to go to with probably Collingwood second. Something Freo has battled with for ages now versus Victorian clubs or going to WC instead.

The end result to combat that is now becoming a lot of pressure on talented youngsters to sign long extensions very early to stop them leaving - especially if they are a talented young KPF taken early. e.g. Brisbane re-signing Schache before he even finished his first pre-season, Hogan, McCarthy.

So is Hill, as everyone has found out. NTTAWWT. Plenty of soft players get premiership medals.

Pressure to sign Schache to a long term contract is ridiculous but is a great example of a symptom to a serious problem.

Why is the draft failing to even out the competition? Is it time to get rid of the draft and let players play for whichever team they want if the club can afford them under the cap?
Because some teams are shitter and more badly run and the draft doesn't remedy this. Nor is it designed to.

Scrapping the draft would only exacerbate the problem.

Heard Jon Ralph say on SEN that Geelong "finally have a midfield that can punch above its weight". He was talking like Geelong have not won a premiership in decades. They were down for one year, they won a premiership back in 2011, so what is this "finally" that Ralph is talking about?
