DRAFT PODCASTS ARE SRS BSNS

So probably not? Apart from my usual sly amaretto in the tea

Do you think that trading our first draft pick next year was partially influenced by some of our players becoming free agents next year ie we will recieve compensation for them thus re-entering the draft...unless the rules changes.

As compensation relates to age of player and not just salary, I don't reckon thats going to get us into the first round.

Don't be like that ... one of my fishing mates was a brewer at West End and on Friday nights a few of us (fishing mates) went for a few samples from his private tasting temprite .. :p well it was free ..;)

Alex Villis - Norwood

182cm, 70kg, Out Mid/Back Flank

Player Comparison: Luke Partington, Chris Masten

Outside accumulator who can either play as the link up ‘quarterback’ through the backline, or as a hard running wingman. Cool under pressure, he is a player who can quickly weigh up his options and make smart moves. He is a good right foot kick and hits targets, especially over distance. His lack of top end speed is one negative about his game, though he does have great endurance and can run all day. He had a good year in 2016, making the under 18 All Australian team after a very consistent championships across half back, whilst also progressing through the ranks to play 4 senior games for Norwood in the SANFL. His reserves form was consistent, averaging 21 disposals a game.

Draft Range: 20-40. Alex shapes to be one of the first SA players picked at the draft. Players that can run all day and hit targets are always in high demand, but his lack of pace and x factor may see him drop to the 2nd round.

Sam Walker – Glenelg

187cm, 80kg, 3rd Tall Defender

Player Comparison: Joel Patfull, Cam O’Shea

Strong 3rd tall defender who whilst undersized, plays tall and is great one on one. His defensive ability is a real highlight of his game, able to wrestle his opponent and get a spoil in. Sam is a great reader of the play and can zone off and take uncontested marks across half back, before running off and creating with his nice left foot kick. He is consistent from contest to contest and is rarely beaten one on one, and has a good contested mark. He had a consistent year for Glenelg in the SANFL, working his way from under 18s to play 2 reserves games throughout the season. He was one of the form defenders at the national championships, being named All Australian in defence.

Draft Range: 20-40. Sam is one of the best SA prospects this year and could be drafted as early as a high 2nd round pick.

Tye Bedford – Sturt

186cm, 79kg, Outside Mid

Player Comparison: Terry Milera

Hard running wingman with good size and ability to find the ball. At 186cm he has good height for a wingman, takes a lot of marks and works hard defensively. He finds space on the outside and can deliver well inside 50. Under pressure he can rush his kicks in other parts of the ground and his pace could be better for an outside player. He had a good but injury interrupted season, picking up 26 touches a game for Sturts under 18s. He had one outstanding game where he picked up 40 disposals, 10 marks, 10 inside 50s and 3 goals. He played 2 games for South Australia in the championships, kicking 3 goals whilst playing up forward.

Draft Range: 40/Rookie. If Tye is going to be drafted, it will likely be with a late pick, possibly pushing up to a 3rd round. If he lasts to the rookie draft then he may be a good value pick early in the rookie draft.

Steven Slimming – Sturt

182cm, 73kg, Outside Mid

Player Comparison: David Mackay, Jared Polec

Confident wingman with good speed and ability to run off his opponents. He has the ability to take the game on and beat opponents with his pace and end to end running. He was a consistent performer at all levels this year, working from SANFL reserves to play 4 senior games for Sturt. His championships were also consistent, picking up over 17 touches a game for SA. The defensive side of his game is good, harassing opponents, but he lacks the muscle at this point to lay strong tackles on a regular basis. Physically he has some way to go and would need to put on another 4-5kg.

Draft Range: 40-Rookie. Teams would like his running ability and his confidence in taking the game on, but team’s may have queries over his size and ability to convert to AFL. He is another SA player that would be a good value rookie pick if he made it to the rookie draft.

Ben Jarman – North Adelaide

175cm, 68kg, Small Forward

Player Comparison: Mitch Honeychurch

Ben is a slightly built small forward with elite skills on both sides of his body. A natural midfielder, he racked up big numbers all year for North Adelaide in the reserves and under 18s playing as a clearance winning midfielder. Ben reads the play well and gets in good position at the fall of the ball. Whilst he has good pace off the mark, he does lack top end speed and his endurance needs improvement. At this point his ability to play AFL midfield would be doubtful but he might have enough skill and potential to play on a flank. It is still up in the air whether he is choosing Adelaide or Hawthorn.

Draft Range: 50-Late

Mitchell Hinge - Glenelg

187cm, 82kg, Small Defender

Player Comparison: Jake Lloyd, Callum Mills

Mitchell is a two-way small defender, capable of playing as both a shutdown small defender and someone that can create off half back. One on one he is close to the best small defender in this years draft pool, always seemingly able to get in a crucial spoil or tackle at just the right time. He has a real fierceness for the contest and never takes a backward step. Whilst he is tough and strong over the ball, he also knows when to zone off and provide a rebounding option. He has a strong left foot kick and knows how to hit targets. He should become a reliable AFL defender and the sort of warrior you want in your team.

Draft Range: 40-70. Mitch should start to come into play in the third round. His blend of height, toughness and creativity would be an asset to an AFL club.

Jake Comitogianni - WWT

180cm, 70kg, Gen Mid, Forward Flank

Player Comparison: Mitch Banner

Small consistent rover with a great ability to find the football either inside or out. Jake is probably the most natural ball winner in South Australia's draft crop this year, picking up huge amounts of the ball across all levels he played in. He averaged 22 disposals a game at the national champs, whilst also averaging over 26 disposals a game at SANFL reserves level for WWT, sharing the reserves Magarey Medal. He is confident in his skills, though they need refinement. The thing holding Jake back is physically he may not have enough tools for AFL football. He is not overly quick, has a small body shape and the defensive side of his game needs work.

Draft Range: Rookie. The tools of an AFL player are there and a team may take a punt on him based on his ability to find the footy.

Kym Lebois - North Adelaide

175cm, 66kg, Small Forward

Player Comparison: Charlie Cameron

Agile small forward with good pace and evasiveness. Kym has neat skills, hits targets and has good hurt factor with his possessions. Kym had an impressive championships with his defensive ability whilst kicking 3 goals in his 4 games. He kicked 17 goals in 13 under 18 games for North Adelaide, whilst also spending some time running through the midfield, averaging 15 disposals a game. He had an impressive national combine, finishing in the top 10% in the repeat sprints, whilst also recording a 2.96 20m sprint.

Draft Range: 50-Rookie. Whilst small, Kym has shown good form all year as a small forward and may be targetted by an AFL club looking for someone to fill that role. He is likely to go late or maybe drop to the rookie draft.

Tyson Stengle - WWT

171cm, 69kg, Small Forward

Player Comparison: Caleb Daniel

Short, efficient small forward who can play further up the ground and has shown good form at SANFL reserves level. Tyson kicked 37 goals in 20 matches across all competitions in 2016, showing his nous around goals. He kicked multiple goals in 9 matches and impressed with his consistency at reserves level. Tyson is a clean user of the ball who can see the play unfold around him. Good skills and goal sense, he can regularly get out of trouble.

Draft Range: Rookie. His lack of size and a poor combine may mean he drops down to a rookie list spot.

Luke Reynolds - Port Adelaide

188cm, 84kg, 21yo, Medium Forward

Player Comparison: Stewart Crameri

Luke is a lead up 3rd tall forward with good hands and an accurate kick for goal. Luke was rookied by Carlton in 2013 but was delisted without playing a game, he moved back to Port Adelaide where he had his breakout year in 2016. Luke impressed with 43 goals in 17 matches at SANFL level this year, whilst also averaging 5 marks a game. He shone playing deep out of the square with quick leads and strong hands. He has clean skills and a good left foot kick.

Draft Range: Rookie. The query on Luke is whether he has the endurance to make a successful attempt at AFL level. 188cm full forwards aren't overly common anymore and it will be up to Luke to sell the club on where he may fit at AFL level.

Willie Rioli - Glenelg

172cm, 75kg, Small Forward

Player Comparison: Jake Neade

Lively forward pocket full of X factor and great goal sense. Willie is capable of doing the incredible and kicking goals that few people can. He had a decent, but inconsistent season for Glenelg this year, kicking 23 goals in 16 games, including two bags of 5 and another bag of 4 goals. His defensive game can be hit or miss, though when on song he chases and tackles hard.

Well from what I saw there I liked what I saw of Alex Villis. Nice balance and clean on both sides and wasn't flustered into making the wrong kick.
Guys like that make space for themselves by being clean and if he has a pace issue I wouldn't be bothered by it.
If the Cows don't take Jarman they are insane.

Sam Walker – Glenelg

187cm, 80kg, 3rd Tall Defender

Player Comparison: Joel Patfull, Cam O’Shea

Sam is a great reader of the play and can zone off and take uncontested marks across half back, before running off and creating with his nice left foot kick.

I like Sam Walker. Would not be at all surprised if he ended up playing the most games out of all SA boys.
