I have Garner, Motlop & Watts in the SANFL, Bonner, Westhoff & Rockliff in the AFL.

I hope to see Rockliff in the SANFL, but I don't think they'll have the guts to do it till later in the year. Westy starts in the seniors, but in what is likely his last year I could see him dropping out. I also can't start Garner ahead of Bonner until I see more, Bonner is still an under appreciated weapon for us IMO.

Bonner and Garner are 2 different players to me. No way should Bonner be near the backline while Garner I’d trust on the last line of defence.

Will be interesting to see how this changes by end of pre-season. HH, Westy, Rockliff, are players we should be transitioning out of our best 22 I reckon.

B: Hartlett - Jonas - Clurey

Put the better defenders down back.

HB: Burton - Watts - Byrne-Jones

Stack half back with attacking players with good kicks that can take intercept marks and push up the ground.

C: Duursma - Boak - Amon

Stack the middle with your best running machines.

HF: Bergman - Georgiades - Rozee

Half forward is also stacked with good runners who can put on defensive pressure and lead up the ground.

F: Gray - Dixon - Marshall

Forward you've got your big gorilla target that the half forwards and wingmen can deliver the ball deep too, plus a crafty small forward and an athletic tall that has elite speed.

FOL: Lycett - Wines - Rockliff

Wines will have something to prove this year, and Rockliff isn't finished yet.

INT: Ebert - Butters - Houston - Williams

Why isn't Ladhams playing? Because I don't think the two ruck system works with Dixon in the side. It makes us too immobile and stagnant, and Lycett seems to thrive on being the sole ruck. I'd only play Lycett and Ladhams in tandem in games where I'd also bring in Powell-Pepper to support Wines - when the grind of the season is in full swing and we can only play one of Marshall/Georgiades and Butters/Williams.

If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten IMO.

I don’t mind it and like the confidence in the young guys getting up to speed. We lack some depth in defence, unless you’re playing Houston back there.

In reality, Westhoff will be in that side, as will Ladhams and SPP.

A big year ahead for some of the young and old boys.

Bonner, Garner, Patmore, Farrell, Lienert and Atley all will need to show that they are worth persisting with.

Older lads like Sutcliffe, McKenzie, Watts, Motlop and Buzza need to do the same. You could just about put Hartlett, Rockliff and Westhoff in this group but I think their place internally is secure, externally they may be questioned.

I'd prefer to transition out Ebert for Georgiades as our 3rd tall, also hope that Bergmans X Factor and Williams scoring abilities would eventually put them in front of Ebert as forwards. I think this will be Hammers career best season and potentially AA form. Howard will eventually replace Westy, oh wait . I think Watts will be the option to temporarily replace Westy.

Warning - hypothetical only
Look at the side below, consider them fit and firing.
Would they be premiership contenders? Hell yeh.

F: Ladhams - Dixon - Wingard
HF: Ebert - Marshall - Rozee
C: Polec - Boak - Duursma
HB: Burton - Watts - Byrne-Jones
B: Jonas - Howard - Clurey

R: Lycett - Houston - Gray
INT: Wines - Butters - Hartlett - Amon

Emg: Powell-Pepper - Motlop - Garner - Rockliff - Westhoff - Drew - Hayes

My point is that we are close.

We need a few of the draftees or three of those Emergencies to really stand up.
And we need the confidence and the right attitude from all who surround them.

The bolded players can't exist in the same team. Wingard was traded for Burton and the pick that we used to get Duursma.

What would the opposite of "playing the youth" look like? Well, our Oldest-XXII currently is:

Buzza-Dixon-Ebert
Hoff-Robbie-Motlop

Amon-Wines-Mayes
Lycett-Rockliff-Boak

DBJ-Watts-Burton
Jonas-Clurey-Hartlett

I/C: Sutcliffe, McKenzie, Lienert, Bonner

How many of those players would be in our current First-XXII?!

---

The oldest player is Westhoff (08/1986); the youngest, Bonner (03/1997).

Average age: 27 years old.
Median age: 27 years old.

Players in the average/median age: McKenzie, Sutcliffe, Lycett.

10 players are older than the average; 9 are under.

---

P.S.: We have 45 players on our list. The player who doesn't belong neither in our Oldest-XXII or in our Youngest-XII is Houston (05/1997).

Unfortunately you missed the point, i.e. that it feels like we are just 3 quality players plus the right mindset away from seriously competing.

Now, for the "playing the youth." Our Youngest-XXII would be like this (without the cat-B rookie):

Hayes-Mitch-Williams
Farrell-Atley-Mead

Duursma-Bergman-Butters
Ladhams-SPP-Drew

Garner-Todd-Rozee
Pasini-Houston-Grundy

I/C: Cox, Patmore, Woodcock, Burgoyne

How many of those players would be in our current First-XXII?!

---

The oldest player is Houston (05/1997); the youngest, Bergman (10/2001).

Average age: 19.5 years old.
Median age: 19.5 years old.

Players in the average/median age: Rozee, Woodcock, Duursma, Grundy, Butters.

11 players are older than the average; 6 are under.

---

Comparing both teams, our younger squad is more unbalanced and 2cm shorter in average. Still, I would love to see an intra-squad match between both teams!

I like this team best of all for Rd 1. Impossible to predict who will be in the side past that it will be based on performances in the AFL and reserves.

The only change I see is Westhoff in for Bergman on the bench. He slots in where needed. Bergman gets a couple of games in the Magpies to see how he shapes up. Westhoff is on the verge unless he can find some of his 2018 form.

I can't see the tandem system being used regularly unless one of them can prove themselves as a capable resting key back and that would be brilliant because it is what we need. I'd really like to see one of them become a Brogan like ruckman who can rest in defence in the days when we used to be able to play Brogan and Lade. Otherwise, I think we are going to lose one of Lycett or Ladhams at the end of the year sadly. Ladhams will prove he could be first ruck in several other AFL teams so we will have a choice to make.

Motlop and Bonner do not come in until they force their way in via the Magpies.

Competition is hot for Rocklif's spot too. I think SPP will be in the side before too long if he looks up to scratch.

Sutcliffe not to get a game unless hell freezes over.
