The File of Forgotten Classics

Few Essendon ones stick out for me from the 2007/8 period.

Rd 10 2007 - Essendon 74 d Sydney 73

McVeigh (or mcphee?) Kicks the sealer despite being WAY out of bounds. Swans have a Chance to steal it but a kick for goal scrapes the unusually fat post.

Rd 11 2007 - Essendon 95 d West Coast 94

My personal favourite Essendon game, its not every day you beat the premier and runner up by 1 point in consecutive weeks. We were six goals down before coming home hard, Scott lucas was immense and kicked a massive goal in the last. As the game hung in the balance Rosa(?) from the eagles dived on the ball in a contest should have been done for holding it. He wasn’t and Kerr gets a soft free from the ball up, he pumps it long to the square where Fletcher has the wit to punch the ball out of bounds and protecting the 1 point lead. The ball is thrown back into play and the siren sounds. Jubilation from the 48000 strong pro bomber crowd. Amazing.

Rd 13 2007 - Essendon 125 d Melbourne 123

Neale Daniher’s last game as coach and Scott Lucas spoils the party with a goal in the final six seconds.

Rd 14 2008 - Essendon 95 d Fremantle 91

This was a Sunday twilight game in Perth which was close all game. Freo came home strong but the bombers held on to win a very tough game.
here is the final 5 mins with countdown clock. Quarters commentary is unbelievable, wish he was still commentating

Voss kicks a point on the siren for a draw

Egan misses set shot from 55 out to win the game

Shannon Grant misses set shot from the goal square with a minute left

Motlop throws away the game with a free kick on the siren

Riewoldt and Moore miss shots to win the game

Two more for everyone
St Kilda v Port, Motlop takes a hanger then misses a shot after the siren (full match)

Hawthorn v Port 2007, Ebert takes a mark and kicks a goal

Round 21, 1996: Brisbane Bears vs Fremantle at the Gabba.

Bears needing to win to reclaim top spot on the ladder in the penultimate round of the season, Freo with literally only pride to play for. Freo lead for most of the night in a tight affair right until the final 30 seconds when a young Shaun Hart flails his boot wildly at a bouncing ball about 30 out from goal and it miraculously goes in, handing the Bears a 1 point win and top spot (which they surrendered next week by failing to show up to Victoria Park. An interesting sliding doors moment that one).

As far as "forgotten" classics go that one was a ripper. Pity I can't find anything on Youtube about it.

Here is one from the next year when the newly formed Brisbane Lions lost to the dockers after a shot from Quenton Leach to win the game for Fremantle

You occasionally see this game pop up on Fox Footy and this was a see-sawing contest all day (and ended with what even a staunch optimist would call "cynical contact to Shane Claytons back). But the previous contest, much like The Bears second theme song (another case of a forgotten classic) seems to have been lost to history.

2003 Round 16, Fremantle v Adelaide, a true modern classic, even though both teams were not super teams of the year, they played a ripper of a game in Perth, and was instrumental in Fremantle making their first ever finals series. Bit static the footage but it shows Fremantle coming back in the last 5 minutes followed by a 1 point win

Round 14 2010
RICHMOND 14.5 (89) SYDNEY 12.13 (85)

Back when Tiger Supporters took what we could in terms of being able to celebrate. Was a great game with unlikely hero Andy Collins coming back on the ground after a JC like resurrection after earlier getting KO’d and winning the game off his own boot as Richmond came from behind to win.

Modern commentary's fab 4.

Plus, the special comments from Wallsy and Blighty and boundary riding from Christi Malthouse.

Also the font used was eye catching and the who's hot and not was quality.

I miss them on Saturday nights, they had the half time report looking at the game on fox, showing highlights from the first half.
