Very good viewing in the end. Just some random thoughts...
Interesting listening to Dermie's comments as opposed to other players' - he came across as very smug for most of the doco, though I wonder if that is just reflective of the confidence he played with. Certainly to listen to him, Hawthorn knew all along they would win. Whereas like others above, I remember West Coast that year being pretty much a steamroller, and was shocked when we beat them in the first final. When Langers gave those two 50m I had an awful sinking feeling.
Amazing to see all those players again, gosh that was a fantastic lineup. Although the game has moved on enormously in speed and tactics, when you watch Ben Allan putting it on Dunstall's chest, you'd reckon quite a few of those players would have done just fine if they were running around now.
Sad stuff on Chris Mainwaring. I disliked that they dodged the issue - that was poor journalism that would leave the uninformed watcher just scratching their head - but watching Guy McKenna getting teared-up about it, I did a little bit also. I loved watching Chris play - he and Craig Turley were awesome players at the time who I'd have loved to have had in our team. Liked them almost as much as I detested Brett Heady.
Per others here, I thought the Mick Malthouse stuff just came off as hypocritical. Wasn't he in the media just recently saying it's not the coach's role to be helping stamp out vilification? And yet it's tragic they didn't do more about Chris Lewis' situation? Clearly learned a lot in 20 years, Mick - zero points. What I did think was sad though was his comment that footy wore Chris down over time - it appeared the implication was that the racism and abuse were at the heart of that.
The other thing I really noticed - where the hell did 20 years go, and all those great players, and all the ones that came since. Wow. Life just flies past you.
Dunstall's closing comment was a good one, but I thought Dermie's was more interesting - there's a guy who's genuinely done well for himself post-footy, but what's the one thing he wishes for? Just to be able to play again.
Good stuff. I barely watch TV these days, but that was worth the time.
