Both shockers. This game was a real horror show after half time
So much pain we had to endure .1981 still sits even worse for me than 1970 ..

At one stage early in the second quarter it was 18 scoring shots to 4.I made the mistake a few years ago of watching this GF a few years ago during the GF marathon….and could not believe the 1st qtr. The Pies totally dominated that qtr but only kicked 4.8 missing some absolute sitters, Carlton hardly had the ball in their forward half at all and managed just 0.3. If they Pies had even kicked 8.4 in that qtr we would have been up by 50 points at qtr time and I dont reckon we would have lost it from there. Carlton looked like a rabble at the 1st break.
I love the way you treat indigenous players like children. Syd wanted to play in the grand final- that's why he lied. I happen to believe adults have autonomy regardless of their skin colour. Nothing would have happened. He would have missed the grand final. The exoneration of Syd shows they took racial abuse seriously in 1970. He clearly punched Adamson, yet he escaped any penalty. What would have happened to Syd if he said no to the powerful white men?

Another eye roller from you. I really laughed at “they took racial abuse seriously in 1970”, years prior to official denouncement of the White Australia PolicyI love the way you treat indigenous players like children. Why was he cleared to play after citing racial abuse? That doesn't mean racial abuse wasn't going on in games.Another eye roller from you. I really laughed at “they took racial abuse seriously in 1970”, years prior to official denouncement of the White Australia Policy
I love the way the man who was smeared as a racist by a lie is not even a consideration in your commentary on this event. Did his privilege mean being smeared as a racist didn't affect his reputation? He was a teacher too, so imagine what kids at his school must have thought.Spoken like a privileged white person.
My post was more in relation to your statement below:I love the way the man who was smeared as a racist by a lie is not even a consideration in your commentary on this event. Oh-and please tell me what you think would have happened had Syd refused to lie?
He was the real victim keeping a dignified silence when he was wronged. IIRC I read that Syd had pressure put on him to be a party to this concocted lie because the heavies in the Carlton scene were desperate for him to play. Those officials who thought it was the right thing to do were the villains in this process. He was a great Collingwood person lee Adamson
I met him a number of times .. great guy and served the club well as assistant coach for many years also
1981 was also a case of the injury curse. Peter Daicos hurt his ankle but Peter Moore was rendered as a statue for the game. Hafey wanted him to play but he said all he could do was stand still in the forward pocket and he was our best player in those times. The other thing about that year was we should have finished top but for having to go up to Sydney to play against the Swans who were hellbent on winning because they were moving up there the following year. Mike Fitzpatrick said that their rest in the week before the Grand Final was the major factor in their comeback during the last qr. Even then we were making sacrifices for the good of the league. Pity Hafey did not have us take that match against South Melbourne seriously. The other memory I had of this game as a kid was the mosquito fleet of the Blues taking the game away from us especially Ashman. This game was a real horror show after half time

Syd and the officials were the villains. Adamson was the only victim. Syd was a grown adult man. If Degoey lied under oath and said a player had said something unspeakable about his mum as a reason for striking his opponent and then blamed Leppa for making him lie at the tribunal he would be roundly mocked. Treating Syd like a helpless child is far more racist than anything I have heard regarding this story. He was the real victim keeping a dignified silence when he was wronged. When indigenous players are mistreated and abused those responsible should be vilified and punished. When an indigenous player lies under oath about a white player, he should feel the shame anyone who'd smear an opponent's reputation to play in a football game deserves.
I'd rather re-watch Schindler's List.
