People who promote flat earth theory do it for a few reasons: One, they like to feel superior to the sheeple. Secondly, if it ever gets proven that they were right all along, well, boy, get ready for some really cocky people walking around! And Thirdly, they feel they need a reason to promote distrust in official stances, and this situation is a perfect example for them as to why "the man" is trying to keep them down.

Yeah, there's actually been a lot of research/discussion into why people become drawn to outlandish conspiracy theories and it's usually associated with distrust of others and institutions (not always a bad thing) and a feeling of exclusivity, like you are part of a small group that is awake to this grand conspiracy that all the other dim wits don't see. The QAnon conspiracy fits perfectly into this.

What is the benefit or motive behind fooling the entire population that the earth is round?
What does it achieve?
