i believe what people are thinking of is that the earth was considered to be at the center of the universe until copernicus in the 1700s or somethingThe flat earth was never the accepted belief. Most scientists among the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians etc - if I may use that term 'scientist' - most well-educated people knew the earth was a sphere - if they cared. Which, for the majority of folks, was the point - they didn't care. Their 'world' was too small to have any consequences relevant to whether the earth was round or flat. The concept of the Earth being finite at all would have been a massive leap for them.
The earth was recognised as a round object long before Jesuits or Christianity was even thought about.
