The sun does not light up the Earth's sky - it lights up the particles in the earth's atmosphere. You can only see light waves that directly hit the receptors in your eye, hence you can only see objects that reflect light directly into your eyes. There is no physical object that is 'the sky'.

The sun doesn't light up space because there are no particles in space to deflect the light back to our eyes. Actually - not true - there are a couple of particles that we can see - eg the moon, Jupiter, Venus, satellites etc. They are all lit up by the sun.
